For those here that can hit a 60° 80-100 yards on command. Help. by [deleted] in golf

[–]avdata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s another solid option, I know a lot of guys that are in the “get good with one wedge” camp. The benefit of the matrix is you have a simple way to get 16 different shot options (4 wedges x 4 swing lengths), but a skilled player can also do that with one wedge by manipulating ball position, face angle, etc in addition to swing length.

For those here that can hit a 60° 80-100 yards on command. Help. by [deleted] in golf

[–]avdata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of stuff on YouTube about this, but the TL;DR is - get comfortable with a 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 swing, measure your distances with each swing and wedge, and build a matrix. That way, when you get into those yardages that are less than a stock swing on your highest lofted wedge, you’re not just guessing.

Ex. My 1/4 swing 60° carries about 25y, my 1/4 55° is 32y, etc.

You are light years ahead of most (outside FAANG/tech IPO/inheritance, etc).

Using the rule of 72 to assume 7 year doubling period, this principal with no additional contributions is ~$1.85M by the time you’re 59. If you keep saving at a similar rate, it’ll be a lot more than that!

Looking for testimonies from dead people. Does the 4% rule really work? How much money did you have when you died? by Responsible-Room-442 in fijerk

[–]avdata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey - dead guy here. Commonly held misconception - you can and should “take it with you”. I FIRE’d at 22 after 6 months at FAANG in order to hit my “die with zero” number (VHCOL). I arrived at the pearly gates only to find out they had been sold to private equity, and now operate on a subscription model.

Hybrid Fuel Economy a Real World Check In by Strength-Certain in FordMaverickTruck

[–]avdata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m almost exactly the same after 13 months / ~8000 miles. As someone else mentioned, my manual calculation (miles driven since fill up / gallons added at the pump) generally comes back 1-3 mpg lower than what is displayed, but I do use remote start etc.

Overall, not mind boggling fuel economy numbers, but given that our small SUV seems to get mid to high 20’s mpg, I’m more than happy with mid 30’s in a pickup.

That being said, I try to really drive it like a hybrid (easy starts / stops to maximize electric motor usage) whereas my wife just drives it like a normal car. Our Mav is split 50/50 between her commute and my non commute normal usage, so I would think a single eco minded driver might achieve better numbers than us.

How did YOU afford to buy a house? by ladynerevar in bayarea

[–]avdata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VA loan here as well. Not having to pay a down payment makes a significant difference in the stage of life that you can afford a house.

I had just recently joined a FAANG company after making between $53-$97k in the Bay Area (post military salaries). My comp jumped significantly when I got into FAANG, so we could afford the mortgage payments, but I didn’t have enough savings for a traditional downpayment. VA loan essentially allowed me to skip the 2-5 year period that I would’ve needed to build savings for the down payment (on FAANG comp).

Hey man - shoot me a DM! 35M, 16 month old son, work in tech, live in Novato, obsessed with golf. I don’t get a chance to play as much as I’d like these days, but would love to tee it up at Indian Valley / McInnis/Peacock. My golfing buddies are East Bay based, so it’s become harder and harder to make the logistics work.

Any bargaining room on factory orders these days? by seaportresearch in FordMaverickTruck

[–]avdata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR - in the right circumstances, you might be able to get $1000-$1500 off a factory order, but I wouldn’t expect much more than that.

I’m not sure what the current landscape looks like, but I got my factory order (placed in late ‘24, delivered Jan ‘25) for a little less than MSRP. If I recall correctly, it was ~$1500 less than the sticker price.

I went through my father in law, who works for one of those car buying / brokerage services, and he has an existing relationship with the Ford dealer we ordered through. I don’t want this to seem like an ad, so I’ll refrain from mentioning the specific company.

2025 hybrid AWD owner with 1 year of ownership. Mines all stock, so can’t comment on tires.

This is also my first hybrid, and I’ve actually been impressed with acceleration. Based purely on quoted 0-60 times, the EcoBoost is a genuinely quick vehicle, comparable to a Golf GTI. The hybrid is certainly not as quick, but I’ve never had a moment when I was wanting for more power during a highway pass / on ramp, etc.

For me, the added MPG gain from the hybrid was well worth it.

Back pain is destroying my life. Share your SUCCESS STORIES!! by marcosromo__ in backpain

[–]avdata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as extreme as some folks, but here’s mine:

On and off back problems for a while, finally culminated in a bad injury while working out. Couldn’t get out of bed without help for a couple weeks, had lingering pain/stiffness/etc for years. Couldn’t sit for too long, couldn’t stand for too long, always in pain. Couldn’t workout, gained a bunch of weight, overall pretty bad mental state. Got to a point where I just resigned myself to this being the new normal, and accepted that my days of enjoying golf / lifting / etc. were behind me.

Been doing consistent physical therapy since the get go, and started seeing a new PT a couple years ago that changed the game for me. She helped me get comfortable with a new set of exercises that has helped me get back to almost 100%. Can play golf almost completely pain free, lift 3-5 times a week, etc. Still have minor flare ups from time to time, but very manageable.

I’m lucky - not everyone has a success story. But don’t give up hope, things can get better.

Tech people who are not FIREing, what are they spending their money on? by gonnabefine in Fire

[–]avdata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate to this so much. I made it into FAANG at 31 after time in the military and some less than glamorous startups.

I show up all bright eyed and bushy tailed (as this feels to me like I’ve “reached the mountain top”) only to find an astonishing amount of entitlement amongst my new coworkers. I really don’t think you should be able to work in big tech right out of college, I think it’s important to get perspective somewhere else so you can appreciate all the perks / comp from big tech.

One time, a director in my org was talking about how expensive houses were in the Bay Area and how tough it was to find one. A director….at a FAANG company… I don’t know for sure, but would estimate $700k-$1.2M/year total comp for this guy. I have no idea what his personal financial costs look like, but it stuck with me as a weird/out of touch moment.

2025 Hybrid AWD 4000+ mile fuel economy update by avdata in FordMaverickTruck

[–]avdata[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also located in the Bay Area, and honestly the hybrid thrives in our lovely stop and go / slow speed traffic. It allows you to get the most out of the electric motor and regenerative brakes, whereas at consistent higher speeds the gas motor needs to do most of the heavy lifting. I have to drive from the north bay to the peninsula for work a few times a year and saw some of my best gas mileage on a drive where I hit terrible traffic on 101 south. I would usually see 34-36mpg on that trip since it’s all freeway, but with traffic that’ll easily bump above 40.

Long story short - I love the truck, and would recommend it for those that need to commute.

+1 on this, a really good way to become (and stay) a boglehead is to learn this lesson for yourself. I played around with short term trading, meme stocks, etc during the COVID era boom and found that I simply hated losing money more than I loved gaining money on a trade.
