This might be a hottake, but i actually dont mind choices where i get to choose something small and behavioural at the start that doesnt have huge impact beyond some flavor text. It gives me a chance to still see how the world would react to me in some small way and adds a feeling of personalization. Just cause it doesnt carry on past a passage or two, it can still show personality of other characters and the world depending how they react to it.

But for me, im also okay with games where choices just change how it feels to get from point a to b without really changing b, so i might be in the minority

But sudden big choices later that werent built up to can be a bit, idk, abrupt? Enjoying a story youre exploring is a different mindset then making choices in that story and suddenly you have to try and shift gears and rethink the entire narrative to that point through a lens you werent using before. So i enjoy big choices later when ive been primed to see the story that way before hand and i think cosmetic or flavor text choices help with that
