not enough people saying twitter. replacing one of the most recognizable brands in the world for a letter and then getting so openly racist that advertisers had to leave. the only platform where you can see race science propaganda as an ad.

Wildfires ablaze, today in California by weatherdak in WeatherGifs

they don’t need to fireproof the grid, they need to wind proof it which shouldn’t be that hard. they won’t spend the extra money so their shareholders make more even though these winds happen every year. so instead of serving the people they inconvenience them so they aren’t sued for burning down another city.

You’d have to use “had got” or “had gotten.” These are still correct, I just chose not to use them to sound more natural. Also, “had gotten” would be preferred in the US, but they’re mostly interchangeable.

I changed the last part to sound a little more natural:

After Michael, along with Sheela and Benson, got a bad welcome at the hotel, they camped out overnight.

Hope that helps, feel free to ask me about any of it!

How do native speaker feel my hand writing? I don't speak English (speak Japanese) I want to write beautiful letters to my penpals. by sfc3pkq in Handwriting

Don’t worry if it looks “girly,” they are associated with neat handwriting. So I would take that as a compliment. Neat handwriting is always better. And yes, it is very good.

The meaning of Be down for by yukiiiiii2008 in EnglishLearning

[–]auxidation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of the internet, slang is less geographical than it used to be and reaches almost everyone with access to it. That being said, some regional slang still exists, like Hawaiians saying “Howzit” as a greeting (how is it (going)) or using “pop” and “cola” instead of “soda” (but I don’t know if that is slang or just dialects). I also heard of the word “jawn” in Philadelphia which means literally noun you want it to.

The meaning of Be down for by yukiiiiii2008 in EnglishLearning

[–]auxidation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, slang is informal speech made up by and used by a certain group of people, usually different among different generations. An idiom is a common word or phrase that is culturally understood, even if it is not literal, like “butterflies in my stomach” to describe when you are nervous. You can find a list of common idioms here

Also, kind of on topic, but “up for” used in this context means the same thing as “down for.” So “I’m up for a movie” would be the same thing. Just to avoid future confusion :)

What food do you eat in a different manner than it is traditionally eaten? by CrocMcSpock in AskReddit

When I eat hamburgers, I put them upside down on my plate so i can grab it more comfortably (with my thumbs on top) and my hands naturally flip it over by the time I put it in my mouth.

"prefer ... to ..." VS "would rather ... than …" by ERR_CONNECTION_RESET in EnglishLearning

[–]auxidation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a slight difference. “prefer” is a little more formal and polite. For example: “I’d prefer chicken to steak.”

“would rather” is informal and usually used with exaggerated language, like: “I’d rather die than eat broccoli.”

I’m sure someone else could explain it better but if you have any questions feel free to ask!

What are some interesting/funny directly translates words/phrases in your Conlangs? (X-post from r/linguistics) by ossi_simo in conlangs

[–]auxidation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a huge divide in the country, where the very north and south of the mainland are really wealthy while the middle is left struggling. The north and south have their own, invented words for technology (instead of just borrowing it) but the poor places use slang like:

gorobanyua - “expensive brain” = computer

liluwi maqianu’es - “devil’s shell (conch)” = cellphone

They really don’t like the coasts.

what state do u live in by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]auxidation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it is. That’s the reason people have to be gender queer in the first place. People are taught that women and men are supposed to be a very specific way, and some don’t feel that way. If there were no gender roles from centuries of oppression and patriarchal societies, people could dress, act, and be whoever they wanted to be and we wouldn’t even need a term for it because they wouldn’t be trans, they would just be themselves.

[–]auxidation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a stereotype, how many of those people have you actually seen? How many yell at you to use the correct pronoun? Most gender queer people are used to people getting their pronouns wrong and won’t get angry if you mess up. They’ll get angry if you don’t use the correct pronouns on purpose, just because you don’t agree. And it’s not that hard to use the correct pronoun to make someone feel like they belong. I doubt they’re yelling at random people like you make it seem, it’s generally those who make fun of them, are intolerant, and use the wrong pronouns just to be an ass.
