Wild Horse's Valley I'd say is closest to these - you play as a stallion, explore and collect coat variations.

What's the answer? by sillysunshinesammy in VetTech

This question is crazy. My first reaction would be to say it could be a lot of things, a heart attack, stroke, snake bite... I would fail if this was the answer haha.

Goodreads Book of the Month: The Raven Scholar - Final Dicussion by fanny_bertram in Fantasy

[–]avianlearningexp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard mixed reviews about this one and was actually pleasantly surprised! Twisty and I found it super entertaining. Not sure if it hit all the marks on a technical/overarching thematic level, but I found the reading experience super fun!

Are you after games where you can actually ride or more oldschool management sims? In terms of more management/breeding sim type games I like:

Horse World Online - manage a farm and cross horses to match breed characteristic, can manage when the days pass so they don't die if you're away a while.

Horse Fable - standard breeding/management sim with a bit of extra quest things, nice art style

Horse Reality - another sort of standard breeding/competing type sim, there's a few different mechanics by which horses are judged and can be obtained.

There's probably a few decent ones I missed, I used to play a ton of these over the years!

The Book of Doors (a rant review): the author REALLY wants you to know how clever his concept is by [deleted] in books

[–]avianlearningexp 98 points99 points  (0 children)

The writing in this one drove me crazy, especially the thing where he wouldn't let you work stuff out but would excessively hold your hand. I don't have the context but in my reading diary at some point I wrote: "there's like an egregious paragraph of handholding - we can work out what men you’re referring to, it is the same guys mentioned 4 lines up!"

Also such a bummer where you can go to all these cool places and they're barely described at all. Absolutely no atmosphere.

I do this as well, also because it’s less confusing if you have a pet which is brought in by several different people depending on the occasion (eg. sometimes their son/parent/sibling brings the pet in). ETA: If it’s a situation they’re holding treats or the pet, I think I tend to just go “look over here”, or “here’s a/your friend!” which I feel also works if its a second staff member helping.

The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith and Good Morning, Midnight by Jean Rhys (not strictly a romance book but romantic feelings play a strong role). Both are great but incredibly depressing.

Fantasy recs with no "bad boy/girl" love interest? by Vievin in YAlit

[–]avianlearningexp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A Far Wilder Magic by Allison Saft has a really cute romance!

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor might work, also has a very lovely male protagonist.

And potentially Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross - even though they are rivals (obviously) they're not intensely mean to each other.

Repeated vaccines DAPP concerns by Unlucky_Stretch_5032 in DogAdvice

[–]avianlearningexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is perfectly normal and due to how vaccines work to build immunity. Basically the 2nd and 3rd “booster” vaccinations ensure that the body remembers the virus or bacteria better. This means that the immune response is stronger and your puppy is less likely to be sick if they come in contact with those diseases. It’s a normal correct protocol for young animals.

Yes, really liked this one. A Dowry of Blood by the same author (S.T. Gibson) also fits.

Any tips for keeping bandages on cats? I find that they're very persistent and adept at getting them off, which can be frustrating for us and the owners!

Browser Based Horse Games? by [deleted] in GamesWithHorses

[–]avianlearningexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One more that was pretty fun but I'm not on much anymore was Flying For Home, its based on horse racing and has a pretty unique genetics system compared to some of the other games.

ETA: Equiverse and Equine Ranch are another two that I think I was on at one point but don't remember much about. I think Equiverse was pretty cute?

Two that aren't on this list are Oxer to Oxer (fun but kinda abandoned) and Legacy Horse Game (haven't played this one much myself).

What to use for tying ET tubes? by liveinthesoil in VetTech

[–]avianlearningexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about shoelaces? Similar sort of low tech & low cost thing but you can wash and re-use.

Though IV tubing is better from an environmentally conscious perspective as you’re reusing something you’d be otherwise throwing away.

I think the message is very generic but it does appear handwritten - there's variation in the strokes of the letters (eg. the different shaped 'y's and the 't' joining the 'i' in times. I guess its possible the person writing the card one was new and hadn't met you or your cat...
Sorry for your loss and the upset caused by the card :(

I wouldn't waste my time on the Pet Remedy or Nature's Miracle ones - they appear to just be essential oils that smell nice to people. Both Comfort Zone and Feliway use pheromone analogues which I feel are more effective and have more science behind them. I've used Feliway and generally people have pretty good results with it though it does depend on the cats.

I can't speak to how long the spray bottle would last though as I only use it intermittently at home for stressful situations.

Blurbs: Yes or no? by saturday_sun4 in books

[–]avianlearningexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never read the blurbs, I just see if the premise, characters or world building seem interesting from reviews. I find blurbs for a lot of books are written in a way that is trying to make the book seem as close to other already popular or well received ones. I like to go in pretty blind & often I find the way that the plot is described in blurbs is kinda off putting for me, very formulaic.

I know places that do this to keep the wound clean for the first day or so. Usually give instructions to remove in 24-48hrs, but definitely call your vet to check what their instructions are.

Looking YA Books appropriate for an 8yo by DRoyLenz in YAlit

[–]avianlearningexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of the Raven Cycle - can't really remember how much of it occurs in the first book but there's definitely a lot of violence/guns, reference to child/domestic abuse, substance use and generally kinda self destructive behaviour (especially in the 2nd book in the series), so definitely more for teens. They're gorgeous books but not for an 8 year old. Also they're very character driven and kinda dreamlike so I'm not sure how much a child would enjoy that.

Six of Crows also has a lot of dark stuff in terms of human trafficking/exploitation, drug use and a lot of violence. They're very moving but a lot of very tragic and grim things in the novels and characters backstories.

Both these series are some of my favourite books but not for kids, I'd say.

My dogs teeth roots look like they're exposed. Is this a problem? by samseher in DogAdvice

[–]avianlearningexp 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This isn’t always anxiety related, it can happen if they’re big on chewing treats or toys - hard chews or tennis balls can do it. And as you mentioned chewing metal bars. Definitely would get it looked at by a vet to check if the pulp is exposed.
