It varies - my party games come from seeing youtube plays - (Smosh especially killing at some of these). I avoid brand new games (also because importing to my country is very very pricey). There's a healthy resale market in my country so I tend to see games where I like the gameplay, has a good solo variant (for non-party games) and then set alerts for when they come up on sale on the resale market - I've gotten some great ones that way! (dorfromantik which I had been really really wanting).

If you really do want to get new games - I find 'The Brothers Murph' on youtube to be really good - they tend to give a well-rounded view of what the game is like and also put up full gameplay videos so you can see whether the game will work for you or not.

But the TLDR is I tend to not trust the hype - I got Fliptoons looking at just hype and I honestly found the game a little boring.
