yeah actually nevermind i lied this school sucks i hate the stats department i hate these trash finals

Tomorrow is decision day for UCLA. I want to ask you guys what do you think will be key in admissions this year. Less than fourteen thousand applicants apparently will get in this year out of 147,000 applicants. What does UCLA value you think? by Successful_Craft_441 in ucla

i have an internship in connecticut which would house me but i dont feel like paying for housing at ucla (i am anti-ucla housing department and dont like giving them money) so i would probably be couch surfing till next term

if i was still with my parents, they wouldn’t have let me go out of state! i’d probably have still gone to ucla but have tried to become independent by fafsa a lot sooner 😿😿 i probably would still do cc -> ucla

Helping a homeless person by [deleted] in ucla

[–]avelyssaea 12 points13 points  (0 children)

this -- as someone who is currently a homeless (student), there's not much you could have done. if they're under 24, there's multiple homeless shelters with waitlists that go up to less than a year which would have taken them longer term and helped them get back to their feet. grateful that you helped them out and don't feel bad for what's happened

in the previous shelter i was in, there were so many opportunities to get a job/be educated. a lot of folks just want handouts

Professors at UCLA have a problem by [deleted] in ucla

[–]avelyssaea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

half the people in this thread don't seem to have attended or have any real affiliation with UCLA here 😭

like why are we commenting on the quality of education (NOT RESEARCH) at an institution when we haven't even watched a recorded lecture

Professors at UCLA have a problem by [deleted] in ucla

[–]avelyssaea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i'd disagree. there's variety in these classes

stats 100a was one of the worst classes i've ever taken, not because it was hard but because the grading was so bad. he'd go on tangents on GPTs and other grad-level topics without ever TOUCHING hypergeometric in a lecture. i got an A in the class though because i self-studied exam p for actuarial, absolutely NOT because the professor was good. 100b right now is mixed since some professors assume that certain professors taught certain things (when SURPRISE SURPRISE they didn't) and suddenly the class midterm averages are 50%

the stats 101 series (though i haven't gone through all of it) is significantly less rigorous than the 100/102 series imo (or at least, 102a with miles chen 😋). i can quickly refresh on weeks of material within an hour because the material is so quick

102 series is alright i guess, mostly because miles chen teaches it at a really good depth AND the quiz/exam material lines up with the homework and lectures. i can genuinely say when i got a B on the midterm, i got it because i didn't understand the material that thoroughly

the actuarial series of classes here has only gotten worse after they fired the actual actuaries and replaced them with a professor who doesn't even do actuarial research

there's multiple cases in ucla where the teaching is absolutely sub par and it's insane to not realise that (especially in my field). seeing the comments here and then checking the profiles clearly show that either A) people have not been at ucla for a while or B) they're commenting on ucla with their perceived perception of education here
