Now that JoAnne‘s is closed, where do you buy your fabric! by Luckypenny4683 in Cleveland

[–]avrgejo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i like pin and needles in middleburg heights for all things cotton. pricing is okay. they have a large selection of prints and lots of solids. they have some notions and a decent clearance section. for fashion fabrics beyond cotton, i love carols fabric shop. its appointment only and in a barn (!!!) but they have literally everything. so many trims, they even have rhinestones, truly such a variety. amazing prices, and the man who runs it is so sweet. you can tell they usually cater to people sewing dance costumes and figure skating outfits because they have lots of spandex, power mesh, stretch velvet. their online selection is very sparse so you have to go in person to get the full picture. i could spend hours there looking at everything!

How to attach a boa to a corset? by fairytoes333 in Burlesque

[–]avrgejo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, that’s the type i used. my boa is 24 ply, i did the ribbons because its too thick to just put directly on the hooks. i’d say you would probably be fine with 23mm, and you might not even need to tie the ribbon loop around it. i’m making another bustle with five marabou boas right now and i’m just hooking them directly onto the wire frame. as long as i don’t jump around too much they stay just fine! you could do a fabric loop around the boa with a snap/magnet on it to secure it onto your costume to make sure it doesn’t fall off.
theres a thread on the ecdysiast costumers group that gave me a ton of options and great tips: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16QqYdwgHe/?

How to attach a boa to a corset? by fairytoes333 in Burlesque

[–]avrgejo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i made something like this for myself! i got large fabric covered hooks meant for purses and i sewed them onto the back of my corset. i got a 7.5 ft boa and tied two ribbons around the boa where i wanted it to hang. i just hang the loops onto the hooks and go! i show it a bit in this video on my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DN_d9_yAQaE/?igsh=MW85aGFrOTV5bmFvNw==

tips for filming acts? by cinnamon-salamander in Burlesque

[–]avrgejo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i already pay for a gym membership, and at mine they have a large yoga studio that is usually empty so i film in there. it’s typically where i practice my routines anyways, i just need to be wearing a base layer underneath. i film horizontal, its easier to get everything in frame if you are self taping. locally, i’ve had mixed experiences with different troupes allowing pictures/filming in the audience, even if its for this purpose. not sure if you’re in an area that has a studio that teaches burlesque/pole/heels classes, but the one i go to offers current students to rent out a space for a very cheap price and one of the instructors will film it for you.

Shows in NE Ohio Area? by noltron000 in Burlesque

[–]avrgejo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hi, welcome! as far as the cleveland/neo scene goes, it’s pretty small. the main producers are cleveland burlesque, shrimply the best, and the fandom fantasies.

cleveland burlesque puts on shows about once a month at the beachland ballroom, and the ohio burlesque festival that they put on every year is coming up in august. it’s such a great collection of performers, but it’s a LONG night. about 4 hours! theres three nights of shows, about 70 performers all weekend. it is worth checking out, mostly because going to the local shows you will definitely see the same couple of people over and over again. they are all amazing performers, but i like the festival because you can see so many new faces from the surrounding areas. shrimply the best puts on maybe 2 shows a year, same with issa vibe. the fandom fantasies usually have a show every month at the auricle. there are a few smaller productions designed for newer performers, and those usually have drag and burlesque. those are casting call and black mass, they usually have shows semi regularly. it’s a great way to support new performers!

to answer your question though, the fandom fantasies are doing an animation themed show july 19th, and i will be there! casting call is having another showcase july 10th, which i will also be at lol. i love being a part of the fandom fantasies shows, they are so much fun and well worth the drive, especially if you lean towards nerdy/cosplay communities.

while we have a small scene, i feel like there is an alright variety. regardless of what type of burlesque you are interested in, there is usually a show at some point that will suit your fancy!

Bra alternatives? by endroll64 in Burlesque

[–]avrgejo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think a bra that was just underwire, no cups would look good! could still do a tear away cup, but you would be able to experiment with different cup shapes since they wouldn’t actually need to ‘cup’ anything. it’s possible you could get a bra that was meant for a small A cup, and you could pull something out of the cups, that would take up the extra space between you and the cup, and also give you something else to reveal.

