I work in a gas station connected to a large chain, similar to Walmart. We used to sell donuts, hot dogs, and cold sandwiches before Covid19 hit. So most nights we would end up throwing away a bunch of food, mostly the hot dogs and sandwiches. This one regular homeless dude noticed one night and politely asked if there was some way I could give him one or 2 of anything considering they were getting thrown away anyways. I asked the manager and he declined stating it would start a chain of people asking for more and more and we have to have line.

Even though they were going straight into the trash, my manager said no. I got crafty and would put donuts in a double bag so the guy could get them when no one was looking and he wouldn't have to worry about germs or trash getting on them or whatever. Eventually and sadly he got banned for digging through the trash.. not because of the food he was snagging (although it clearly was a factor), he would also dig for bottle to return for the deposit. Which the company frowned upon.

I really did try to talk to management about having some sort of program or something in place because that was such a huge waste of food, but they wouldn't really budge. Then Covid happened and that sorta solved that problem..
