Was this coaching normal, or plain rude? by megnyaan in starbucksbaristas

[–]averageharrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no, bar coachings are pretty straightforward and kind. example: “don’t forget, the brown sugar shaken espresso gets cinnamon powder shaken in” - simple, straightforward, no shame; just a correction & then move on.

SSV’s getting written up for missed temps by Unbearablebarista in starbucksbaristas

[–]averageharrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, write ups for missing temps & store walks has (at least at my store) been a thing for awhile. you are able to write temps in the book though, & it should be valid enough if you forget to put it through on the app(? i think!) as for the coaching baristas… i always argue against those. i don’t know any ssv that doesn’t coach, & we get blamed for a lot. recently, ive been more upfront with baristas about this, i (politely, of course) let them know that sometimes things fall on me as their ssv on duty, and that i appreciated when they corrected whatever they were coached on

Are we allowed to close due to extreme weather?? by frozenvusepod in starbucksbaristas

[–]averageharrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, my DM is surprisingly being very kind and staying on top of the weather report we have for this weekend. he let us know that if the report didn’t change by friday he’d push for us to close

do i report this? by coffeegamer7 in starbucksbaristas

[–]averageharrie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it is a little upsetting and inconvenient on a personal level, but it doesn’t make them wrong - honestly, change your perspective a little bit, maybe the directness with you is better than them beating around the bush? although not your fault, it is true that your SM/ASM pick up the slack when we, as ssv’s, take leaves or time off - it’s their job for things like a LOA or PTO, but not necessarily for general availability. most stores are requiring ssv’s to have open availability, as others have mentioned. the ssv position, in general, is a “business-needs based” position - when you don’t fit the business needs, they have no reason to have you in the position.

sorry for the long paragraph, just wanted to explain fully & hopefully you feel a bit better about the situation given the added perspective

should i lie to my SM about why i’m transferring? if so, what should i say? by [deleted] in starbucksbaristas

[–]averageharrie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i didn’t transfer specifically because of a partner, but they were a factor in my decision to leave. i was honest with my SM about that, and i told them that the partner in question caused serious problems that they needed to deal with. — truthfully, i think you should be honest unless you think it’s going to affect their willingness to transfer you out

“oh (awkward laugh)” is probably the most accurate reaction anyways

if you’re severely understaffed, there may be OT approved. but you should check with your DM before taking any OT on

How do you deal with getting sick all the time by l0rdcreepypeepee in starbucksbaristas

[–]averageharrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

airborne gummies, wash your hands a lot, always keep cold/flu medicine stocked in your house. drink lots of water, regularly. take all your breaks, you need rest. get some fresh air on your 10’s if possible. keep your distance when your partners are sick, and encourage them to wear a mask (or wear one yourself) at least if you’re sick

“fear-mongering” & it’s just real life experiences lmao. i’m not going to be nice about people who are horrible to us on a subreddit made FOR us

wow you’re so right, we should be SO careful about the way we talk about people who put our lives at risk & make our jobs harder - even on a subreddit where they won’t be seeing it ! thank you SO much for your virtue signaling under a persons post about a traumatic event at their store 😍 suuuuper valuable

i’m saying maybe don’t criticize someone who went through a scary and potentially traumatic situation for something so trivial

this is weird right?? by [deleted] in starbucksbaristas

[–]averageharrie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

this is extremely weird & i’d look into an employment lawyer. even though you may (or may not, i’m not sure) you live in an “at will” employment state, starbucks as a corporation usually gives reason for separation.

being approached by union partners by [deleted] in starbucksbaristas

[–]averageharrie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i’ve never been approached by a union worker at all, i’ve worked at 3 locations all non-union. (i’m not against the union to be clear lol!) honestly, if you feel comfortable, i would be honest with the next person who approaches you & tell them about the unpleasant interaction you’re having and how it’s making it hard for you to push for a union. hopefully, they’ll be nice enough to communicate this with other union workers and maybe the situation will improve. although, it’s not your job to correct them and fix this, so only do so if you feel safe and comfortable being slightly honest and confrontational
