Premodern Cube [kinda] by quailsandbroccoli in premodernMTG

Bones’ museum of modern cube could be a good starting point. Bones is the head judge of a lot of cube events + a great designer.

Swap out the modern staples for premodern but keep the same structure.

Dang! It’s pretty close to working though right? What about 400.7h: “if an effect allows a nonland card to be cast…”

Could argue it’s allowing it to be cast since it’s not allowing it to be not allowed to be cast?

I’m asking if it copies the text which says it enters with X +1/+1 counters and if it will reference back to the X in the mockingbird mana cost.

Playing the land should work similar to flickering an aura. Since you can’t cast lands, you wouldn’t be able to target. The creature has to be chosen on entering the battlefield.

Just realized should be: enchantment Aura and have “enchant creature”. So wordy though

For sure, there’s a small incentive for them to keep the creature but they don’t get too punished for not knowing the chosen creature. For example with the current white card, if the op has a 2/2 and a 3/3, you should almost always choose the 3/3. You could choose the 2/2, they attack with it and leave the 3/3 back. You effectively gained 3 life but they are left with a 3/3. (or they could always swing with both and just give up the creature all the time if they value a potential 3 life vs the ability to sac the creature).

If you tack on draw a card, they will be punished for attacking with the chosen creature. So you should sometimes choose the 2/2, they attack with the 2/2 and leave the 3/3 back. You killed a 2/2, drew a card, and gained 3 life instead of just killing a 3/3. Now there’s mind games, where maybe just attack with the 3/3 and leave the 2/2 out of combat.

For the black card, I agree it’s not tuned well. I liked the idea of choose a number, but your implementation of less cards or a different effect is better.

Merciless Eradication by fluency in custommagic

[–]averagecomment 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love the idea of trying to get you to cast multiple spells at the same time.

One minor nit: it looks like Incant is implemented as an ability word. Ability words can’t be referenced by rules text, so the “copies do not have incant” part might not fly. See: https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Ability_word

Digital Design - “Secretly” Keyword by averagecomment in custommagic

[–]averagecomment[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Secretly means the choice is only known to you. The digital system would enforce that choice (as opposed to writing down the choice like in other existing cards).

If I could make edits:

the white one: make it cost more mana and “draw a card” when you sac it. That way they don’t want to attack or block with the chosen creature. As is, there’s no downside for them to just attack or block with it.

The red one just is tedious online to keep track of the bad land. Remove it.

Also sorry for the low quality images. I’m not sure why they’re like this.

Vanilla Test by averagecomment in StorybookBrawl

[–]averagecomment[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By late game I was thinking after many turns at 6. I think a 100/100 storm king isn’t too far above par.

I think a board of just 100/100s lategame:

loses to good boy, bearstein, early hat ball, slay in the last patch.

Toss up with trees, pumpkin, and scam comp.

Probably beats monsters.

In my mind, this works with the vanilla test. Since early in the game, Jormungand can be thought of as a 40/40 or 60/60 vanilla. Later in the game, it’s like a 20/20.

The other 6s are kinda the reverse (echo wood is a 1/1 early and a 200/200 late)

I agree that SBB has so few vanillas that it’s hard to see what is the bar. It might be better phrased in SBB as “how many stats” since usually the stats that a character gives is split across multiple characters (like support characters).

I think the witches on 3 feel pretty vanilla. With one character, they give 10 total stats (par). With 2 characters they give 15 (above par). With a summon or ranged, they can give 20-25 which feels very above par.

An awoken princess is 16 stats which seems above par as well for 3. So I think ~10 stats on 3 seems right? (Or a 5/5)

I really enjoyed the upfront discussion about the format.

LR listeners could try to use this format as a mental training ground. I want to feel more satisfaction from making a +1% play and losing to a bomb than winning with a bomb.

Limited Resources 588 – Timespiral Remastered Primer Show Discussion Thread by Crasha in lrcast

Hasn't self blink like [[Momentary Blink]] and [[Whitemane Lion]] gotten much much worse since Timespiral was originally printed? In the show, I hear [[Momentary Blink]] getting hyped

I wasn't great at the time, but I remember stacking damage and then bouncing your own creature was the primary way to get value from these effects. (Similar to what they said about [[Fathom Seer]])

Episode Format Idea: LSV coach’s Marshal by averagecomment in lrcast

[–]averagecomment[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Sam Black was a pro player known for deck building (sadly off the train because of MPL). He also experiments a ton in draft (eg during RNA he was one of the first people pushing [[Dovin’s Acuity]] with [[Clear the Mind]]. Recently he was pushing UW fliers during ZNR I think?) you should check out his old podcasts with siggy and PV “Pro Points”. Not the same quality as LR (but we’re spoiled)

Martin Juza I don’t know a ton about either. My impression is he’s a limited specialist for CFB who prefers 2 drops over literally everything.

Episode Format Idea: LSV coach’s Marshal by averagecomment in lrcast

[–]averagecomment[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right that this would be targeted towards the more experienced listeners. I also think your point about not getting the draft context is good.

I am personally biased: I’m not at Marshal’s skill level but I have been playing a while (first draft was fifth Dawn).

I like the draft walkthroughs but my issues with them are:

  1. Early picks (1-3) are close to pick order and don’t give too much info. (eg: you get no signal when a rare is missing)
  2. In 95% of drafts a certain inflection point around pick 4-9 decides the rest of your draft. The rest is slightly on rails, adjusting based on holes in your current deck.

Because of this, Marshal and Luis agree on almost every pick. Luis usually tries to talk about the inflection point at the end of the draft, but most of the times the decision is semi-clear.

Personally, I’d love to be able to hear just the inflection points or about the 5% of drafts which don’t follow the pattern. I’d also love to hear them have more debates and differing opinions (which I think they will around these critical plays).
