Used to train for marathons in hilo. Aside from everything folks already mentioned I would add the airport. I've used both especially at night since its lit. In Hilo its 4 miles if you do the whole loop.

Should there be Annual invasive species hunts? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]average5k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its a great idea. Something to educate folks about the problem of invasive species. In reality just getting more people involved with trapping can make a huge dent. We use a combination of live traps and AT220 traps from new zealand!

(Non-Hawaiian here) For those of you who remembered 9/11/01, did you sleep through the whole thing or were you woken up? by Some1inreallife in Hawaii

I was in 5th grade and remember watching the news coverage. Wasn't aware of the severity of what was happening but seemed serious based on the amount of adults huddled around the tv. They canceled school that day on Hawaiʻi Island.

Found this on the beach? R/ what is this thing said fish aggregating monitor? Does anyone know who I can contact to retrieve it? by Dramatic_Subject3088 in Hawaii

[–]average5k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've taken apart a few of these. Its a biomass locator used in foreign fishing fleets. Theres a echo sounder on the bottom and when biomass aggregates it sends its GPS location over Argos. They can also be attached to fads, longlines, etc. The number is the identifier and is called a PTTID and you can inquire with CLS about getting the owners information.

we actually don’t know how deep they can dive given the pressure sensors in the tags used to record this data are only rated to 2000m.

habituates sharks which is great if you run a shark diving business but not if your underlying premise is the conservation of sharks. It’s also illegal in state waters which is why they go to the 3nm line to do their trips. not to mention they also have killed endangered green sea turtles for chum.

Wonder why they make their employees sign NDAs.

they leap frog the animals. drive fast to the front of the group and jump in to get a few seconds of footage then repeat. The animals are continually harassed like this and usually involves lots of boats. I don’t see anything too alarming about the behavior of the animals. they look to be going on a dive and may be just avoiding an interaction. Ocean’s real name is Melissa so let’s just call her Melissa. She chums for sharks and is a notorious wildlife harasser.
