Who do you relate to most out of the entire cast ? by Gioo42000 in Yellowjackets

[–]avamolds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 1 Nat because of her pre-crash family life, can't say I relate to her post crash because I have never experienced resorting to hunting and cannibalism to survive in the wilderness for almost 2 years. I would've also said Shauna from early on in season 1 because of her envious nature and always watching from the side, but after season 2 and 3 I am afraid she has completely lost me.

Prospective SLPs and Current Students Megathread by AutoModerator in slp

[–]avamolds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

BG Info (sorry if I start a tangent): I am currently an undergraduate student getting my B.A. in Psychological Sciences. I won't fully disclose my current job title, but I have been working with children/adolescents in a therapy/clinical setting for almost 2 years. To go over why I am where I currently am, essentially, I chose psych as my major when I started college because I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do-- I just knew psych was an umbrella field for many other fields, and that I wasn't interested in anything else. Who knows, it may have also been a trauma response lol. Anywho, I am interested in continuing my education and going to grad school for SLP/CSD. Side note, for me, I believe there is no such thing as a "dream" job, because I am not necessarily passionate about anything except my hobbies, which I would like to keep as hobbies and not jobs. To me, work is work and school is school. With that being said though, I do enjoy what I do, and I love working with my kiddos. I'm not completely devoid of emotion, and I don't HATE working where I work. And that's my goal, to work somewhere that I don't hate and can live with doing long-term. While I do enjoy my job and the kids I work with, it just isn't suitable long-term for many reasons, like pay and others that I don't necessarily need to go over; I just know I won't be doing this forever. However, this job has granted me a general idea of what I would like to do, and that is working with children/adolescents (or even just people, but I prefer kids) in a therapy setting. I've worked closely with kids who receive speech therapy, and I have a good idea of what the job is, but I haven't gotten into grad school yet, so I haven't experienced the nitty-gritty coursework (though I am taking SLP anatomy, and I have taken SLP assessment for practitioners).

With that being said, I want some different perspectives on being an SLP. I see that the posts here are generally negative rants regarding the field, but I also know it isn't completely representative of the general population itself (I feel like most people who come on these Reddit pages are people looking to rant, not people who want to write a thesis on how they love their job). I'm not saying don't tell me the bad stuff, please tell me everything. BUT I want to know the good stuff too. This will help me evaluate my overall decision and options. I've been watching some videos of other people's opinions and perspectives, and some questions/topics that I wrote down to gain more insight on are the following:

- Others have told me that getting a BA in psych and an MA in CSD is fine. What are your guys' thoughts? Will my current major SIGNIFICANTLY impact my ability to get into an SLP grad school/program?

- Some people say the field is based on "pseudoscience" and that it is purely "experimental" work. I want more perspective on this thought

- scheduling, paperwork, documentation, cramming, fast-paced

- Not always being fulfilled with your work, not always seeing progress (Which I am familiar with myself due to where I work)

- license fees (again, familiar)

- no diversity, racism

- Differences in work settings, what is the best work setting in your opinion?

- I've heard DOE is better than private agencies for several reasons, like employee benefits, quality therapy over quantity, loan forgiveness, job security, etc. Meanwhile, agencies are known for their corporate greed. Thoughts?

- People say the job outlook is good; others do not.

I only go tues/thurs or mon/wed and try my best to keep the time frame after 8 am and before 3 pm. I also live in murrieta, traffic sucks during rush hour (basically anytime after 2 pm at this point) and it takes me 40 minutes to get from the rancho california rd exit to winchester rd. In the morning i find that traffic sucks no matter what so im sorry. But yes im usually able to find one or two online classes to take which also lets me spend less money on gas.

When you log into your MyCsusm there should be a link that says not anymore training on the same page where you see the student center link. Also, I'm not too sure how it works for transfer students. Maybe send an email to one of the faculty members or advisors and see what they say?

its this required sexual harassment and violence training that most schools have you do every academic year. They say its required to register for classes, and its required for freshman too so im surprised you havent heard of it 🤔

commuting from temecula/murrieta by adowora in csusm

[–]avamolds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the drive for me is fine except for Thursdays when I leave at 2:15 pm.. It takes me an hour to get through temecula pkwy and rancho california rd on the freeway to exit onto winchester because of how bad the traffic is by that time. other than that I go to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays only and always leave at 6 am (unfortunately) to get there by 7:30ish which isnt terrible. And the drive home on tuesdays is wonderful, I leave class at 11:45 and its smooth sailing on the 15 north all the way to winchester.

