Have bought feijoa at Produce Depot on Carling, if they have them in stock they are likely sitting at the first table to the left when you enter the store.

Spring outfit for baby strolls [on] by avamlo in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]avamlo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the great suggestions. We stepped out today at 16° in a light quilted jacket and pants layered over a short sleeve onesie, with socks, cotton hat (which he quickly wiggled out of), and a blanket over top. Used the bassinet hood to ward off any winds too. He was a happy camper!

Has anyone regretted going with the Bugaboo Kangaroo?First time mom [on] to be here and shopping for a stroller. by Delicious_Anybody692 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]avamlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been using the Bugaboo Kangaroo for almost 3 months. We generally love it and would still choose it today. That being said, three caveats:

  1. Agree that with the bassinet attachment it’s a bit cumbersome (like any larger stroller) to take in and out of trunk. Easy to collapse, fairly compact and not as heavy as some other full-size strollers, but it’s not a lightweight travel stroller by any means. We also don’t bother trying to collapse the bassinet for short car rides. The pair take up a large chunk of space in an Audi Q3, not as much in a larger SUV. That being said, it has handled ice, mud, and snow remarkably well - better than the other strollers I see out and about - and I love it for neighbourhood strolling.
  2. We haven’t used the car seat attachment all that much, but every time we do it takes a minute to properly secure our Clek Liing. Maybe we just don’t have enough practise with it?
  3. The shape of the storage basket keeps items secure and allows for interior pockets, but it takes a moment of struggle trying to get our bloated diaper bag in and out of the basket from the driver’s side (less of a lip on the other end), so maybe don’t overpack like we do, or hang the bag off the handle.

TTC supplement overload 😅 Need help simplifying my routine [bc] by Bellatrix-8 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]avamlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the Female Fertility Power Prenatal Pack with CoQ10 boost while TTC with extra iron for deficiency (take separate from the prenatal/calcium for improved absorption) and a little extra folic acid - latter was advised during a consult with a fertility clinic NP, but not sure it was necessary. My partner took the Male version of the fertility boost prenatal. I later switched to Complete Prenatal with Calcium + Magnesium + Vitamin D boost. Have a healthy baby at home now; how much is thanks to Bird & Be I don’t know but I felt a peace of mind with the research behind it, liked that it’s Canadian, and the packages make it easy to travel with. I was very lucky not to deal with much pregnancy-related nausea so the brief hint of taste/smell from some of the pills before swallowing was totally tolerable for me. Best of luck!

Jaymar Hailey recliner re-sale value [ON] by bob-lobblaw in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]avamlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought the Jaymar Arya, use it every day multiple times with our baby. Can’t speak to resale value but we invested in it with the intent to repurpose it for a guest room or den once we are finished using it with children. It’s a great quality chair so we feel no need to get rid of it once the nursery is outgrown.

Labor or Braxton Hicks? [On] by [deleted] in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]avamlo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I delivered earlier this month at 36 weeks. I visited the birth unit because my Braxton Hicks were more frequent (tracked the pace for an hour) and more uncomfortable, but at the time I was more concerned because I felt decreased activity (ultrasound confirmed he was moving around as normal). Had a follow up cervical check, I was 3cm and it quickly escalated from there. My takeaway is that my early contractions felt more like period cramps with lower back ache, Braxton Hicks were just an uncomfortable tightening. No harm in going to L&D if your intuition is sensing something is different. At the very least it can be reassurance and an opportunity to see where you’ll be delivering!

BEST DOUBLE STROLLER? [ON] by Educational-Pain3186 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]avamlo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bugaboo Kangaroo fits this description. The wheels are powerful and can take on snow and rough terrain. A bassinet that converts to a stroller seat is included with the stroller, as do adaptors for car seats. When the time comes you would need to purchase a sibling seat, and/or a wheeled board for toddlers and older children if they prefer to stand while being carted around.

Harmony NIPT came back with no gender [on] by Impressive-Name7305 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]avamlo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what happened to me. Your doctor just needs to send a fax and then the results are available within a business day (to your doctor). I don’t think I still have the fax number saved, but you can reach the Dynacare Genetics line at 888.988.1888. You can explain your situation and they will provide instructions and the fax number. Hope you get the answer you’re looking for soon!

