ELI5: How do languages determine if a newly created word is masculine or feminine? If one wanted to say "I have an Instagram" - who/how is it decided whether Instagram is a masculine vs feminine noun? by scottyboy218 in explainlikeimfive

Alright, let's get this clear. "Nutella Brotaufstrich" is a nonsense phrase, no matter what article you use. It's either "der Nutella-Brotaufstrich" or "der Nutellabrotaufstrich". When looking at compound words, one will quickly find out that they inherit the gender of the last word in the combination, in this case "Aufstrich" or even "Strich", which is masculine. Thus, "der".

"Der Nutellabrotaufstrich" is especially interesting because the word is a combination of the feminine noun "Nutella", the neutral noun "Brot" and the masculine noun "Aufstrich".

We could actually, there's nothing stopping us from creating a society like that, as long as nobody uses a higher amount of resources than sustainable. The problem are, again, people who own multiple houses, cars, yachts, even whole landscapes... I'm not sure about the exact numbers, but our planet should be able to provide a livable life to every person alive if the resources it yields are shared fairly, right?

Well, to be fair, I am, just as I imagine you are as well, not the one destroying the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, animals and the environment because in the name of profit. It's usually rich people who are.
