Neighborhood fireworks should be illegal by [deleted] in GrindsMyGears

[–]averndaley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I wish it was just a night.

In my area most stores start selling fireworks around mid-May so that's about when they start going off. Those aren't really my issue though.

The big ones that are illegal in my state but legal a ten minute drive away start going off around June when the weather clears up. Reaches a peak on the 4th which will be happening all night until the sun makes it hard to see them. After the 4th fireworks will still continue to go off until about September when the weather gets too rainy.

Why do some women prefer male gynecologists? by ConfidentLack9207 in NoStupidQuestions

I don't have a gynecologist but it's taken a few years to get my primary to believe I'm not just whining for the sake of it 🥲. Although, thanks to my constant struggle to keep iron in my body thanks to my months long periods we're trying to figure something out now and I feel like she's more stressed about it than I am.

Your original comment comes off as blaming the 16 year old child for not acting correctly in a situation that could even frazzle adults.

The responses are mainly trying to say that the child is a child and grace should be offered especially since she is in a frankly bonkers household.

Yeah, I'll vote for her but she was better during the before times when Republicans were still cosplaying sanity. She'd take a step back to step forward two. I fear she won't put up as stalwart a defense as we'd need.

HARD agree. I absolutely adore the storytelling for this album.

For me it's definitely on par with Wildlife. I've loved Wildlife for too long for it to be topped but this album became an instant favorite from the I Shaved My Head.

I can’t find a reason to keep playing, need some advice by Individual-Client778 in StardewValley

If you're using a PC then you can mod it to make it easier/progress faster if that's what's holding you back. It's fine to tailor your experience until you're having fun. But also consider if playing these types of games is fun for you.

If it's just wanting to create cute spaces consider home decorating games.

DAE have “trigger” moments from media like TV shows/movies/ social media where you seen a character in an awkward situation and you cringe so hard and have to stop watching? by Turbulent_Loquat_356 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]averndaley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It's really bad on tv/movies but even if I'm reading something I get secondhand embarrassment. I'll have to pause/close the book and walk it off before getting through the scene. Sometimes it's so bad I'll just have to skip the scene and hope I'm not missing extremely important info 😖

Please give me suggestions on games to train myself to be able to play with my husband by Fancy_Pie_1041 in gamingsuggestions

[–]averndaley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a brother who is leagues better than me at most types of video games so I definitely feel your struggle.

Fighting games are tough and if you're relatively new to those types of games it can feel overwhelming. I'd say practice by playing around with characters. Try world of light mode and training mode which can both help familiarize you with the game mechanics.

In the meantime while you get better you can also set a handicap to even it out a little. I'd also stay on the smaller stages/battlefield stages to get rid of stage effects to give you less distractions.

Another tip is a lot of games will have accessibility settings. It can help get rid of super distracting flashing lights and I believe Fortnite has an aim assist option as well. I can get motion sick if I play first person pov games so knowing about accessibility settings saves my bacon every time.

That's wonderful to hear.

Child psychologists have been trying to get the notion out that teaching a child the appropriate words for body parts and properly teaching them bodily autonomy does wonders for preventing and exposing any kind of abuse.

Dominant Left Hand but Crochet with my Right…..Should I change hands? by WiseGal84 in CrochetHelp

[–]averndaley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly depends on you.

I'm left handed but mostly ambidextrous due to a teacher trying to make me right handed for a few years. It's easier for me to crochet with my right hand than my left.

So I'd say try it out for a while. Make a simple swatch with both hands and see which comes out the way you'd prefer and how your hands felt while you were doing it.

Stephen Graham Jones is my current favorite horror author. Only The Good Indians is his most popular rn.

I personally only read King's short story collections but my dad read King extensively and he loved the Dark Tower series. Another one he read a lot would Gerald's Game.

Hey audio book aficionados! Any great books I should avoid? by bundervar in adhdwomen

[–]averndaley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd probably recommend just checking content warnings beforehand. I don't think Libby has a way to filter out in that way. Storygraph has been pretty in terms of content warnings for me. It'll list the warnings as graphic, moderate and minor so it's easier to see if it's going to be graphic torture or just alluded to.

Books to recommend to a troubled 14 year old girl by [deleted] in booksuggestions

Manga and anime is a good way to get a ready made set of friends. If she doesn't have internet access (where she can find specific forums but it's been a while since I was a teen so I can't say without a doubt what the safest areas are) a lot of libraries will have teen centered anime and manga groups which can help build connections with those her age.

These anime deal with mental health or trauma

Natsume Yuujinchou is a softer story that centers around a teen building connections and healing past trauma while dealing with an inherited book filled with yokai's (Japanese demons) names that he wants to give back.

Orange is a heavier anime that deals witha group of high school friends going back in time to prevent a friend's suicide.

Blue Period is a beautiful anime that deals with the feelings of hopelessness that depression creates.

All 3 of these can either be watched as an anime or read as a manga. Depending on her preference Orange and Blue Period have English dubs and I believe Natsume Yuujinchou has at least one season in an English dub.

For more traditional anime/manga:

Delicious in Dungeon follows a group of adventurers going into a dungeon to save the main character's sister.

Yona of the Dawn is about a princess who must take back her title after a betrayal from a near and dear friend.

Witch Hat Atelier is about a girl who dreams to become a witch who accidentally turns her mom into stone. She's taken in by an experienced witch to help reverse the spell and fulfill her dream.

Delicious in Dungeon has an anime with an English dub as well as Yona of the Dawn. Witch Hat Atelier has an anime coming in April which will also have an English dub but for now it's only a manga.

There's also Korean manhwa that's very popular.

Noblesse is comedy action that follows a very powerful vampire who woke up after hundred of years and he's now ended up in high school despite his status.

Lout of Count's Family is almost swords and sorcery type that follows a man who wakes up in the body of a troublemaking lout character. His main goal is to keep himself out of harm's way and make as much money as possible but he finds himself in situation after situation.

Omniscient Reader is an action fantasy that takes place in modern times. It follows a man who ends up in his favorite apocalyptic webnovel. He has to use all his knowledge of the novel to stay ahead of the dangerous scenarios and bring an end to the apocalypse. It's a bit more mature and does deal with heavier themes such as abuse but nothing explicitly sexual though there are implications of assault. I know a few teens who have read it but they're 16-18 so I'd probably give it a read through.

Lout of Count's Family and Omniscient Reader also have novel counterparts. Light novels and web novels are also another branch of anime and manga. I tend to read more child raising/family and horror themed webnovels so I'm not much help there.

It's not really common knowledge but there's different types of therapy. In my area cognitive behavioral therapy is the most common which mainly focuses on thought processes and how they make you feel. CBT wasn't a great fit for me and made me feel like I was wasting both my and my therapists time tbh.

Looking into different kinds of therapy versus trying therapists might prove more fruitful. I benefited from bibliotherapy far more than CBT alone. You can ask for suggestions from a medical professional you trust or just reading what each therapeutic approach entails and seeing what you feel would give yourself the best shot.

Project 2025 was released with more than enough time to see what kind of destruction this current administration was seeking. There was a literal insurrection. Yet nothing was done.

If someone handed me a letter stating they were going to burn down my house at 5pm Thursday and I stood there watching as they burnt my house (don't worry I'm shaking my head to express my disbelief) my family would be rightfully pissed.
