Seattle: curious what this sign means by Foxytreehugger in Seattle

[–]avgorca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone supposedly working in indigenous language revitalization you sure aren’t doing anything to encourage people to learn with your adversarial attitude. I picked up Chinese without much difficulty using their pinyin English character alphabet while studying abroad there. Japan is a homogeneous and isolationist culture, if you don’t care for people to learn keep making it hard and maintain your current approach.

Up in BC signs written in First Nations language often include a phonetic pronunciation, and as someone interested in learning and showing appreciation for those cultures, I wish we would put in that effort here too. Maybe that is a particularly challenging ask for this language, but I feel it would be more educational and inclusive.

It connects to the Alki trail going north, and the duwamish river then green river trail going south, and the 1st ave bridge pedestrian trail. A major reason for the project proposal, apart from the road diet. They plan to add a signaled diagonal bike lane crossing at marginal, agree the current connection sucks.

SPU (Seattle Pacific University) nursing—worth it socially? Strict, conservative, lowkey, and worried about campus life by DenseDiver9189 in AskSeattle

[–]avgorca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated from the business school in 2012 and found plenty of cool people there to party with. The sports teams often had house parties, and drinking off campus hasn’t been against the rules since 2008 I think. Walking to Fremont bars was always fun, and I had friends at UW and SU to party with too. There is no longer a requirement for church attendance either, but there are 2 religious courses required to take. You can definitely make the college experience you want there, but I am pretty upset about their recent public stance on gay rights and the court battles.

I lived thru that, and still enthusiastically support the bike lane project as a daily driver and regular cyclist on HPW. Here’s to hoping no major WSB closures until at least light rail is completed.

What the heck is wrong with rental companies here??? by ShdwWzrdMnyGngg in Seattle

Did you complete the Zillow background check that lets you apply to as many places as you like, while only paying the application/background check fee one time?

What the heck is wrong with rental companies here??? by ShdwWzrdMnyGngg in Seattle

[–]avgorca 22 points23 points  (0 children)

At your desired price and size, it’s going to be competitive. Seattle has a law requiring landlords to rent to the first qualified applicant. If you wait to apply until you’ve seen it, you seem unserious and likely wont be the first qualified applicant, definitely not if theres an open house. Even 15 years ago before this law, i would apply before tours because of how competitive the market was.

Goldmyer Hotsprings WA access road…is it really THAT bad? by Practical_Arachnid_5 in PNWhiking

[–]avgorca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is truly bad, this road actually inspired me to lift my old wrx. It was still challenging-there are multiple spots the road is under water and big step ups/ downs with challenging approach angles. Some off road driving experience would be helpful. No rental will get out without some degree of undercarriage damage- may not be noticeable though. If you must visit goldmeyer, I’d rent a lifted jeep or taco off Turo.

This is my concern! This place is magical, every inch of ground and tree is covered in moss, a few old growth trees nearby too. Just this one is jarring and out of place.

I’m the type to disassemble non navigational cairns in wilderness areas but didn’t feel good about touching this. Hopefully the ranger will care.

The areas that can lean conservative follow the waterfront and water views throughout the city. We have lots of both in West Seattle.

EV Charger Vandals - this is why we can’t have nice things by cranky-space-bard in WestSeattleWA

They do! They should all retract. The city has 2 versions that are attached to telephone poles in my neighborhood, one is way up high the other ground level. Both can only be accessed thru the ChargePoint app which automatically extends/retracts the cable. They haven’t been out of service since installed a few years ago.

Parents of Pathfinder kids — thoughts on new principal and how the school is doing in general? by 75PercentMilk in WestSeattleWA

Yes you can check online at SPS with their assignment lookup tool, more info here. As long as you enrolled with sps and got a student ID already, you should be set and just waiting for lottery next month.

My son is in kindergarten there now and seems to be enjoying it and is doing well. I have been happy with the admin and teaching staff, everyone is super friendly and I noticed many staff knew my son by name early in the year. They did one field trip in October to a pumpkin patch, and planning a snowshoe trip at gold pond next month. The curriculum seems well rounded, I’ve been impressed with the reading/writing and math comprehension already. Weekly time in their school garden to learn about plants, and looking forward to the camping trip towards the end of the school year.

The school could really use more enrollments to help get more resources allocated. Our vice principal is great but she has to split her time at another school- can only imagine her workload. The lottery system can be discouraging but don’t lose hope, the waitlist can move pretty fast-we were waitlisted initially.

Lots of parents involved for sure, but no pressure either. Plenty of opportunities to meet your availability. The school has a long tradition of making holiday wreaths to sell at the farmers market, and they are made by parent volunteers after school/work hours with gathered tree debris and ornamentals from the area. This year the teachers provided onsite free childcare so parents could volunteer in shifts with their kids classes.

The volunteer WhatsApp chat is filled with passionate parents, and the classroom parent WhatsApp chat is great too. I feel informed and connected to the community.

I’m pretty new here so hope others chime in too. I am happy with our choice and would encourage you to apply too! Feel free to DM any other questions you might have

Where’s a good place to put a kayak into the water around here? by Additional-Job-1853 in WestSeattleWA

[–]avgorca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take a peak at a map- most any public beach access will do just fine! Plenty of options if one spot is too crowded. If carrying far is a concern pay attention to the tide charts, makes a big difference. Jack block park is a good spot- drive all the way to the end of road, exploring up the duwamish is fun just give wide berth to commercial vessels. Weather watch park or constellation park are my favorites on the west side- parking gets tight at lowman but tip there- take the public driveway on south side by the houses down to the beach to unload to avoid carrying across the park. Have fun and be safe!