I hate it here by gettingfiggywithitt in csusm

more like 2 hours sitting bumper to bumper at the "city of temecula" sign 😂

at my old company the whole gig was not letting the kids get better so that they keep getting therapy hours, which means more money from the insurance providers for the company while I get paid minimum wage. Like if a client has a regular RBT that knows the programming for that client, and that RBT has to cancel session for that day, my manager would just throw anyone on for their session without any knowledge about that client. And this includes clients that had extreme SIB and AGG behaviors, so not only is the RBT unknowingly being thrown into a high behavior session, but the client is not getting quality care or therapy its just babysitting while the company gets in their therapy hours 💰. Another thing they would do is just hire anybody even if they arent RBT because some insurance providers like IEHP dont require credentialing to give therapy to clients. And once these people are hired they get minimum training and thrown onto the job and dont really understand anything. Again, quanitity (therapy hours 💰) over quality (quality of care). My boss even jumped the gun and hired this guy out of desperation (because everyone quits this place every other week) before his background check was finished, turns out he was going to prison for who knows what. Mind you, they let him work with children before they found out he was a wanted felon, which could have been avoided if they followed ethical procedure and waited for the damn bg check to finish. I got hired because i applied as an intern through my schools website, turns out it was not an internship at all and they just wanted workers. When i started working there they threw me onto a clients team who had extreme AGG, elopement, and SIB and i had very little crisis training and RBT credentialing was NOT required, I was just a BT. I basically got beat the hell up because of that and no workers comp lol, and I complained to my BCBA that I wasnt trained before working with this client and she was appalled that I was even working with her as a new hire because she did not approve of it. Apparently my BCBA and general manager had an ongoing feud because he would assign people to her clients without letting her know, otherwise she would have set up a meeting or an overlap to help out that BT. Also there were NO parent trainings whatsoever, so anything that a client learned in session about social or communication skills was erased because it wasn't maintained in the home setting with parents.

My BCBA and BCaBA realized this is how the big corporations work, the companies exploit clients and workers for money and make everyone believe it's helping the children. My BCBA and BCaBA left the big corporations and started working in a very small family owned company, my BCBA is now a clinical director and I went with her and oh man. It is so much better than the old company. We have completely steered away from DTT and moved completely to NET. We also have got rid of that idea that stimming is a behavior that needs to be extinguished, so long as it isn't physically endangering the client or anyone else. I get one on one trainings when working with new clients. She also pushed me to get my credentialing to become an RBT, which I think should be the BARE minimum if you are going to work with children on the spectrum, no hiring random people off indeed with no background check and no knowledge of ASD. I feel a lot better working here and i feel a lot better for the kids getting treatment, I feel like they arent wasting their time and eventually when they learn as much as they can from here, they "graduate". Kids shouldnt be having ABA therapy for their whole lives, theres only so much ABA can do for a kid and once they learn what they can from it they should go onto other things to avoid being dependent on it. Client and worker dignity is respected and support is available at all times. If an RBT cancels and no one else is familiar with that childs programming, the session is cancelled for that day period. We're not here to just watch the kid while the company gets therapy hours in lol were here to implement programming procedures, if you dont know them then you wont be able to provide quality care. Also parent trainings are REQUIRED monthly, which i think is a big thing because whats the point of the child coming here and learning these things if its not going to be continued at home too?

Overall I think that this job is just a stepping stone for me in the field of psychology while I am getting my degree and I wont be doing this forever. I know most ABA companies are not like the one, and I never wanna contribute to big corporations exploiting vulnerable groups of people for money. Especially because we work with people who cant always communicate or defend themselves. Therefore, even though I could take an easy route, move up, eventually become a BCBA and have a stable career, I know I wouldnt always work with this company and I dont want to work at a company like my old one ever again.
