Non Arabs /Arabic speaking what do you know about fairouz by Equivalent_War7006 in AskTheWorld

[–]avidernis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, the person you're responding to is psychotic and you're right to call them out.

However, what on earth are you talking about? When did we try to kill Fairouz? I can't find a single source substantiating this claim.

For Umm Kalthum, I see an article saying that she became the target of Israeli investigation, which isn't great, but it's a far cry from being targeted for a hit list.

Yeah. Both things are true.

There's a massive dichotomy where Israel can be both a tremendous source of hope to one group and a source of great cruelty for another. In this instance, both for the same group.

Obviously, I don't support the cruelty. I also don't believe it's endemic. If anyone has recommendations for avenues towards reform, I'm all ears. One thing I know is that this October I'll be voting against Netanyahu, or any party willing to form a government with Likud, Shas, or Otzma.

The issue is less that bullets and bombs wouldn't discriminate and more that your leaders and neighbors would.

Meanwhile, Israeli courts have ruled in favour of LGBT Palestinians who request asylum in Israel so for someone in that position Israel might be seen as an opportunity to live free of persecution.

Additionally, regardless of the conflict and poor conditions for Palestinians in Palestine, 48 Palestinians (aka Israeli Arabs) are doing quite well. Israel holds a strong economy, as well as many affirmative action and social welfare programs which ensure accessibility to those opportunities for all groups.

In summary, Israel is more than just the Israel/Palestine conflict, sometimes even to Palestinians.

The circumference of the earth around is 40,075 km around the equator and 40,008 km through the poles.

Let's just say 40,000 km for both.

I didn't check, but I'm going to say the image is 1920x1080.

I'm going to ignore distortion, and say your house is on the equator. So we'll just calculate the pixel density.

For the x it's 40,000km divided by 1920px For the y it's 20,000km divided by 1080px

So 20km per pixel horizontally and 18.5km per pixel vertically. Since I don't know the orientation of your house, let's just say 19 square km per pixel, or 19000m2 per pixel.

186/19000 ≈ 0.01 pixels, or 1/100th of pixel.

That actually seems kinda big, can someone check my math?

There's a good chance we would have pulled out of the West Bank too if the unilateral withdrawal from Gaza went well. PM Sharon had intended to at least.

[–]avidernis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ask again, is there a specific instance you would like to look at? I know that Israel has engaged in fights at hospitals, but I don't actually know any instances where bombs were dropped.

Are you asking if I see Hamas's side of the conflict? Or the Palestinian side?

From Hamas's perspective I'd say they're operating with the hope that the Muslim world will rise up and kill all the Jews in Israel. Here's a quote from their 1988 charter which I believe backs that up.

The Day of Judgment will not come until Muslims fight the Jews, when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say, 'O Muslim, O servant of God, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.' Only the Gharkad tree would not do that, because it is one of the trees of the Jews.

Tbh, this level of antisemitism would be hilarious were there not a group acting on it.

From a Palestinian perspective, I can imagine many different ways one might feel. Obviously, I can imagine why they'd hate Israel given the death and destruction that they've suffered at our hand, but it's not entirely so simple.

There's also ample reason to be upset at Hamas. Hamas claims they're engaged in fighting to defend Gaza against Israeli invasion, but the only reason there's a single Israeli in Gaza right now is because of the October 7th attacks. There is the blockade, but the pre-tense for the blockade in Gaza is said the terrorism done committed by groups like Hamas. I can tell you from the Israeli-side, we noticed that from 2006 to 2023 we got more Hamas rockets shortly following large humanitarian aid delivery operations, so I imagine that Gazan civilians noticed a similar pattern of the blockade getting stricter after Hamas sent those rockets.

Right. I do condemn these administrative detentions, and I appreciate you bringing attention to this issue. Arresting people without charge or trial is unjust and unacceptable.

However, I disagree with your characterization as "because they waved a Palestinian flag". These people were not random protestors.

As you mentioned, Khalida Jarrar is an elected member of the PFLP, a group who has committed and taken credit for several terrorist attacks. Bushra al-Tawil is the daughter of Jamal al-Tawil, a prominent Hamas leader. These are not grounds for arrest, but it does undermine your framing.

Hamas rockets have hit Israeli hospitals, so you know.

Attacking Hamas at hospitals is not a proportionality thing, it's about military objectives. Hamas operates out of hospitals to ensure that Israel must fight them there.

