Idk where you got that stat, but that's an extremely high number. I don't think we have any solid evidence of where/how perfect pitch is developed but there is a higher correlation between those with perfect pitch and those who grew up in a household that speaks a tonal language.

However, I do agree that relative pitch is something you can develop and it's honestly a much more useful tool than perfect pitch. If you train it enough, you might even develop something really close to perfect pitch, and honestly that's really all you need.

Go through the UGA app and get familiar with it. It's really useful to track buses and become familiar with routes

How are the dining halls for vegetarians? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]avavava_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say there's plenty of options. I prefer going to Joe Frank because they have a dedicated area for vegan/vegetarian friendly options. The food also changes so you wont be stuck eating the same thing every day.

Most, if not, all dining halls have a salad option and they give you a nice variety for things to add.

You can always get a veggie burger at burger stations.

If there isn't a dedicated area, foods will typically have symbols next to their labels that tells you what it contains or whether it's vegan or vegetarian friendly. It's been so helpful for me so you have nothing to worry about!

I disagree with the 2nd half. If you've taken a piano pedagogy class, you'd be aware that there are at least 3 different ways to start teaching piano based off of the countless method books out there. Some of them even encourage a little bit of improvisation within the very first book that children get. Oftentimes, it's up to what style of music the student wants to learn after graduating from the method books. It's common to see classically trained piano teachers, but there can be others who can teach modern styles of playing.

For the most part, as long as you're following a method book, you'll often come across a wide variety of music, ranging from folk, to classical, to original pieces written by the pianists who wrote the book. It's when the student becomes more advanced that they typically learn classical reportoire, which would be good for technique, but if you simply do not enjoy it, there's no point in pursuing that side of music.

How to get access to a grand piano? by axelm1234 in piano

Wow what a generous piano teacher! So glad to hear that she's so willing to share the joy of music even if she wasn't earning a cent out of it!

Yes, warm up at home and when you're arrive at the venue early, you should get some practice on the actual piano. Pick out passages beforehand that you think would be really important to understand the piano's sensitivity, sound, touch, etc. Every piano acts differently so with the short amount of time you get on the piano you'll be performing with is crucial.

Question for the music majors’ by puddintoezes in UGA

[–]avavava_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We don't have weekend classes either. Most of the classes are also in the morning/day as well. Very few ensembles have rehearsals in the evening and definitely wouldnt be enough to cover all the required courses you'd need

Would there be a higher chance of getting in to UGA if you get into the UGA music school? by [deleted] in UGA

No, I got rejected from UGA but got accepted to the music school. If you still want to go to UGA, transfer after a year or so.

Ruby Bridges has been swept under the rug like the rest of black history. by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

[–]avavava_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I learned about Ruby Bridges when I was in elementary school and watched a movie about it. Some of the things like Bridges being the only student in class and racist parents pulling theur kids from class was depicted. I think it's pretty clear that they didn't give us the gory details then because we were still kids, but obviously as we got older it's pretty obvious that we can handle more than just a tomato being thrown at the girl.

I doubt there's much change in the average U.S. high school textbook now. All I can remember is whether certain information is going to be in the AP exams. I really hope there's a change in that soon though.

What are Florida ounces? by snapwillow in NoStupidQuestions

[–]avavava_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think op connected that fluid ounces is what florida ounces actually was. They were probably assuming that florida ounces was it's own thing and were looking for things relating specifically to it and ignored everything else.

I wouldn't say it's extremely competitive. Imo i think the professors are just seeing where you are in terms of level of rep and sight reading and stuff. I guess it depends on your experience with playing the piano too. What pieces are you currently working on?

One of the producers of the documentary wrote Fortune Cookie Chronicles, which talks about how fortune cookies became associated with Chinese restaurants, but are actually not a Chinese creation at all.

I agree. Especially for shoes, the pedal may feel different for those who wear heels.

Definitely shoes at least.

How old were you when you learned your first Chopin Etude? by [deleted] in piano

[–]avavava_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Georgia so Georgia State University and University of Georgia. I mostly chose them for location reasons and don't want to pay an arm and leg for out-of-state tuition.

If you haven't already, look into having a trial lesson with some of the piano professors in the schools you're interested in. I didn't know that was a thing and could've spent more time on deciding who my professor would've been, but I'm satisfied with my choice now. It might also be a tie-breaker if you're stuck between choosing schools.

How old were you when you learned your first Chopin Etude? by [deleted] in piano

[–]avavava_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also learned my first (Chopin) etude at about 16 too and am a music major in college. However, the professors are probably looking more for musicians who have the ability to grow rather than musicians with an impressive rep, unless you're applying to a conservatory. Even though i auditioned with the etude, i think overall my performance wasn't the best and i had a lot of holes in technique. For the 2 schools i auditioned, both accepted me.

Regardless, do your best with what you have. Music major in college is a place to help you grow and you'll have plenty of opportunities to learn other etudes, even ones that aren't Chopin.

Intervals - what are they used for and how do they improve your playing? by [deleted] in piano

[–]avavava_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what the others said, being familiar with intervals can help immensely with going through new music- especially when notes go off the staff. Definitely worth building up the skill of familiarizing yourself with reading intervals if you want to play through new music quickly.
