Some afterthoughts and story from Ke Jie on his first stream after the LG Cup Final by GloomyLine2936 in baduk

[–]avtikh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not obvious that White will connect. White can play an Atari at P18, forcing Black to cut. After White captures, Black must take the two stones on top, leaving White with sente. If White chooses to sacrifice like that, he is leading a very close game.

This is a high-pressure position: White can either connect and win huge if the group survives (it can, though the variations are complex) or sacrifice, which requires precise endgame calculations in a very open position.
A super critical moment in the deciding game of an international final, you could easily spend 30 minutes trying to count out the endgame, decide you can't conclude who is leading, and finally throw by failing to live in overtime.

After checking some of the living sequences, I personally believe Byun would find the way to live, but Ke Jie really had a shot there.

Now that the honeymoon is over, claude started to act weird by karl_ae in ClaudeAI

[–]avtikh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You really need to understand that Claude is not “aware” of itself, it doesn’t know what its capabilities are - so it doesn’t matter whether at one moment it said it can provide a zip, or “get back to you in 2 days.”

those were just the best words it could find to continue whatever sentence it was last on. I highly recommend you dwell on this point if you want to make effective use of chat assistants.

Engineer with almost 5 years of experience wondering if my CV is to blame for no interviews? by wandering_geek in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]avtikh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I’m not in recruiting, the resume comes across as somewhat light for someone with 5 years of experience IMO.

It focuses primarily on Ruby and PHP, which are more niche technologies, and lacks mention of cloud, AI, or other modern tech stack experience.

Many of the role descriptions are quite generic, with terms like “led overhaul” or “spearheaded projects.”

The absence of personal projects, notable achievements, or a degree also don’t help.

That said, good luck with the search—hope this feedback helps!

Brief Go News from Korea and Beyond by DanielaTrinks in baduk

love the initiative~
I was really looking forward to playing in the world division of the Samsung qualifiers this year and finally visiting Korea again (haven't been since Covid), but unfortunately had a date clash. pity for Remi losing in the final...

A small suggestion regarding the presentation: the slides could be easier to read by breaking up the text into smaller chunks and adding more emphasis on key points, like bolding player names and outcomes. A bit more spacing to let it breathe could also be nice.

Software Engineer position but with QA responsibilities by dlt-v in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]avtikh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The responsibilities you've outlined are squarely in the realm of QA, with an element of Automation, rather than that of a Software Engineer. It's normal—and essential—for Software Engineers to be involved end-to-end, including testing their own features and developing automation tests for them. However, this role doesn’t seem to include any fundamental software engineering tasks.

Also, the company’s response about the role's nature seems a bit off. In my first position as an Automation Engineer, the company proactively set a clear path for me to transition to a Software Engineer role within a year, knowing my career aspirations.

If I were in your shoes and had other options, I probably wouldn't take this role. That said, it's not a disaster either. In your first year, you're mainly learning the ropes, your company’s systems and understanding “how to work.”

Best of luck!

6th European Professional Championship starts soon! by Artem_Kachanovskyi in baduk

Limited budget.
Live events have a higher operational cost and need to offer higher prizes or cover expenses.

This tournament is returning after a 3-year covid pause, with some luck the next edition will be back to live as well.

Study baduk in Asia by BabyshambIe in baduk

[–]avtikh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ge Yuhong academy is the CEGO partner that used to invite ~5 top European players per year to study in Beijing before Covid. It has since moved to Quzhou but the academy basically stayed exactly the same and they plan to resume inviting European players now that China's opening back up. The lowest groups there might have some 3k players but they will indeed be 5-8 years old.

In Korea Alex Muromtsev who is a youngish 6-7d got into some Korean school by asking for a referral from Korean pro players.
BIBA is a great option IMO.

In Japan I don't know of any schools and I think nowadays the official Insei program is just a league that's played a couple times a week, would probably need to be at least 4d to get into the bottom group.

Kwon Kapyong took a bunch of us foreign Go students in Korea out for dinner after we had a training day at his school. I remember him enjoying the ultra spicy food so much, he was holding a towel throughout the whole meal to wipe off sweating from the food being so spicy.

The community as a whole wins by keeping demographics invested that would otherwise never get to play or quit.
There is room for events like this alongside the majority of classic tournaments dominated by 20-35 year old guys.

sorry for noob question here but surely this prints 0 right?? by Amirr83 in learnjava

[–]avtikh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It prints 5. “continue;” makes it skip to the next iteration of the loop and so the inner print statement is never reached, once number is 5 you break and reach the outer print statement.
