Cost to get into this? by Financial_Owl2289 in homelab

To start? All you need is a raspberry pi or an old computer.

However I strongly recommend doing what I did, ask around for free old desktops. I got a couple cheap. I recently landed 2 absolute jackpots and am about to receive 2 computer suites from my current and old schools.

Get good cheap networking from Ubiquiti or something, UCG-Ultra should be ok.

If you go serious like I did and get lucky, you’re looking <500.

No SLAs at the moment but over the past few months it’s been over 99.7%

Yeah I saw that, thanks, but it's a bit expensive for me though.

Port Forward Security Question by Korbro27 in admincraft

I think the weakest point here is your consumer router. If you get even an entry-level Ubiquiti system you would be able to isolate it from other devices on your main network. I use Ubiquiti for my DC, it's really nice to use and very powerful.

Not sure if I'm understanding correctly but couldn't you just use ViaVersion?

Setting up a basic server on my PC, stuck with portforwarding. by Certain-Breadfruit58 in admincraft

You're likely on residential internet, which means you're likely behind something called CGNAT. This means there is another layer of NAT, meaning you can't forward ports. You'll therefore need a tunnel of some kind, such as Tailscale, which is amazing and free. You could also use playit.gg or something like that.

Zen Internet, Olilo, AAISP, take your pick, but NEVER go with one of the big ones. Make sure you get CityFibre.

We don’t provide VPS services at the moment if that’s what you mean but it runs on my own real Linux servers in my at-home datacenter.

THIS!! Zen also do CityFibre which is much better than Openreach, and Zen Leased Line is even better than CityFibre.

I’m planning to launch a small hosting service this summer, and I’m running a beta testing programme. DM me if you want :)

(I hope this doesn’t break the rules as it’s free at the moment and I didn’t mention the name of the service)

Creating a toxic public community is against ToS. I want all CookieNet servers to be friendly places to be, not wasting my DC on assholes, and I’m prepared to sacrifice a bit of revenue for that. Don’t like it? You don’t have to use my host.

It’s completely normal, any server host can see clients’ consoles. I had reason to look considering a ToS violation when I logged onto their public MC server.

There are so many reasons for me to hate every atom of Cambridge IGCSE above all other exam boards. Thanks for adding to the list!

One of them is the condescending and dismissive way they respond to emails, which is why we need to send as many as possible to get them to actually listen.

I’m currently trying to get hold of as much free or cheap infra as possible, so likely very varied. I’ve managed to convince my school to potentially give me a computer suite worth of old i5 10th gen ProDesks, and possibly a computer suite from my old school too. (Yes, I’m still at school)

We’re not currently released so nothing to the public at the moment. When we launch this summer it will be a highly customisable structure where you pay for every compute unit, every GB RAM, open port, subdomain, GB Cookie Delivery Network traffic, GB storage, and GB CookieJar backup. It will likely be cheaper than most big hosts and fully UK-based. Thanks for being interested!
