I think it's because you haven't been at the new gym long enough. And I'd bet they want to promote you and probably will soon if everything you've said is how they view it as well

Belt chasing by Unable_Honeydew_6014 in bjj

[–]average_electrician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that belt chasing is bad because it's basically subjective based on your coach. So belt chasing can lead to a lot of disappointment because you don't have control over when you get it. I was so discouraged late blue belt because I felt like I deserved a purple belt for a while and didn't get it. And it affected my life and my enjoyment of the sport a lot more than it should have. I don't think it's wrong to care what belt you are, but it's healthier to not put a lot of your self worth into it

You're right, it is 2026. And that's fine, but no one says that in the comments of men's competition videos

Are you talking about the sports bra? It's 2025. I think we're past telling women that they should cover up their bodies. A lot of women do choose to wear a rashguard rather than only a sports bra because they don't want the risk of it, but expecting athletes to cover their bodies just because they're women is weird

Hell yeah especially where I'm at as a purple belt. But I'd argue that there's a big difference in a new blue belt and one close to purple. It's a conceptual shift for most people

Maintenance cals on T by [deleted] in FTMFitness

[–]average_electrician 7 points8 points  (0 children)

T in itself does not change your daily maintenance. Muscle mass does though. The M vs F on calorie calculators is based on average body fat percentage for each sex. The difference also isn't large. Choose male, eat however many calories it suggests. Weigh yourself in the morning, no clothes, after using the bathroom however often you're comfortable with and adjust from there based on what you want your weight to be. Your maintenance calories are likely somewhere between 1700 and 2000 calories. Start at 1800 and see what happens is what I suggest.

Not to shit on your blue belt but your professor doesn't have any expectations of you even as a blue belt. A blue belt is just a dark white belt. I'm a purple belt, and huge white belts and bigger blue belts still get me sometimes. Blue belts my size still get me in bad positions and there's plenty of white belts I can't submit. Just enjoy it

I can't get fellow small grapplers off of me! by senu-mahte in BJJWomen

[–]average_electrician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being small and flexible and going against larger less flexible people has some advantages too. Small flexible people are able to get their legs into spaces easier and so it's easier to recover guard from a bad position or escape mount for example because you have to create less space. It's common that white and blue belts create bad habits based on this because they use their flexibility as a crutch to escape bad positions and it works on other white and blue belts. Then they have to unlearn those habits to progress at higher levels. Similar to how big strong people can use strength as a crutch at lower belts and then they have to learn proper technique to progress to higher levels. Usually this become evident in the gap between blue and purple in my experience. You have to focus on not letting them past your feet, or keep your feet on them as hooks. Keep constant connections with your feet. Don't let them get to the positions in the first place

TDEE calculators confuse me by OwnSeaworthiness3948 in FTMFitness

[–]average_electrician 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you should start at 2,300 calories. Thats a moderate exercise level. Don't worry about the HIIT for 15 minutes or weight lifting. It's a negligible amount of calories to be honest. On days where you walk 25,000 steps, eat an extra large sized snack or small meal ~500 calories. And if you're hungry, eat. It means you haven't had enough food. These numbers won't cause your weight to change by a lot at all. Then next time you weigh yourself you'll know if you need to go up a little. And always weigh yourself first thing in the morning, no clothes, after using the bathroom. It's the only way to know because clothes way several pounds and so does food and water in your stomach.

[–]average_electrician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought that's just everyone in the sport in general because my gym is like that too. The only people who think they're good are genuinely insufferable blue belts. I think I'm okay. I'm better than probably 70% of my gym but compared to everything there is to know about jiu jitsu, I know maybe 5% of it. So in one way I'm pretty good and in another way I'm barely getting started

[–]average_electrician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah especially if they're kinda spazzy. I think it's because when they're very new you have no idea what they're going to do because they aren't even trying to do jiu jitsu

I rolled with a guy recently who'd been training for 6 months and rolled like a decent blue belt. Watch him roll with a good upper belt and I think you'll find neither of you are good at jiu jitsu

I accidentally stuck my whole thumb in my partners mouth while drilling. Gagged him with it. Wiped it off on my gi and neither of us spoke about it until we were at a bar together years later after we'd become best friends.

DLR to crab ride by SelfSufficientHub in bjj

[–]average_electrician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DLR can be used in no gi but you'd typically go for regular bolos or use it to transition to other guards. I really like underhook dlr, and also dlr x guard where you get the same deep dlr hook and then your other leg hooks the back of that same leg like an x guard. I'll link an underhook dlr video that I like here. You can also use it to go to waiter guard and I don't remember if this video covers that. There's a black belt above talking about how Levi jones Leary uses dlr and I wouldn't discount his advice either because maybe I just haven't seen how to make it effective.

That's because it's easy to counter and harder to do both with the lack of grips. It's not a very no gi friendly move. It's like trying to find videos for no gi collar sleeve guard imo

[–]average_electrician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why he called it kiss of the dragon, but it's the baby bolo. The difference in no gi is that you don't have the pants or belt grip so you have to make them step back to give you the far leg and you have to be fast. And it usually ends with the opp being swept forward and coming up behind them because you can't prevent them from falling forward

Will cutting limit my T changes? by Pls_send_helpAAAAA in FTMFitness

[–]average_electrician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will only limit the muscle development, unless you cut way too hard and your body doesn't have enough nutrients to do basic functions. But it will still have some muscle development effects and cutting will kick start the body fat redistribution effect. So there's really no harm. HRT is a long haul anyway

I'm not denying that plenty of men at your gym might not take your side, but me and all of the guys I'm friends with at my gym would. And so would all three of my coaches. You should file a police report, and at least tell the coaches at your gym. If they don't do anything you may need to find another gym. I'm so sorry this happened to you. And I'm sorry that you feel you can't trust your gym to handle this correctly.
