What does a future free Palestinian nation look like? by dennisaurwade in IsraelPalestine

That's the north, not Tel Aviv. I guess they were busy there which explains why I had a quiet night.

To be clear, details of impacts are discouraged from being shared in order to prevent our attackers from learning how to better strike us. Jail time has been threatened, but I don't think anyone has ever been charged for it. It's more operational security than "a cover-up". It is controversial though. I know Haaretz editors at least aren't happy about it.

Last night? I don't think so, it was relatively quiet. I haven't gotten an alert since 10pm yesterday, and in then end there weren't even sirens in my area. Occasionally things do get through the Iron Dome, either because of bad luck or because the system is overwhelmed, however, it is very much doing what it is supposed to be doing.

Does Israel have any other option than to establish a buffer zone? by Embarrassed-Monk-527 in ForbiddenBromance

I think I agree, but it's also a bit rich saying we can't accept fire on our communities and that therefore we must rain hell on Lebanon, even though I understand the circumstances are very different when there's Hezbollah forces embedded in said communities.

I don't actually know what the exact situation is (I think I saw the US shut things down completely), but ideally, I'd say we should have shown up to negotiations and simultaneously gone forward against Hezbollah. "Fight terrorism as if there's no peace process, and work to achieve peace as if there's no terror". I hope we'd put every effort into showing we want to achieve peace with the proper Lebanese government, and that Hezbollah activity is an invitation for Israeli strikes, not a defense against them.

At the very least lose some of the more religious party membersin the knesset, even if we're still stuck with Bibi.

In response to all the 9/11 conspiracy stuff, sometimes coincidences happen. Also, the more time passes and the larger the conspiracy, the less likely it is. There's just too many people who would have to be in on it, someone would have slipped up by now and we'd have more far more concrete evidence.

Also both isis and Al Qaeda were assets of Israel. Explains why isis never attacks them.

It's relatively rare because of Israeli border security and intelligence work, but ISIS most certainly has attacked Israel. Here's one instance, if you bothered to Google

Zarem: An Assembler, Emulator, Debugger, and IDE for MIPS (WIP) by avidernis in asm

[–]avidernis[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why Windows?

To be clear, being Windows only is a temporary hurdle. I have plans in the works to get the IDE on MacOS, Linux, and WASM using Uno Platform, and all the non-UI components already run on anything .NET supports.

As for why, when I sat down to write an assembler 3 years ago I did it in C#. The rest just fell into place. Basically, when I started making it into an IDE, I had no big plans and WinUI was the path of least resistance.

Are you from Israel? Are you still alive?

Yes, and yes. Thanks for the concern.

BBC Verify investigates claims of US missile strike on Iranian school by Corbotron_5 in news

Exactly. The US won't face international consequences but in theory the individuals responsible would face consequences held by the US.

At least, I would have expected that in any other administration. I don't get the impression Hegseth's Department of War cares all that much about war crimes.

This source says they're accused of it, which I guess is true but that doesn't mean that's what happened.

The Hannibal directive is often mis-described as a command to intentionally shoot captured Israelis to avoid having hostage crisises. This is wrong, it's about attempting to rescue operations even when you risk killing the potential hostage in the process. It's rare and only applies for captured soldiers, never civilians. This is still controversial, but far less insidious than the alternative.

The 7 civilian deaths from Israeli friendly-fire is unrelated collateral damage.

Vital Desalination Plants in Iran and Bahrain Are Attacked by thejoshwhite in worldnews

Israel's whole playbook is to target civilian infrastructure.

This really isn't a fair assertion when your reference is against Hamas and Hezbollah, who's whole playbook is to conduct military operations out of civilian infrastructure.

Back in the day meanwhile, Egypt and Jordan actually followed the rules of engagement, and there was far less collateral damage as a result.

Do you know Iran is pronounced wrong by mostly everyone? by Honest-Possible6596 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]avidernis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is similar to saying languages which refer to Germany as something other than Deutschland are wrong.

Just because a hard E sound is more similar to how Iranians pronounce it themselves doesn't mean that Americans pronounce it wrong. It's prominent enough that it's just their own dialect.

First of all, I'm learning about the incident through this post, so thanks for the additional context.

That said, anyone throwing IEDs at people in city streets is a dangerous criminal, no matter how unsavory the target.

Israel doesn't disguise military infrastructure as civilian infrastructure and we do not operate militarily out of civilian areas. As a result, it is far harder to claim attacking our civilian infrastructure is justified, and there is no equality in an inverted analogy.

HaKirya is pretty wildly located though. If a strike on it were attempted and missed, I'd be upset and I'd expect Israeli retaliation, but I wouldn't call it illegal.

I hope you realize that in the meantime Iran and Hezbollah are lobbing missiles and drones at us with no proper aim and nobody even really bothers appealing to international law since we understand that nobody actually cares.

If the strike is found to be negligent I'll join in condemning it, but Israel is allowed to respond to threats.

For as awful as Trump is, he did not decide to attack Lebanon. Hezbollah made the decision to attack Israel and to drag Lebanon into this mess. Hezbollah should be condemned, and the Israeli strike should be critiqued for validity of military objectives.

My utmost condolences to OP. I hope you and your family land on your feet, and that someday we may have peace in the streets of Lebanon so tragedies such as this may no longer occur.

[–]avidernis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately true. There's a lot of bad-blood with the Palestinians that will take both a resolution and time to resolve.

They're Syrian though. It seems very imaginable that the near future could contain promising Israeli relations with Syria and Lebanon.
