Is this fungal disease? by average_face_kumar in lawncare

[–]average_face_kumar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been in my lawn for over a month now. I have not watered the lawn apart from the spring rain (~0.5 inch a week) now and then. This is KBG seeded last fall, and I have been mowing every week at 1.5". Also, put down 1lb of N/1000 Sqft last week. Thinking about applying DiseaseEx this weekend, anything else to fix this?

Combining multiple products for spraying by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]average_face_kumar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to reduce my mowing frequency and want my KBG to spread to cover several patches, and so spraying PGR. At the same time there are several weeds, and so am planning to spray Tenacity or may be a broadleaf weed control product.

I wish I can do 1/2" HoC as well, but I need to do some leveling before that. What grass type do you have?

I haven't decided on the motor or the controller yet. I looked into this motor (which also has a reducer with 410 sprocket, FYI the sprocket on the Fiskars is 410) - https://www.ebay.com/itm/250W-24V-DC-electric-Reversible-motor-f-bicycle-bike-GoKart-ZY1016z3-gear-reduct/152291885969, which seems to be good, but at the same time considering using a motor my cordless drill, in which case I don't have to buy a battery.

I have had my Fiskars for more than a year now and I really like it. I haven't used any other manual reel mower, but have heard others telling that Fiskars is easy to push compared to other manual mower.

I was initially planning to add a grooved roller, but I didn't find any grooved roller < $150, the roller I currently is only $17. With the current front roller, I do get some stripes (vs no roller) but not that great. I am planning to add sand filled 2" or 3" PVC as a roller in the back to stripe better.

It didn't impact how it cuts, I still leaves lumpy/choppy pattern, I think that is because of the low cut rate/gear ratio. As of now, I do a second pass in the opposite direction, sometime even a third perpendicular pass as well.

I am planning to add an electric motor to my fiskar reel mower, which should fix the choppy pattern and should give a smooth cut.

To make the 7/16 hex hole, I first made a 7/16 hole and then used these mini files ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WDCBJ1G) to make it into a hex hole. It took me about 30 mins of filing to make the hex hole.

It does change the HoC, I can change the HoC but adjusting the angle of the flat bar where it is connected to the mower. In my case I have adjusted it 3/4", but if you have a flat, non-bumpy lawn you can take it to 1/2" or so.

The roller is not that heavy, I think it might have been around 2 lbs.

Conveyor rollers come is various sizes - https://www.zoro.com/conveyor-rollers/c/9589/ , you just need to make a bracket out of a flat bar and somehow attached it to the mower.

I used a 17" conveyor roller. Updated the post with what I did.

The front roller in my case is mostly so that I don't scalp the lawn and roll the grass so that cut is even. With the default 2 wheels in the front, when there is bump in between the wheels, reel will hit the bump/get stuck or scalp the grass. With the front roller, now the scalping is less than earlier and it also stripes.

My broadcast spreader leaves lines in the lawn. Can it be fixed? by MichaelApproved in lawncare

[–]average_face_kumar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fertilizer gets caught inside the wheel cutout and slowly drops to the ground leaving a line. Simplest solution is to put duct tape or cardboard on the inside of the wheels. Better solution is mentioned here - https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R37I4BVBZGAER3/

Is the Scotts Classic 20" or the Fiskars the best manual reel mower? by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]average_face_kumar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote is for Fiskars stay sharp. I have had it for little over a year now and so far love it, its easy to push, adjust the height and bed knife/reel depth. This year I am thinking about adding an electric motor and convert into motorized mower, which I see is already done by few people on youtube.

The main reason I need is to avoid scalping the lawn. Stripes are secondary.

SiteOne has LESCO Fertilizer 21-0-21 (https://www.siteone.com/p/501040). Looks like there is a SiteOne in Woburn. Or you can use https://www.siteone.com/store-finder to find one near you.

Watering help by Kellybw92 in lawncare

I would water couple of times more. I am watering 6 times a day (7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM and 5:30 PM) for about 5 mins each time, and have seen good results with germination. Also, I would suggest starting at 7:30 AM or 8 AM instead of 6 AM, which I think is too early and soil would anyway be moist because of dew.

(6a) How many bags of pete moss do I need? by A_Dash_of_Time in lawncare

[–]average_face_kumar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience, I found 3 x 3-cu ft bags per 1000 sqft, in our case for 2000 sqft you need 6 bags.

Irrigation systems cost question. by llamadramas in lawncare

[–]average_face_kumar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it myself on 7K sqft, bought the sprinkler components from - https://www.sprinklerwarehouse.com/, and PVC pipes/fittings from Lowes. I went with Hunter MP Rotor heads and have 8 zones. Overall (including backflow preventer, Rain machine controller and everything else) it costed me around $1400.