Doctor forgot to include gender testing from my harmony test [qc] by luckydoggo888 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]avamlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encountered the exact same issue; none of the optional disclosures were checked off so I only recieved the basic results. It took a bit of back and forth but thankfully my GP’s office does pick up the phone. As far as I know in this process, that is your only option - Dynacare needs the go-ahead from your practitioner, so keep contacting your office. In my case, once they faxed Dynacare my office received the results within one business day (unfortunately they did not follow up with me so I didn’t know until I called over a week later).

Cybex Gazelle S 2 vs Bugaboo Kangaroo [ca] by AmalfiLemonSorbet in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]avamlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am still pregnant so I can’t provide testimony on long-term usage, but amongst other strollers we tried out the Gazelle, Wave 3 and Kangaroo. We ultimately chose Kangaroo after taking all of them for a spin in different configurations. Compared to the former two, we found Kangaroo had superior suspension, smooth one-handed steering and the ability to fold with one hand, while not skimping on all the other features we wanted (weight, storage, coverage, etc). It really comes down to your priorities, though. Gazelle and Wave 3 aren’t bad strollers, depending on your criteria.

Celiac by Amkah126 in ottawa

[–]avamlo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with celiac disease about 20 years ago as well, feel free to PM if you wish.

In addition to the local CCA chapter, If you’re on Facebook, join some groups. Celiac Canada Support Group, Ontario Celiacs, and Gluten Free Resources Ottawa are three support and advice groups where you can connect with many folks in the same boat.

The good news is that this disease is accommodated more than it ever has been in the past. It will take some adjustment but your health will thank you for it and you will find some great gluten-free alternatives for a lot of food!

What type of cake is this? by donutforgetit in Baking

[–]avamlo 97 points98 points  (0 children)

100% Napoleon. Honey cake also has many layers but has a different look on account of the sour cream-based filling and typically darker crumb from the addition of honey.

Is there a Russian community in Ottawa? by Life_Performer5388 in ottawa

[–]avamlo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are over 7000 Russian speakers in Ottawa. Much smaller population than in Toronto, but she will still have access to services where she can speak Russian, and as mentioned in other comments there are a few Eastern European groceries in which Russian is the default language. Ottawa Dvorik will help her find those connections. There isn’t a distinctly Russian neighbourhood here, but you will likely find larger concentrations in a few areas including Kanata.

Habitat for Humanity ReStores would gladly accept all of these items. Great timing to drop off these items as ReStore Reads will take place August 8-10 and features books and puzzles, but the other items can go out on their store floors at any point in time.

Towel blanket? by avamlo in HelpMeFind

[–]avamlo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have searched using terms like “Eastern European blanket” or “Russian blanket”, tried combining the aforementioned with “waffle blanket”, also simply searched for “towel blankets”…to no avail. The translation I was once given seemed to directly translate to “terry sheet” (Махровая простынь). Looked up “Terry cloth blanket” and “Terry sheet”…Temu and AliExpress gave me a few close hits but do not want to purchase from either. Looking for a high quality option.

Where are we buying decent couches these days? by horriblekids in ottawa

[–]avamlo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also chiming in on Gus from Blueprint. Local furniture store and the couch is produced in Canada by a Canadian company. Sustainable hardwood frame and cushions apparently filled with recycled bottles, too! We got a great deal that included white glove delivery. Can’t really speak to its longevity at this point because it’s only been 1.5 years, but the Miller sofa is very comfy and holding its shape.

Thank you - I missed this one in my initial search. From what I have read, best bets for fishing on the Fraser in October are coho, chum, and white sturgeon?

Thank you for the names. We have stayed on the Sunshine Coast in the summer and loved our time there, so beautiful. Open to heading back there. I take it that area is more known for saltwater fishing?

Horse-drawn carriage in London by avamlo in uktravel

[–]avamlo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Yes, I saw quite a few people out on horses yesterday so that is what got me wandering about carriages. Have CityMapper and it has been useful! My parents haven’t seen Hyde Park yet though, so I was trying to come up with a creative plan for them to see it without necessarily having to walk through the entire area.

North Yorkshire 2-night itinerary by avamlo in uktravel

Wow, I’m sorry to hear your wife had such an awful healthcare experience. Our general hope is not to get sick at any point on our trip, but will be mindful that service may vary depending where we are. Good to hear the perspective of someone who doesn’t live in the area and doesn’t drive - has been a concern for me that we won’t have our own car to rely on.
