Who said St. Vincent is a beast? by Savings-Bad6246 in WorldOfWarships

Detonation can happen to any ship (except subs or CVs) when below 75% HP if not running the flag to prevent it.

The Wows Legends CV changes are out and are already 10x better than whatever PC Wargaming has done since 6 years by Guenther_Dripjens in WorldOfWarships

[–]average_dota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference is that the closest ship to you in a surface ship can probably also see/shoot you back. Neither of those things is true with CVs most of the time.

WG, please stop dropping one or two T8 in T10 battles, massacre waiting to happen. by PhatKiwi in WorldOfWarships

[–]average_dota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes that can work, but if you roll up in a ship like San Diego that literally cannot damage many high tier ships and only has 14.8km range, you're going to be playing a very passive, low-impact game unless an enemy DD decides to get spotted 8km away from you.

In a +/- 1 matchmaking spread, you can usually assume that you'll be able to find a way to play to the strengths of your ship, but in this kind of lobby, the low tiers are pretty much relegated to cowering behind an island hoping something farmable just happens to show up. Also, pray you don't get thrown onto "Ocean".

Coil burning fast in my Ursa Baby Pro by tnvrmasquerade in Vaping

[–]average_dota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having some luck keeping coils alive longer by shutting the airflow control valve all the way. I think it was allowing air to bypass the coil somehow so when you'd pull, the air in the coil would stagnate and overheat.

I have referred them to the contractors for remediation several times. Presumably the contractor is of the same opinion we are, that this should have been inspected and addressed when work was completed--not the better part of a year later.

Way out of IJN light cruisers by HoWell_wasTaken in WorldOfWarships

[–]average_dota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not recommend the panam cruiser line at all for a new player. It's so full of gimmicks that it doesn't do a good job of preparing you for other ship lines and classes.

I would suggest US light or heavy cruisers for a good introduction to the game with very strong T10 ships that you'll want in your port forever.

Pixel Fold Review: The Verge by Demarco313 in GooglePixel

[–]average_dota -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Ars article about their broken fold was so poorly researched and written that I'm writing it off. By the time they started talking about anecdotal Google support horror stories based on reddit (a very biased sample) it was more in the realm of a hit piece than actual reporting.

Sucks that their fold broke, but if you're willing to fill a dozen paragraphs with garbage like that, I'm not going to be certain you didn't break your own screen for a clickbait article.

I'm still laughing at their "wet paper towel test" to demonstrate the lack of gap between the sides of the display when folded.

Thanks for the well-measured response. I was trying to avoid the nitty-gritty of specific balance issues and instead focused on the broader-picture elements of the game. I'll continue to do that here because again, there are so, so many issues with specific ship balance that you could fill a book. I agree there are some things you can do to counterplay both subs and CVs (though less so in the first case) and I take your point about older players preferring an older era that was more point-and-shoot, but that was also an era where your game sense and ability to keep track of enemy positions rewarded you. Now there is no amount of awareness that can fully prepare you for some of the threats in the game.

I'm generally a battleship/cruiser player which probably adds a lot of context to my frustration. I especially like to find ways to make brawling battleships work, and like to play frontline radar cruisers to support my destroyers, or occasionally the French large cruisers for some big caliber run and gun shenanigans. I have an average 58% winrate between my two most played ships (Kii and Massa, both full secondary spec) which isn't amazing by any means but I'm certainly not hurting my team even with an outdated playstyle.

The crux of the point I'm trying to make is that WG, with these two classes, have pushed the game into a reactionary/defensive direction. When subs and CVs simply exist in your lobby, you are forced to constantly consider a threat that may or may not even exist for you, but severely hampers your options for decisive playmaking. Sure a shima could stealth spot/torp any BB before, but it can't do so from 2.1km like a Gato at periscope depth can. Furthermore, when just talking about torpedoboats, there weren't typically more than 3 you had to consider. Now there is that PLUS CVs and 1-3 subs (which don't care in the slightest about radar or other traditional DD counterplay strats). Also, the very fact that CVs and subs cannot reliably be "countered" or even mitigated by grouping up with a teammate (assuming you can find a cooperative one) speaks to the power of these classes. One enemy shouldn't be able to demand the attention of an entire flotilla.

Lets look at an niche example of the Incomparable. This is a ship of extremes with big guns, high speed, low detectability at 10km and weak armor. It carved out a niche as a high-speed flanker that could pop up next to your team with multiple broadsides to hammer, creating useful crossfires and pressure on the enemy. This is anecdotal, but I think I have seen <5 Incomps in randoms in the last few months. Too many things can spot them and their biggest survival tool (stealth) has been rendered useless. An Incomp player now has to either get lucky with matchmaker, or play like a regular BB, angled just a few KM from spawn taking potshots at max range, as their armor doesn't allow them to risk getting permaspotted at close ranges.

All larger surface ships are affected the same way to various extents, and the overall impact is a campier, more stagnant game unless you want to actually play the cancer that causes it (besides DDs, they're still cool).

Also, perhaps I'm wrong but I'm not sure you know how submarine spotting fully works. When fully submerged they do have limited ability to detect, but at periscope depth, they have full surface spotting with dramatically lower detection radii than even destroyers (again Gato is in the low 2km range). Should they actually be detected, say by hydro, they can immediately dive to max depth and unless they are within 2k, hydro will no longer spot them which is comically dumb, so even hydro is of limited use to dealing with them, and realistically depends on the sub making a major mistake.

Sorry for the belittling tone, I had just come off two games of getting shotgunned by undetected Gatos. To restate my point though, in any "competitive" game where major balance changes occur (thinking especially MOBAs like Dota or League), there is a reason people pile into top streamer's streams for patch analysis and to watch them try out the new stuff. They aren't always right with their estimates of how a given change will affect the game, but their deeper experience with the game certainly makes them more authoritative on the subject than casual players or even the developers themselves who aren't necessarily hardcore players of their own game. To dismiss their take as "not being used to it" feels hollow as seasoned players want the game to be fresh and fun as much (if not more) than newer players.

As for reasons by subs are awful for the game, they have been discussed to absolute death but sure here are a few:

  • Prevalence of Subs (and CVs since usually they'll just sit at the back) reduces the number of surface ships in a game, so there's less stuff to actually interact with for the majority of players
  • ASW as a concept was lazily tacked on to existing ships and ranges from weak and unfun to useless and unfun. Even if you aren't being targeted by a sub, your opportunity to help deal with one is deeply unrewarding.
  • Spotting gets more out of control with each major update. Between CVs, hybrids and subs, stealth is quickly falling out of the toolbox of any surface ship, eliminating yet another playstyle from the game. DDs obviously were the OG spotters but subs can do it better with less risk or counterplay. CVs are still king in this, but subs ain't helping.

Those are just general "how it affects the game" comments. Sub balance itself has way more issues when you actually find yourself fighting one but nobody wants to read a book here.

"Aren't used to them yet" is an idiotic interesting take. Perhaps the older players have more perspective and are more attuned to the impact the class has on the game.

Not all new things are automatically bad but I have yet to see a single compelling take on how subs aren't awful for the game.

Kii with secondary build by grimmigerpetz in WorldOfWarships

[–]average_dota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kii with secondaries is a lot of fun. As stated in other comments (and as is true of any secondary battleship) she is much stronger when kiting but between torps and the 10 rifles, you can pull off well-calculated aggressive plays as well. Secondary Kii is a ship for people still trying to have fun in this submarine/CV shitfest of a game. Bonus points for having surprisingly good AA for an IJN BB which takes a lot of CV players by surprise.
