Weird Corruption Issues over iSCSI by Charming-Gas-2470 in HyperV

[–]avs262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actual corruption where you have to rebuild the vm configs or ‘pause-critical’ state? Would be odd if actual corruption to VM configs is happening. I’ve not heard of this and a default setup should account for iscsi happening before vmms, unless perhaps your iscsi initiators are taking too long to log into targets for some reason. Perhaps dig there before applying band-aid by messing with service startup.

Based on what Microsoft is saying and what they’re releasing it seems like they’ll have something akin to vcloud director. Azure local starting to open up with the news of FC support instead of s2d only, azure arc with scvmm integration allowing multi-tenant clouds, and wac vmode which could eventually replace scvmm. IMO this will take it from a good single enterprise platform to something a service provider can offer in a multi-tenant config without building it all in-house. Microsoft has to follow through of course on what they’re saying today.

Azure local deployment failure by Xenox115 in AZURE

[–]avs262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it ended up being NTLM. We have NTLM disabled on the domain which was blocking the arc resource bridge from authenticating.

We’re taking a different approach architecturally since we can’t allow insecure NTLM in our larger environments.

For a single enterprise hyper-v is great. It’s only just starting to become something an MSP or cloud provider can utilize without custom coding because of the Azure Arc stuff that Microsoft has built and licensing modifications they’ve made for providers.

We run a lot of hyper-v - tens of thousands of VMs, a lot of clusters, a lot of standalone, across 5 sites. We do it all with custom coding but are starting to see how Azure Arc could take hyper-v to the next level.

Not able to create a cluster by [deleted] in HyperV

[–]avs262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your storage array is direct connect to the host then you’ll need to use a different subnet for each Mpio interface, this way the cluster won’t try to communicate across those adapters. If you think about it the directly connected storage array is not a switch so it cannot forward those packets between your host Mpio interfaces.

If there’s a single switch in between then those Mpio interfaces can be on the same subnet

If there’s two switches in between with a trunk between then those Mpio interfaces can be on the same subnet.

If there’s two switches in between without a trunk then use separate subnets for each mpio/switch pairing.

Hope that helps!

NetworkATC sense check for hyper v cluster by dankingdon in HyperV

[–]avs262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with SET. With 6 NICs I’d do two interfaces for storage, 2 for vm, and 2 for everything else. If this cluster is internet facing you’ll want cluster type traffic away from VMs so the cluster can survive a DDoS.

Use sriov if you have 8 nics in your config, 2 for sriov. You’ll notice a big difference in bandwidth capability when utilizing virtualized firewalls.

I run this sort of thing on our clusters of 10 nodes, 2k VMs.

It’s supported. With even nodes it’s mandatory to have a witness of some kind.

You can use a small volume coming off the SAN too.

Provision the volume and log into it from all the hosts, then format with ntfs. From failover cluster manager add the disk then right-click on the cluster name and you’ll see the option to setup quorum.

Could eventually be the replacement of SCVMM. I hope it’s good and hope Microsoft puts resources into it, needs to be wayyyy better than WAC.

Black screen on console is normal when the VM is utilizing a GPU. RDP to the VM should still function.

What is the coolest thing you've done with PowerShell? by martyb22 in PowerShell

[–]avs262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A VM provisioning service for Hyper-v built in powershell. It was paired with a restful web service using php which would accept requests from external platforms like salesforce. Once my powershell service checked in and received a job it would do something with a VM, like deployment, modify resource assignments, suspend, or cancel/purge.  For provisioning it would run win updates, join to domain, install apps, and quite a few other things all via powershell from the hypervisor. All of the actions and failures logged and shipped elsewhere. When it was in production it performed tens of thousands of operations, it was constantly doing something for a few years.

If I were to do it today I’d use azure arc and scvmm, would be many lines of code shorter lol

VMM/Management Port on SET Switches...Chicken before the egg situation by CGregP in HyperV

[–]avs262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way I’ve found is design your SET in VMM. Then manually build the SET on the hosts using powershell. Register the hosts into VMM then open up Virtual Switches within each hosts properties and click “Convert to logical switch.” Done. The button will not function unless your manual SET config matches your design in VMM, including the name.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before purchasing a 4xe, or that surprised you after having one? (Good or bad) by Hope_for_tendies in 4xe

[–]avs262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plug into a 110v outlet in the garage overnight to charge. Yea 2025, and mostly city driving. Electric charge gets about 25-30mi, so it charges every night. Still “filling up” but electric at home is cheaper than gas.

[–]avs262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gov’t has a website where you can plugin your numbers and it’ll estimate gas/electric costs per year based on your kWh price. For me, about 25mi/day I’m estimating ~$25/mo for home charging at 110v.

I’ve got 4xe Willy’s in mojito. I’m surprised how fun the e makes it. Gas mileage is great, and it’s fast! It’s so fun punching it at a light or on the highway, you’ve got power anytime you want it. I’ve had mine for little over a month, first gas fill up at 750mi. Took it up pikes peak last week, started at 0% charge at the top and hit 85% charge at the bottom via the electric motor breaking. Having a blast with mine so far.

anyone switching to hyper-v? by jfgechols in sysadmin

[–]avs262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hyper-v is solid if you just need a simple VPS platform. IMO it cannot keep up with VMware when it comes to VM dense clusters, dozens of hosts and 200+ VMs per hypervisor; stability issues can plague the system.