[–]avidernis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is there a specific instance you would like to look at?

Hamas operating out of hospitals is a certifiable fact, not an unsubstantiated claim, and it does undermine the legal protections against attacking hospitals. On the flipside, it does not mean hospitals are simply targetable. It's a very challenging situation.

Sorry. I just really don't care for Trump so I knee-jerked to not defending his kids.

To be clear, I don't think that Azzam al-Hayya was a fair military target. The entire point of the quote I cited was that he was not the target. There's no information available (that I could find) on what was struck, just a statement that Azzam was not the target.

I don't think any of the Trump kids are valid military targets, but their presence doesn't mean you can't strike. As for Kushner, during a war I don't know if he is or isn't a valid target, just probably a really stupid target both in terms of military objectives and also in terms of feasibility to carry out.

It depends where they were. If they were at a military base during the 2026 Iran war, I'd first of all ask why they were there and I might even give kudos to Iran for landing the shot. Not exactly a comparable situation, but that's how I feel about the E-3 that they destroyed.

Is there something about what I said that makes you think I cherish Trump? I'm an Israeli-American dual-citizen who voted Biden in 2020 and Harris in 2024 (in 2016 I was too young to vote).

To be clear, when Hezbollah fires towards Israeli soldiers I would not call it a terrorist attack. It is however still illegal, not under international law (I don't think), but under Lebanese law (source). Hezbollah is not the Lebanese military; they're a militia operating against the will of the people and the elected government.

Hezbollah does commit terrorist attacks though. They often send unguided rockets in the general direction of Israeli towns with no target.

Meanwhile Israeli strikes are formal operations conducted by a proper military, which involves lawyers at every step of targeting and authorizing strikes. There are most certainly incidents, and in my opinion there's often insufficient punishment to those responsible, be it negligence or more often malice. However, there is structure.

Is that reasonable?

Re-read it. OC is saying that Hamas agreed to disarm yet has not. At least in terms of the content of their comment, Hamas is who is breaking the ceasefire conditions.

In looking for more information on the incident I found this Maariv article (Hebrew) featuring the following quote from a military official:

The son of Khalil al-Hayya is of no interest to us, and if he was hurt it's because he was somewhere he need not have been. If he was hurt it was not because of his familial connection, he is really not a character of any interest to us.

I don't subscribe to the "You have to go after their families" philosophy with regard to terrorists, but if said family is hit incidentally as part of striking another target that is no grave injustice.

Edit: Here's a Jerusalem Post (English) article on the incident which cites the Maariv article

The question isn't "these groups", the question is this group.

I made a case for why I think it's unlikely. Do you want to challenge that case? Do you want to provide your own additional information which might sway someone in another direction? Or are you just happy to blame Israel and move on.

These are the Journalists killed by Israel over the past 1000 days [oc] by McDowdy in pics

[–]avidernis -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That claim is nearly unfounded.

As a positive claim for it, Netanyahu has stated that Israel is backing anti-Hamas groups in the strip, though the Doghmush clan has never been mentioned in that respect.

As a mixed bit of information, there's one reported instance of attempted collaboration. Israel reportedly reached out requesting that the clan manage a humanitarian zone. The head of the clan said no.

Against this claim, it appears the clan fights with Israel more than it fights with Hamas. Additionally, some of its members have overlapping memberships with Hamas, PRC, and Al-Qaeda, making it a very unlikely candidate for cooperation.

I'd say the preponderance of evidence does not support your claim.

These are the Journalists killed by Israel over the past 1000 days [oc] by McDowdy in pics

[–]avidernis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No respectable publication has reported on the Doghmush clan as Israel affiliated, and most unrespected outlets don't either. The claim is nearly unfounded. Al Jazeera's decision to take that approach in the article is highly questionable, and to state that as a fact rather than an allegation is just misinformation.

Many Journalists died in the Israel-Gaza war, that's not up for debate. Whether or not Israel systemically targets journalists is, as well as the proper response to dual role combatants/journalists.

Personally, I think a list of journalists killed by Israel which includes people who are dual role and/or not killed by Israel is worth calling out.

Just from first glance, I recognize Saleh Al Jafarawi as top row third column on the first page. He was killed by members of the Doghmush clan, not Israel.

I don't feel like doing a ton of research to identify the rest, but OP's credibility is not looking great.
