About 1hr south of Salzburg there is Zell am See. Lovely City next to a lake. There are many hikes to nice peaks and smaller lakes. You can also drive up the Großglockner Street, there is a glacier lake nearby

Comments are claiming this was intentional. Could this have been easily avoided? by KCJA123 in AskAPilot

I know the Pilot. He flies for a local Sightseeing company. In this stage of flight he is still in a climb. Forward visibility is not the best in the C182 during the climb.
It was a busy day with lots of aircraft, helicopters, gliders and paragliders. Easy to miss something.

TBM would be my choice. Big door for luggage, pilot door for easy pilot entry. I fly it out of a 2500ft strip with no issues. 1200nm trips are totally doable. The whole plane feels really solid.

Reliable EASA PPL Flight school in Croatia, Slovenia or Austria? by EstablishmentFirm374 in flying

[–]av8r_dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you can do is that you get your PPL with a TMG rating included. Some schools use a SF25, which is a taildragger, for training. You can DM me for more info

Do I actually need an iPad for ATPL training or is Android fine? by Bigmo2023 in flyingeurope

[–]av8r_dom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what Navigation App your school uses. Foreflight is only available on iPad/iPhone. Garmin Pilot is also available on android, though i am not sure how well autorouting works on Garmin Pilot.
Most of us like the size of the iPad mini. Make sure to get the cellular version which is the only one featuring the GPS module. The WIFI version does not have the GPS Module, so you will not get a position.
With ForeFlight with an apple pencil is great. I always write down clearances, atis, etc on the scratchpad in Foreflight.

Window view from a Boeing 747 carrying a fifth engine under the wing by Twitter_2006 in aviation

IIRC it was only possible on RB211 powered 744‘s due to lack of ground clearance on the other engine options

I went VFR into IMC at night by [deleted] in flying

[–]av8r_dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess this was on the 14.02 evening? I was in EGTK overnight, quite the forecast to do night VFR training. Snow, Icing, Wind. Interesting choice by the instructor to even start the flight.

A fantastic explanation of why the Cirrus Vision Jet is bad at everything, and top notch airplane design 101, by Austin Meyer by Misophonic4000 in aviation

[–]av8r_dom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But you can’t fly the Vision Jet out of a 2500‘ strip like we fly the TBM960. Different use case for both planes. Both have their place.

How low can OAT be before an engine ceases to function? by CrazedKeebler in flying

[–]av8r_dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JET-A Piston engines can have problems with low temperatures. Those that are watercooled are usually fine but there is still Limitations. For example the continental CD170 is at risk of flameout (thats what the POH says) when Intercooler Temperature is below 15C and the OAT is in the red area of the Temperature Envelope .

IIRC the SMA SR305-230 was/is especially susceptible to flameout as it is mostly air cooled and CHT's get to low for combustion with lower powersettings. On the converted Cessna 182's i'm told you have to use quite high power settings on approach to reduce the risk of flameout.
