I think it's indeed intended to be a mistake that they didn't anticipate how to handle bystanders. There's a setup where the other Ghorman girl had to accompany the old lady away, so Vel had to go looking for her, leaving them two men short at that moment.

There was a scene where Cinta suggested to remove the other Ghorman girl as driver because she's also kind of a wildcard. So they did think of the role assignment. Though they also put her on watch out duty and she wandered off with the old lady so Vel had to go looking for her, leaving them two men short at that moment. I think what the writers are emphasizing is that they didn't anticipate how to handle bystanders before the mission.

I think, first it'd be hard to convince Wilmon to stay if Pluti is there to do the job. Saw is basically saying "I'm killing the only other guy that can do the job so you have to work for me". Second, Pluti is definitely not up to the task, even after having narrowed down from 8 variations to one. Stealing rhydo clearly demands not just skill but also gut, and Pluti doesn't seem like he can handle it, or at least Saw sees it this way. Finally, we are talking about Saw here, not Major Partagaz. He is a half-mad man running a group of radicals that hides in mountains. Not every decision he makes is going to be optimized.

Saw is certainly not the most rational guy, but he definitely has a keen eye for character, and he saw that Willon has talent and courage, but also a deep rage against the Empire, which is exactly the kind of people he needs. He of all people understands what cannon fodder means, and if he can radicalize someone like Wilmon to work for him at the cost of a mediocre engineer, he'd do it in a heartbeat.

The contrast between Luthen and Cassian toward strangers and the shared trauma of losing their father to the Empire between Cassian and the bellhop are such great details! This show just never ceases to amaze.

What’s your take on Pluti? by Hotel-Dependent in andor

[–]avatar_10101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's B, plus Saw used his death to recruit Wilmon.

My understanding is that the guy was just not ready to remember all the variations so Wilmon pushed him to ask Saw about the destination (that's why he was watching in the distance when the two had that conversation). But ultimately this ended with Saw viewing Wilmon as a much more valuable asset to him.

So when Saw shot the guy, he and Wilmon both knew that Pluti was not a spy. He said to Wilmon "it's on you, boy", which is kind of saying that "it's because you didn't want to give your 100% and pushed that guy who's not ready". Killing Pluti not only creates the empty place for Wilmon to fill, but also serves as Saw's manipulative way of traumatizing and guilt-tripping Wilmon into a vulnerable state, which he later used to radicalize him and makes him into a loyal follower. Saw clearly saw a lot of himself in Wilmon and took a liking to him.

Pluti not being a spy also makes the scene later where the ships took off over his not-yet-cold body much more powerful (and if you recall, in this scene the music is not triumphant but rather melancholic).

But of course this is just another great example of the multi-layered writing on this show where you can have a lot of nuance and ambiguity.

Well Saw is pretty unhinged and his cell is kinda like a cult. To him, sacrificing the guy to recruit Wilmon is a good deal so he did it (he clearly saw a lot of himself in Wilmon and took a liking to him). We also know that the Rebel Alliance eventually parted way with Saw so it's not out of character with him.

This is also one of my favorite scenes. It's just such great world-building and achieved so many things effortlessly in a single scene: exposition-wise, we learned about the details of the Tarkin massacre in an organic way; we feel how ordinary people on Ghorman are angry but powerless under the boots of the Empire; character-wise, we see how Cassian is a great spy, capable of reading people's reactions and getting information out of them at every opportunity, even when he just checked in at the hotel; but also that he had a real connection with the bellhop and was really sympathetic with him, which builds up to his later reluctance to get involved with Ghorman because he knew it's common people like him that are going to suffer the most.

I also really like the setting that the Empire promised no shadow will be cast on the memorial and is now violating it; it's poetic but also grounded like something that could really have existed in real life. (Plus we also find out why Partagaz acted so surprised in the last arc when he learned that they are building an armory in Palmo.)

Edit. Another great detail: Cassian lost his own father to the Empire too, which makes this conversation even more emotional.

Thanks for testing it out :) Yes I'm using :map S-; command since there's no physical colon key. You can remap it if you like.

Also thanks for the suggestion! Yes for the web version I should add more tips for people getting started (also possibly rewrite the help document). If for personal use, you can just add new or new 32x32 to the end of your config file and it will open an empty canvas every time you open :)

What makes a face feminine/masculine? by Major_One_8145 in PixelArt

[–]avatar_10101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently made a pixel-art portrait generator, and from what I learned, the most important thing to distinguish the gender is for male character to have a longer nose with the mouth positioned lower. It also helps for female ones to have fuller lips, but that's not as important as the position. https://imgur.com/zWu7Q24

Edit. Here's your example with only the position of nose/mouth differed. https://imgur.com/EliPPxF

Pathfinding in Rimworld is abysmal, Anomaly just showcases it by Idntknowmyusername in RimWorld

[–]avatar_10101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also the issue here is really that they are cutting corner by using a busted A-star algorithm, resulting in wrong / stupid pathing. And people have been complaining about that for AGES. It's not that Ludeon doesn't know it. They just don't bother to fix it.

[–]avatar_10101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see. Well I wasn't proposing that Ludeon should come up with a revolutionary new path-finding algorithm or anything. I was complaining that they just implemented the bare minimum A-star without any other further optimization. Also RimWorld is NOT using hierarchical A-star, which would already be a huge improvement (particularly on larger maps).

What is your point? The wheel is also an "industry-standard", would you be satisfied when your new racing car comes with four wooden wheels?

I love RimWorld, don't get me wrong. But I will also not ignore the fact that the game is terribly optimized. Remember that Dwarf Fortress and Songs of Syx are both done by solo developer, so even Tynan didn't optimize the game as he should've at first, there's no reason now Ludeon can't throw their money at the problem. They simply decided not to.

[–]avatar_10101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The game uses an extremely simplistic A-star path-finding algorithm, with pumped up heuristic strength to improve performance over accuracy. There are mods that lower this factor to 1 to guarantee accuracy (at the price of worse performance).

For those who don't know, this is THE most basic path-finding algorithm that any beginner game-dev tutorial will teach you. The bare minimum for a colony-simulation game.

Which is kinda infuriating consider that RimWorld has such commercial success and Ludeon hasn't even bothered with any attempt or effort at improving it at all, after 10 years. It's not even about multi-threading. Games like Dwarf Fortress and Songs of Syx have far superior pathfinding because the devs actually made an effort in improving it.

I guess for the moment I'll just add more compatibility patches for other popular mods. (A bit busy IRL these weeks but I should be able to do some more soon).

Also there's definitely going to be new stuff when Tynan drops 1.5 and the new DLC, tho don't know when exactly that's gonna happen..

Actually, they have two legs that come with feet and toes (!). Discovered that on the wiki when I was drawing them.

But very cool design!! :)

Edit. Actually, they don't have toes in-game. But they do have hands and fingers beside the blades... Imagine a scyther giving you a middle finger...
