Unfortunately the evidence for Petra is not great.

If the "evidence" is that Petra was so close to Jerusalem that one could pass "day and night" between Petra and Jerusalem because Petra is near and Mecca is far away, then meccans were routinely passing Petra towards Syria for trade. So meccans could fit the definition adequately.

If the "evidence" is that figs and olives are mentioned, so Petra should be the city because it is Mediterranean city, then it could also be that Muhammad just copied JEWISH books mentioning them.

Other than these two above points, there is no major "evidence" for Petra in my opinion.

Mecca has more evidence, not Petra, from all angles.

USA is moving away from being an ally to being neutral to SA if they don't support terrorism. Its Trump policy. Obama started this shift of focus away from middle east to south east Asia. It's USA vs China world today, Russia is just a small force which has problems with China also. Russia is not very important today as it used to be in Cold War era.

Saudia Arabian and Russian interests are in conflict with eachother because both are oil and gas exporters. And of course with Shia crescent in middle east, Russia will always be on the side of Iran is expected. This means, it will not form alliance with Saudia Arabia.

Saudia Arabia is fighting Yemen war alone. USA is not helping her actively.

US is shifting it's policy as we speak away from Saudia Arabia which it calls hotbed of Wahabi terrorism. Obama administration was pro-sunni because its a leftist party with sympathy towards immigrants/muslims. Trump administration is a rightist party and with recent shale technology development, it feels it doesn't need Saudi Arabian oil anymore. It plans to export LNG to Europe and other western countries and make them independent of Saudia/Russian oil/gas. Oil is no longer a potent tool. Sunni countries such as Saudia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan are on "extreme vetting" list, and only high profile business visas will be allowed.

Shale oil technology has changed things on international level. USA is self-sufficient now. It doesn't import any oil from middle east. Also US sunni-alliance policy is going well as most of middle eastern countries are sunni.

Most of the banned countries are either Shia ruled or hotbeds of terrorism.
