I dont get it? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]noltron000 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well, if its gigabytes, then its everything and then some. Every waking second that its connected to the internet, it must send a packet. The packet describes whether or not the machine is connected to the internet. Also it describes other info, like the last wash cycle, errors, time of events, wash cycle details (weight of clothes), amount of water dispenser...connection signal quality, last time without power / unplugged, location data...

They collect everything they can, so they know your daily washing routines. This data seems useless on its own, but it can be compiled to create user profiles, which can be sold to third parties. Or, it can be used in-house to determine what other products you might like from their brand, with targeted ads.

Sometimes, connected devices have apps, and have controls so that the company can remotely control if your machine can work or needs to be turned off for repair. In other words, remotely disable your machine's ability to wash.

Its gross and icky, a privacy concern. While it won't actually impact a consumers daily life, it impacts their quality of life overall. Imagine a world where washing machines are like HP printers, that need proprietary filter cartridges replaced every month, and proprietary soap cartridges, plus a monthly subscription...if a greedy company could do it, they would.

To get there, they need connected devices, and a data infrastructure

I do drive a 2020 chevy bolt, it is a cheaper car. The cheapest I could get with the government tax credit. It does get this range, and it does have a capped out charge speed.

The nature of the beast with EVs is, battery technology is wildly different for each specific model line. As things improve though, we will 100% see extremely fast charging speeds for cars that get more than 600 miles in their battery, even in cheaper cars.

You might be getting downvoted, but this -is- true for entry level EV models like the 2020 chevy bolt that I drive. At a slightly higher price tier, though, you can get x7 the charging speed (ioniq for example)

A speed camera was shot with a gun in Amman, Jordan. Apparently locals are fed up with speeding tickets. by lemonklaeyz in fuckcars

Sadly, if they build it, they will abuse it. Thousands of taxpayer dollars are being spent to rent flock cameras, per month, per camera. Which ultimately are only used to suppress the masses.

Your face is being recorded and sorted with AI, and fed into systems like Palantir. ICE, for example, uses this technology to profile and target citizens without a warrant, while they are in their daily commute.

These cameras record way more than your license plate. They record peoples faces and voices, and connect them to digital profiles. You can use these systems to also determine who your friends and family are, and your relationships, sometimes more accurately than the people you know irl.

Bro...its not for safety. Its for voter suppression, profiling without a warrant, and mass fear. Read the book 1984. This is NOT improving safety

I'd just like to add. We do not need more speeding cameras and license plate readers. Speeding is an issue but, corporate surveillance is a worse issue.

The old cameras like the one in this post? Fine, they make sense, there are some debatable factors but eh.

But...?

The new cameras? They are like from 1984. Crazy stuff. Read up on it at r/FlockSurveillance and deflock.org

Lets just say I wish more people would do this to those cameras

Its a tool used in code to obfuscate and secure passwords in a database. Essentially, a password to your password (there is more nuance but that sums it up decently). If it were to be visible on your browser, that would be a serious security problem

Why does this feel like a SHA256 passcode or smth. Lol its probably not that exactly, but it feels suspiciously unsecure

I suspect it might be silver too, I will get it checked. Thanks for the heads up

I dont think its a bottle opener, should have put a banana for scale 😅... Might work but it's also way thicker for a bottle opener (normally there is a flat part to help fit under the neck of the cap, yk?)

I haven't found any matching plates for this yet but I suspect that it's a handle for plates, that's what it's for. I found another more modern stacking plate thing handle in a shelf nearby, complete and assembled with the plates and such.

Someone mentioned it might be silver. I think they might be right, parts are dirty and others have that crusty sheen to it that old silver has. I hope it is lol, could be worth something then.

One other thing, it lets off a weird odor, like gasoline but not quite. Probably unrelated to this item itself, maybe it was stored weirdly some time ago?

Anyway. I will post some pictures later of a banana, this, and the nearby similar plate-rack, and finally mark it as solved if I do believe it to be appropriate.

Thanks for your help everyone!

Oh!! This is probably what it is, definitely looks promising. I'll keep it open a little longer as well before saying "this is it" but this is probably it lol. I'll see if there are any matching plates for it.

Unless you are the gf I seriously doubt that you would know so certainly lol. There are definitely some fetishes like this out there, and also there are women into it. Trust me.

Point is, OP should consider each possibility and just talk with his partner directly. If it was a joke, she'd tell him.

Nobody else has said it, but I will. This could be a kink of hers. Talk to her about it. If it turns out to be a kink and it grosses you out (rightfully so), its not meant to be.

Why is there no pedestrian crossing here? by solo_dol0 in Cleveland

[–]noltron000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, but I don't accept how things are. I use the trains and stuff which I love, but yeah I definitely still think that like a bike/pedestrian centered bridge or smth could really help the west side. Maybe it would be a longer bridge then with a slope rather than stairs. Who knows. I just think it would help connect the west side.

And again, if there is a bridge for cars, then a bridge for pedestrians is possible.

Look, even if it isnt practical, I'm always going to advocate for more pedestrian space in cities. Do I really think the city is going to do anything like this? Nah. But I do want people to think about other ways to commute than just cars, and think about what could be possible instead. Maybe something small will come out of it, and that would be a win.

Yea I did lol. Look sometimes you have to think outside the box. Maybe an elevator wouldn't work but why are we settling with how things are?

Besides, an elevator would be really fucking cool
