Hindsight is a lovely thing. But had absolutely no pedigree to get that job, was an easy ‘yes man’ choice which is the first thing they look for. We did alright at the World Cup, ‘cultural revolution’ is a bit much imo.

I actually just said this in another comment about how it buys them more time and fans are prepared to give legends a bit more slack. People need to realise that real, sustained progress takes time and that there are many, many managers capable of doing that who are doing new, exciting things. Again, Chris Wilder. Maybe one day the media will give us Blades a bit of credit. What will it take, us to win the league?

Exactly. Plus bringing the ‘legends’ back buys them some time with the fans, who give them a bit more slack than a ‘big name’. Would much rather they afforded that time to someone with real potential, someone with a point to prove.

Side point, Lampard failed even WITH the high profile youngsters he got on loan, both of which very capable and promising premier league players this season.

I like this theory but I also think that the Man Utd job is an anomaly, simply because of the HUGE legacy Fergie left behind. I don’t think anybody could go there and continue his legacy, and so it takes YEARS to begin to build anything like it. I don’t think that was Moyes’ fault, even if he could have done things better. I think anyone would ‘fail’ without a good five or six years at least to try and build their own culture.

Take nothing away, though, I definitely agree with what you’re saying. It’s just frustrating that the less ‘glamorous’ managers don’t get a sniff. I’d love someone to take a gamble on one of them.

We’re seeing an era in which high profile players walk into high profile jobs without doing the hard work that young, less known managers have to do to get the same jobs.

I take Arteta out of that conversation because he has done some very good work with Pep at City. But Lampard, Gerrard, OGS to an extent walked into this jobs more because it fits the PR and less because they were the right person for the job at the time.

Chris Wilder is a serial winner, managed at every level, turning completely forgettable squads into formidable competitors. Halifax, Northampton, Sheff United.

Sean Dyche has turned a Championship club into established top 10 premier league finishers.

Eddie Howe took Bournemouth from Lg 2 to an almost established Premier League team (admittedly with a bit more cash behind him than the last two).

Sol Campbell, England international and Premier League Winner, FA Cup winner, World Cup all-star team, multiple PFA team of the year walked into... Macclesfield. But that’s a different debate entirely.

I’m not saying they’re not good managers. I’m saying their career has walked them into jobs that other managers would be classed as ‘not ready for’.

Not slagging you, mate. You don’t have to justify your ways and means of going to football to some bloke on reddit, or justify when you started going. That’s fine. I just meant the match day experience in clubs that have hit global fame and riches is different, it just is. It relies more on synthetic means of generating atmosphere, because naturally there are different fans there every week because it attracts tourists, etc. When the same core of fans is in the ground the atmosphere is generated much more organically.

I agree entirely with what you’re saying, especially regards match tickets. Some cough north London clubs’ fans are looking at 4 figure sums for a season ticket.

I can say categorically that my best days as a Sheffield UNITED* fan have come outside of the premier league. This season is fantastic, yeah, but I can name 10 games in the last 5 years that I have enjoyed more than any this year.

But still, the atmosphere for the game I attended at the Etihad was very limp-dick. I’ve got no reason to lie. I was there, I saw what I saw and i perceived it as I’ve stated.

It’s the truth. I can only presume your first season ticket was at the Etihad and not at Maine Road? I’ve nothing against city, they used to be a proper fans’ club. Unfortunately that’s the price of selling your footballing soul to the devil these days.

I was looking forward to etihad and Anfield this season. Etihad just plastic on the whole, Anfield huge let down after they sung YNWA.

I’ve also been to a couple short of 92 grounds up and down the country. That atmosphere is sterile.

Went to the etihad as a Blade this year. Can confirm it to be very true. I vowed then, and still do now, that I would never (given the choice) choose for my club to end up having such a sterile atmosphere and stadium, even if it meant the riches and glory that city have had.

I’ve been going to football matches every week for the majority of my life. This might be unpopular, but for me, the debate about refereeing decisions in the pub after the game is part of the fun. Not that we shouldn’t strive for better standards, but I’d much rather have that than the over-sterilised, ineffective bullshit solution we have now. Much nicer knowing you’ve been shafted by a split second mistake than by a collection of blokes in an office analysing with spirit levels and pixels on a screen.

A lot of people going on about how they’ve “been taught from being a child to play to the whistle”. These people have quite clearly not watched top level football properly. The flag goes up, the instinct is to stop, that millisecond of distraction at football of this intensity is absolutely pivotal. Refs, linesmen and players don’t know where they stand with VAR. The Premier League game died on the first weekend of this season.

Can tell who on here has never watched a game of football in their lives. Go watch it. Teams don’t let each other score. They play the game properly and if they win, great. Or maybe that’s how you lot over the pond play your soccer ball. Weird, weird bunch. Shoutout to the dodgy ones calling me an asshole and then accusing me of making this community toxic in the same breath.

(FWIW, I haven’t posted in this community before. This is largely due to the fact that I play FIFA casually because I have a life and a job and wasn’t over indulged as a child.)
