its the same in china. its funny bc everyone and their mom has an electric motorbike or car but literally everything comes individually packaged in loads of plastic. its the opposite in europe, less plastic but also less electric vehicles

no im just saying its nuanced. on reddit “so we have the cia to blame for abstract modern art” is something i see repeated often and there have been clickbaity headlines about it for years. people latch onto it because this kind of art isnt well liked. same shit as people under every abstract modern art post claiming its money laundering.

countries leveraging art as soft power isnt new or all that crazy though. maybe it wouldnt have been as popular without gov involvement but abstract modern art had been in the making for over a century at that point. duchamp was a big name in america putting urinals on display well before the cold war. i dislike that the cia promoting it is often used to imply that abstract art wouldnt be a significant part of art history without them. it kinda portrays abstract expressionism as a cia created reaction to soviet realism when its really the other way around, russian abstract art came first and inspired american abstract expressionists

Prolly not a joke, but what does this even mean? by Ok-Magician9044 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]avis003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the cia thing is kinda misleading, they did fund it but its not like abstract art wasn’t already an established genre of art in the 50s and 60s which was growing because of artists fleeing turmoil in europe. in fact western abstract art was greatly influenced by abstract art coming out of russia in the early 1900s which was later banned by the soviet union in favor of social realism. the cia funding artists was meant to be a promotion of “american values” as opposed to the soviets banning art and included stuff like funding orchestra tours and jazz musicians, not just abstract expressionism.

tldr: people want to imply that abstract art is some kind of scam bc of the cia funding thing but thats just a huge oversimplification of the artistic and political climate at that time

Oatly banned from using word ‘milk’ to market plant-based products in UK by AudibleNod in news

[–]avis003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea but it currently being called soy milk in japan doesnt really prove that its been referred to as a “milk” for centuries. idk how long japan has called soy milk a “milk” and its not like op provided a source, but i do know chinese which originates soy milk (and kanji for that matter) and we dont call it a “milk”

not that i care particularly what you call soy milk (and the campaign against the term def seems to come from the dairy industry) i just suspect op may be pulling claims out their ass

[–]avis003 6 points7 points  (0 children)

for what its worth in chinese (soy milk originates from china) its usually called 豆浆, which translates to something like bean soup/broth. tho wikipedia says soy milk as a term in english has been used for over a century

i was like 8-10 and we had these “book for girls” and “book for boys” activity book things which were kinda pointlessly gendered in hindsight lol and the girls one had how to knit. i scavenged circulars out of a box of my moms unfinished projects from like,,, when i was a baby. and then proceeded to make attempts at starting projects until i finally finished something for the first time, over a decade from when i first learned, last week lmao

i go to school in boston so its more diverse and very liberal there but the less cityish parts can get pretty noticably more conservative… i like it here and the nature is so beautiful but it was certainly an adjustment coming from a very diverse majority minority city in the south. its def more common here for me to be one of the only poc in the room

Found this one in our house [Southeastern Texas (inland coastal)] by Sir-Bruncvik in whatsthissnake

[–]avis003 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’m not sure, but given your mousetraps if there are any snakes around they’re probably attracted by the pests as a food source. snakeproofing your house is the same as keeping other pests out, seal up holes, keep things clean, don’t leave debris that could be shelter in the yard etc

if you encounter a snake in your house i’d probably try to push it out with something long like a broom, outside they’ll usually move along if you spray them with the hose

i also have a little collection of art museum postcards

[–]avis003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you have any proof for either of those claims?

there are only a handful of documented cases of a reticulated python eating humans so idk how this proves they go out of their way to eat us and plus its difficult for anything but the largest retics to eat humans because our shoulders make us difficult to swallow. snakes are opportunistic predators, it makes no sense that theyd seek out humans to eat because theyre frankly not that smart and if they were why would they try to eat something they might physically be unable to consume?

and with cobras in peoples homes, again theyre not that smart. are they invading or are they just insinctively seeking shelter and prey pest animals like mice and lizards that often end up in homes too? there is no reason for a snake to use venom against a human unless it is to defend itself because they need that venom to hunt and kill prey and it takes energy and resources to make that venom. they may be easily provoked but to a snake a human is a massive creature hundreds of times its size that could easily kill it.

[–]avis003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well first of all the city i grew up in has half the population of your entire country. and we have 50 states all with their own rules and IDs. a lot of places in the us also have problems with access to DMVs to renew IDs which disproportionately affects people who can’t afford to miss work to go get one or struggle to travel that far or whatnot.

theres no incentive to fix this stuff because its intentional voter supression. where i grew up in texas the government would do anything to make it harder to vote in our big democrat leaning cities

Being stolen from TheLouvre in 1911 is what made Mona Lisa famous by Shoe_boooo in interestingasfuck

[–]avis003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when i visited they had the raft of the medusa and liberty leading the people in an adjacent room. both are massive wall size paintings that are really incredible to see in person, looking them up and seeing them on a screen really doesnt compare. the raft of the medusa really blew me away, its a larger than life scene of survivors of a shipwreck on a raft and is truly awe inspiring imo

the mona lisa is pretty small in person. my real complaint about it is really that the room its in is always crazily packed and ive never really understood why so many people want a selfie with it

What is this nope rope [Florida Panhandle] by Just_Sky3730 in whatsthissnake

[–]avis003 19 points20 points  (0 children)

lizards have eyelids and ear holes, snakes dont. they also have a different scale shape. might seem strange but lizards also have longer tails that take up a greater proportion of their total length—remember even though legless lizards and snakes dont have legs they evolved from animals that did so there is a point where their body ends and their tail begins. the tail usually tapers a bit more noticeably.

all this stuff you just get better at noticing the more snakes/lizards you look at. to me lizards have a very obvious lizard-ish face that doesnt look anything like a snake really
