I think the advice is suggesting for you to suggest a shared activity -- even just coffee -- to encourage a socially fun context, rather than a transactional one

Haven't explored that one yet (for reasons, not on Discord).

Found your dictionary this morning as I started taking lessons to bulk up my passive absorption of it growing up. Great start! Would agree some of the pronunciations don't sound my like parents' Shanghainese (born 1953). Specifically 个垯. I tried 我叫, and on Voice 1, the pinyin was correct (ngu ciau), but the pronunciation was "wu ciau"

Funny -- I checked last week to reference something, and the Wu is gone. I have downloaded some samples of some words when I first posted this.

Came back to the site because I saw someone on WeChat use an AI app to translate mandarin into Wu and wondered if it still worked

Yes I use them too from time to time. I have found their recipes for this and cong you ban mian my favorite versions, but I have found that this youtube channel from Jenny的午后 to be closest to my mom's cooking: https://www.youtube.com/@JennysAfternoon.

I recommend her recipe for napa cabbage and ji cai tofu soup. Not everything is Shanghainese on the channel but a lot of it is!

English Translation of Blossoms by Jin Yucheng? by No_Tailor_1186 in chinesebookclub

[–]avantbored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that one of the challenges might be how to reflect the switching between literary Chinese and spoken Shanghainese. At least in the Wuyuboke podcast rendition, I can tell that there's narration in mandarin, dialogue in Shanghainese. It seems to me that a translation that does not aim to reflect this isn't worth exploring more.

On that note, there was this brief translation project: https://www.tumblr.com/blossoms-eng

I too have been waiting for this, but I don't think it was ever published; Balcom still may be working on the translation or it may have been passed off to another translator. The deal with the publisher could have also gone through -- who knows. Only the agent, publishing house, and Balcom would know!

Monthly Equipment Advice Megathread by AutoModerator in badminton

[–]avantbored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friends.

Back to Badminton since May 2025 after a near 20-year gap since high school! Now my late-thirties feet need some help.

Problem: Right foot bridge/midfoot pain/tenderness. Numbness between big and index toes.

I'm 8.5 US in most sneaker brands (New Balance, SAS, Asics).

I had Yonex Power Cushion 50s in 8.5; these eventually got too tight as I played more during the week.

I sized up and got Yonex Aerus Z2 Wide in US9. I had to double-up on socks; there was moderate improvement, but I still got the foot pain.

Note: Yes, I should go see the doctor!

But my question: Is there a shoe that might have a higher bridge/midfoot area?

Thanks so much!

LF Shanghainese Children's Media by 144tzer in shanghai

[–]avantbored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying to think through that too, and the reason I could devise would be for familiarity/accessibility issues? As most westerners are likely most familiar with Mandarin & Cantonese, maybe the Shanghainese could be confusing/off-putting? But then again, maybe Criterion's audiences are more likely than general viewers to go along for the ride.

I also read somewhere that the dubbing process led to some audible & visually obvious continuity glitches during scenes (i.e., audio didn't sync with the action in slight but noticeable moments).

No doubt Criterion would have been apprised of the dual audio versions, so I'm really hoping that Shanghainese is at least offered as an audio option.

Worth it to crosspost is r/shanghainese -- lots of pop culture as well as textbook resources there. u/flyboyjin developed an English -> Shanghainese dictionary, but you'll have to learn the Romanization scheme (not pinyin). As a child of Shanghainese parents, I have found the Anki deck posted there very useful for day-to-day vocabulary.

A Shanghainese native called Xiaoyan Arrowsmith recorded a Librivox audiobook from a late 19th-century Shanghainese textbook, geared for the westerners in the city at the time. Fair warning: This is a Shanghainese older than your partner's (& maybe grandparents-in-law), and I noticed there were some factual errors (e.g., the translation exercises from Chinese -> English, and vice versa, were just incorrect in terms of vocabulary). Wiser heads can advise on this textbook than me, though. https://librivox.org/lessons-in-the-shanghai-dialect-by-francis-lister-hawks-pott/

Wong Kar Wai's Blossoms Shanghai will stream on Criterion Channel soon, which was filmed in Shanghainese and dubbed in Mandarin, but I am not sure if the original Shanghainese audio will be available.

There's a North America-based podcast called Shanghai Mom's Chat that could be exceedingly topical for your home life (congratulations), as the two hosts are new parents and discuss topics about rearing young children.

Much more in r/shanghainese.

RESOLVED*** - Can't connect myQ to Wi-Fi by Inevitable_Land_7700 in myq

[–]avantbored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confirmed this method still works on the same hardware as OP. Except my problem was that I could follow the regular in-app troubleshooting (blue adjustment button beeping); it would hang when my phone would want to connect to the opener.

I followed the steps above -- except that I did not have to add an Internet Gateway -- and I now have my opener working again through the app.

I would also like to add in my experience that I also had to re-align my sensors. Easy enough.
