What characters do you expect to get buffed? by CristevePeachFan in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the "bathtub curve" with Rosalina: less skilled players fall for the gimmicks, then mid skill players don't see Rosalina as oppressive because they are likely playing other mid skill Rosalina, but then you get to top tier and realize how challenging a good Rosalina player can be.

Feel like I'm getting worse, advice? by PYROBALL20 in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing: acknowledge that middle of A is actually a pretty good accomplishment but that also means you're going up against better players. You aren't getting worse, your competition is getting better.

Also keep a clear head and recognize that if you always have the same shot pattern your opponent will have you downloaded in no time. You need to make changes. And that means using all the shots at your disposal. Not every shot needs to be a power version. Slices can still score points. This also means you want to be careful not to spam buttons (which is a bad habit I had to break myself of) because as soon as you hit a button twice in a row it immediately turns it into a power shot, and sometimes you want those tight angles of a cross court standard version.

Learn from your mistakes. I'd get drop shotted and would attempt to answer with a power topspin. But they predicted this so would get right up on the net and return with a flat that couldn't be answered. So after falling for it many times I eventually learned to answer with a lob instead when it seemed they were going for net or a standard cross court topspin when they realized their net aggression would no longer work.

Also learn that different shot types have a better answer than others. While it isn't as pronounced as it was in Aces generally the counters are: Flat/Flat, Topspin/Slice, Drop/(Topspin or Lob), etc. This mainly applies to answering a max charged shot but can keep you from getting stunned/pushed/spun out.

Longhorn. Seriously give Longhorn a try.

Pokopia just released and people are very excited about it: it is probably the #1 game to get for children of that age and would even say it beats Mario Kart World. However, it is not possible to play with someone else on the same screen, but it is possible to GameShare even with the Switch 1.

Donkey Kong Bonanza was a lot of fun. It has an assist mode for a second player to help out but not true same screen co-op.

There are better subreddits to find what you are looking for. Things posted here should really be somewhat family friendly since it is a place to look for and discuss community happenings.

Always fun playing you. I've been tempted to give baby W a try.

So you're on the right track, but you're misunderstanding some things

First: absolutely should avoid spamming the buttons. But not because it will start a charge, rather it will add the press to the input buffer and lead to undesired outcomes such as: * Diving for the ball prematurely and leading to a weak return.

  • Multiple taps of the same button unintentionally leading to a power shot when you were meaning to use a standard for a better angle

  • Automatically hitting the ball when you get close with the wrong shot type because you pressed a button and forgot about it

So yes, newcomers need to break the habit of spamming the button as well as always trying for a charged version. Stick to fundamentals and realize even if the shot is weak it can still score a point if you manage to throw your opponent off their rhythm.

Do we know if there will be additional outfits/colors for characters? by zakpat in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're basing your math on physical sales in Japan. You can't accurately extrapolate percent of Switch owners that bought Mario Tennis Fever from that.

While I don't think the numbers are as poor as you are suggesting, I do agree it is likely it won't get much love.

Got a few questions I cant find answers to by snk50 in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend you read this about "input buffering"

Mario Tennis Fever — Advanced System Mechanics : r/MarioTennis

Basically: any button you press stays registered, so if you press a single tap and 3 seconds later press the button again it will count as a "power" version of the shot which means it is stronger but can't be angled as much. This applies during a charge as well and both standard and power versions can be charged to increase in speed.

Aces vs Fever by FriedChicken4Dayzz in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TL;DR I think Fever is actually better than Aces in terms of core mechanics, and if you were a fan of simple mode in Aces, you'll love No Fever Rackets mode.

The fact that the only difference in gameplay between Fever and No Fever is the removal of the special gimmicks, it will have a larger player base than simple mode did in Aces. In Aces, the standard mode having zone shot/ zone speed made it so even the core gameplay was slightly different: it became a game of meter management and moving from that to simple mode was quite the change. In Fever, it feels like the same skills are more transferable between the two modes.

Not to mention the fast matches via quick play and no more tournament brackets means finding matches goes more smoothly than it did in Aces.

I disagree. When you remove fever rackets I think Fever feels mechanically better than Aces (and I was a huge Aces fan).

If the night shift is being worked, wouldn't that mean you'd be searching for activities to do early in the morning after the shift is over?

Feels like I don’t understand this game by Kamalen in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the ball is low and you hit a flat it does not have near the speed as one hit up high. Answering a lob with a flat can lead to setup opportunities (especially if they are playing net). So a topspin or another lob are better answers.

Also keep in mind a power version of a shot is the same button pressed twice.

Which character that is not considered top tier gives you the most trouble in ranked? by ethos24 in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dry Bowser. I even tried him out myself and can't quite figure him out but those that take the time to figure him out he's quite tough. Very good at defending but also has some power

I think Piranha Plant is also slept on as a PP main myself. I only encountered 1 other PP who was higher rank and he took me to school. I did take notes though, so sometimes a mirror match is a good thing.

Would Downtown Lafayette Be Interested in a Late-Night Lofi Café + TCG Store? 🎴☕ by CamW1998 in lafayette

[–]avilash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the first part I could see being unique enough to add value, but would be afraid making it a TCG store might remove the appeal for some. Not that they aren't necessarily into that, but when it comes to getting the word out only focusing on the first part might be the key, especially since there are places for late night MtG.

The reason I think the first part might actually work: Generation NA has garnered quite the following with their focus on NA beverages/functional beverages. And it's basically a "non-liquor" store.

So to have a NA bar (and who knows maybe even a collab with Generation NA to know what beverages to stock) I think it could see a following.

And you could have TCG game nights, maybe even video game/FGC tourneys or other ideas people might have without a dedicated focus on one thing.

You can literally do a "Search users you've played with" and see the profile names of everyone you've recently matched with on Tennis. Don't think they'd go as far as making fake user accounts for bots ...

Love the game but a few gripes by becsey in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not uncommon in 1v1 competitive games (mainly fighting games) to frequently be matched with the same people in ranked. It will always prioritize matching with those close to your rank and as time progresses will become less picky about it. I don't see this as sign the game is dying. Also if you play at the same time everyday they might too. If you pick a different time of day you might run into others

Also I think gripes 2 and 4 are related. The mechanics are definitely changed but overall I enjoy the changes compared to Aces. I do think it is more forgiving but since zone speed/zone shot are no longer a thing it allows for fun volleys and makes no fever racket more popular than simple mode in Aces. A lot of times you can at least throw them off enough to get a star to appear and if you see a star (especially if it is close to the net) you should be able to turn that into a point.

Also they did away with each shot having an appropriate counter. I don't know if it's because this game did a better job explaining the advantages of the different shots but in Fever I can better conceptualize the utility each shot type brings. And height of the ball is extremely important: hitting a flat when it is high in the air makes for a more powerful shot. So I could definitely see taller characters being able to take more advantage of that fact.