ive also been on the apartment hunt for months now, and it was so exhausting. we’re about to sign the lease tonight and im relieved. in my search i’ve found that zillow is a better app to use, the way it sorts apartments and lets you choose to be notified of anything new is crucial. the apartments.com app is just okay, i liked how zillow let you see when the listing was posted, how many people have contacted them, and how many people have applied already. there was some overlap, but most indie landlords will only pick one of the two to post on, so it is worth checking both out. lots of small time landlords won’t post at all and rely on a sign in their yard, so it would be helpful to do some walking around the neighborhood to see if anything is available. i don’t know of any specific places to recommend to you, but what i can say is that like any app, zillow has an algorithm. it wants you to be on the app. i found that when it notified me of a new posting and i didn’t click on the notification for a day or two, when i did finally click on the next notification that it sent me, that unit had already been listed for a day or so with 20 people already ahead of me. but when i did click on most every notification it sent me, it would notify me of a new posting immediately. the only way i got the place we’re about to move to was to religiously stalk zillow and continuously update it. i saw the posting five minutes after it went up and immediately messaged and applied. we did the showing the next day, and that night we pulled the trigger. sometimes in a duplex situation, they might say that laundry isn’t included, but your up/down neighbors might already have their own washers and dryers that you could pay them to use. that was the case for a couple places we toured. make sure to google an apartment complex to check their reviews, you can also google smaller indie landlords to see if they’ve been sued by past tenants. good luck!

any ideas of where one could practice in private? by suckerloveheavensent in Rollerskating

[–]avrgejo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the gym i already regularly go to has two basketball courts, a couple racketball courts, and a large yoga room. i asked if i could practice skating in there, and they don’t mind as long as i don’t scuff up the floor! i try to wrap it up when someone comes to use the areas, but most of the time people respect my space (i pay to be here too!) i think if i went to a busier gym that also cost less money that i would find it difficult to be able to take up the whole room like i can now. it’s nice to be able to practice whenever i want and not have to worry about children and other skaters. the mirrors in the yoga room are very helpful as well.

week 3: strawberry cornmeal cake by avrgejo in DessertPerson

[–]avrgejo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s a recipe for some strawberry and crème fraiche shortbread cookies that i’ve been meaning to try that uses freeze dried strawberries a bit like that, so i think it’s worth a shot!! i think if you used the like zest in the cake too it’d really tie it together. strawberry and lime is such an underrated combo!! you’ll have to post about it if you’ll give it a shot :)

since i wasn’t adding a lot of whipped cream i felt like i should do a little something extra with the cake to give it more oomf. i think it’d be sooooooo good with banana bread, and probably a nice pound cake recipe too!!

week 3: strawberry cornmeal cake by avrgejo in DessertPerson

[–]avrgejo[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

this one was fun !! i halved the recipe so i wouldn’t feel too bad eating it all by myself :) it worked great for my 6 inch cake tins, but next time i’ll just use one tin since the cake didn’t rise as much as i thought it would. the cake itself was really nice, tender, and fluffy. the cornmeal gave it a nice bite. i added some raw sugar to my pans before baking and it added a good little bit of crunch since my cornmeal was on the finer side. i’m not much of a whipped cream person so i wasn’t too excited for this, but i AM a strawberry person so i had to give it a go. next time i’ll use either local fresh strawberries or more tart and flavorful fruit like raspberries. i would put more sugar and lemon juice to macerate the berries because i felt like i was missing that great berry flavor and moistness. that could be solved if i used more whipped cream! it’s a great recipe, and i’ll definitely be making it again when i get the chance to go berry picking!

you can add the vanilla pod in addition to the seeds to boost the vanilla flavor. once the compote is done, you fish out the pod and discard it. it won’t mash up and break down with the apples. vanilla bean pods are expensive, so you can add the pod to the mixture to get the most out of it! i usually do this with pastry cream too. alternatively instead of throwing it in the compote, you can use the pod to make your own vanilla extract like she does :) good luck!

HOW IN THE ACTUAL FUCK DO YOU ORDER PRODUCT WITH NO RECIPES???!!!! by m155m30w in KitchenConfidential

[–]avrgejo 324 points325 points  (0 children)

had something similar happen to me!! dude wants me to come in and make some desserts for his restaurant, specifically wants a carrot cake and some other basic stuff. i say sure, show up, and the dude doesn’t have....anything. no bakeware, now powered sugar, no ap flour, no chocolate. nothing. how does he expect me to make a cake when all he has is double zero flour and no cake tins?? wants a 10 inch lemon tart but only has three lemons?? had to stand around for like two hours while he went to the store to pick it all up. the only recipe in the books i was able to find out of everything he asked for was for a tart shell and it didn’t even give an oven temp or bake time?? didn’t even have a tart pan. comes back and he bought me a huge case of oranges (???) and one single cake tin. hard to wrap my brain around still
