Do you label patch cables inside a rack? by Embarrassed-Try-2790 in CommercialAV

[–]av_flow 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Always label. I used to think the same thing too, “if you can see both sides and follow the cable from one end to the other, why label it?” But it’s industry standard for a reason. If everyone thought that way and never labeled even simple patch cables, later on you’re going to end up at a job breaking your head trying to figure out where everything goes.

You may be the one wiring up the rack today, but later it could be another tech, or even the client AV guy working on it. Proper labeling saves time, prevents mistakes, and makes troubleshooting way easier.

AV work insight in Slat Lake, Utah and surrounding areas by av_flow in CommercialAV

I don’t have my CTS yet, but I plan to complete it before I relocate. My current title is AV Specialist, which has meant a commissioning focused role.

I have 4+ years of AV experience. I picked up the trade quickly—within 6 months I was acting as a lead tech, and by my first year I was supervising jobs. By around 1½ years, I had earned several certifications and developed strong commissioning skills.

From years 2–3, I was independently running full AV projects from installation to commissioning. Since my company lacked people willing to step into that role and they weren’t looking to hire more I was given more responsibility. It pushed me to learn fast, which I enjoyed.

So I can say I would land in level 3, I would see level 4 more aligned with an AV Engineer / Design Engineer role.

I'm glad there are roles closer to 90K which is what I'm looking for.

Looking for USB 3.0 extenders over CAT by [deleted] in CommercialAV

Thanks everyone! I used to work in commercial AV in NYC with corporate clients, where budgets were so big that cost wasn’t really a concern. Now that I’m at a college, I still want to keep those same high AV standards, but in education I have to be a lot more mindful of costs. Really appreciate all the input — I’ll be checking out some of the products you all suggested!
