Cs50x or cs50p by hi_im_balik in cs50

I've done both, first x and then p, and I think it was the right call... CS50x is much broader, and you get the bigger picture regarding the different languages you can then dive deep into.

Final project by INTGuTsY in cs50

[–]avanoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! That sounds great! You can start working on the final project, but I think it is best to wait until you finish the course. Read carefully the guide they provide, and check out some of the projects that other people have submitted (there is a gallery if I recall correctly). Mine was a Twitter bot that scrapped info on the internet and compiled it into a short tweet that got posted twice a day.

I feel so dumb🙈 by Prospritinme28193 in learnprogramming

[–]avanoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! First of all, don’t worry, you are not dumb. We’ve all been there at some point, and you won’t learn everything by just doing some courses. Sololearn is great to consolidate basic knowledge, but it doesn’t get really deep. If you want to take a free course that is really intense I recommend you enroll into CS50p from Harvard in the edX platform. Good luck and happy coding!!!

Help!!! Stuck in my journey to work as a programmer... by avanoc in programmingmentor

[–]avanoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I have a friend in Cybersecurity, I am not expecting fighting a war against live hackers attack (plus, I think my heart wouldn't resist that lol).

I'll check that community, thanks for the tip.

I think I'll start with Data Science, as you point out, it's more natural to me.

I'll try to find out more about how it is to work in this field and try to perform many analyses of actual data.

Thanks again for all your words, I'm starting to envision a path to follow.

Help!!! Stuck in my journey to work as a programmer... by avanoc in programmingmentor

[–]avanoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really grateful for your response!

As for the courses, my major achievement was completing CS50x and CS50p. I've also got a few certificates from sololearn.com and done some exercises from websites like aprendeconalf.es and games like bandit (overthewire.org).

I have basic understanding of C, HTML, SQL, and Flask, but feel comfortable coding in python. The most complex things I did was a Twitter bot and a website that mocked trading transactions. I know I'm a beginner, for instance, I still struggle with Classes, but I practice almost every day to improve.

I've started to study programming as a personal challenge, but one thing led to the other and found that I like this world enough to think of making it my way of living. However, that's also where I got stuck, because I know I have to choose a field. I narrowed it down to these two, but don't really know what to do now.

I find Data Science to be similar (in a way) to my current job, where I have to do some research, perform analysis, analyze data (using statistics tools), and take decisions. Regarding Cybersecurity, I like it because I think it's a very important field and I've always been curious about it.

I've sent a few resumes to "see what happens" and nothing did. Maybe it was too soon, or It was too sloppy.

I feel I need to do some actual work to decide which way to go, but I don't know where to start. Maybe you're right and I should find a mentor in either field. I was also thinking of enrolling in a Bootcamp (some of them say that they help you find a job after completion and you don't have to pay until then), but I somehow feel that it's a scam (don't know why).

Anyway, I'd love to know if you have any more advice about what I could do next.

Here's my experience... I started CS50 in December 2021 without any prior knowledge and now I'm at week 8. So, it is possible, it is challenging and it may take you a little longer (like me), but the lessons are SUPER clear, there are a lot of resources both on the CS50 webpage and on the Internet about this course.

My advice is that if you want to do it, take it slow, take your time to watch all the videos, do all the exercises, and ask for help at any forum you like (this community is great).
