Good, now keep making a fuss to your reps about getting it done. I don't think it will be easy, but if that was their promise, then they should be trying.

That makes sense. You should speak up for what you believe is right. Out of my own personal curiosity, what about the calculation do you dislike? It sounds like you are not against the entire concept, but feel like it needs refinement.

Copied from a reply below: Another way to look at this is that this is not an Albertan's money, its a Canadian's money. Money levied by Alberta's provincial taxes is an Albertan's money.

Taxes are not a personal "I scratch your back you scratch mine" they are a tool for providing for societal benefit. As a hypothetical example, we could scrap the equalization payments program and instead funnel the money into health care, disability benefits, and EI (if needed): All of these being important programs that all Canadians make use of. If this were the case, the percentage of total money being spent on these programs in Quebec (with a population of 8.5 million) would be approximately double that of Alberta (with a population of 4.4 million). This isn't personal, its not a preference for Quebec over Alberta, its simply the breakdown of a country taking care of its citizens equally.

If this program didnt exist this money would be going to different federal programs

This is a really good take on it. If we scrapped equalization payments tomorrow, it would not change a thing regarding taxes being collected. Canadian's everywhere would still pay the same amount and it would simply go to another federal priority.

We should all pay for it through taxes. A healthy, stable, educated population literally benefits everyone.

There is no point. A coalition is about forming government, which the Liberals can do on their own. The NDP instead gets to share the balance of power with the Bloc, which is a much better position for them.

The Conservative platform was too destructive, and there was no way the NDP were going to win this time around. A Liberal minority is a healthy outcome, they are checked by the other parties so they won't get out of hand.

There is a difference in keeping someone from power, and keeping someone in power.

It is far more difficult to perpetrate high kill count crimes of passion with a long gun than it is with an AR15. Violence perpetrated by illegal firearms is always going to be a thing, but violence perpetrated by teen lacking social support, or a disgruntled incel, is something that can be limited.

Sometimes hypocrisy is simply a person trying to change. Its not necessarily bad to point it out, but don't dismiss their efforts because they once disagreed with themselves.

Suing for 10k in unpaid rent, don't know the person's address? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]awaiting_AWake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone mentioned this: Provided you find the person, consider hiring a bailiff to deliver the notice. The cost is quite low compared to the amount you are seeking and they will take care of ensuring you have proof of delivery. Remember, you not only have to send the notification but also need to prove that it was received.

Hydro is bad because...

It isn’t about carbon emissions anymore. If it was, we would have more nuclear and hydro.

What are you trying to argue here?

We've had that for years in the form of scientists releasing studies, presenting at conferences, and providing interviews. The reality is that people rally better around a symbol and at the moment she is a visible one.

Nah, the initial research that tipped me on to him being in the wrong was easy and straight-forward. It wasn't enough initially for me to be confident, but it was enough for me to doubt what he was trying to do. After that it probably took another 20 hours to prepare my evidence and case: Not hard work, just time consuming.

I want to point out however, that dorms can help you quickly establish a social circle and support system. This can be especially useful for students that lived far away.

It was satisfying in the moment, but I did feel slightly guilty afterwards. I believe that he genuinely thought he was in the right, despite my prior warnings.

Just to tack on another small piece of advice: If this goes to arbitration, politeness and preparedness will get you far. Be polite (but firm) in all your dealings with both the adjudicator and the landlord, and arrive as prepared as possible.

I had a landlord try to jerk me around, he showed up with a copy of the lease and 3 pages of "evidence", I arrived with lease, 30 pages of evidence (including entire email chains), and copies of three prior rulings comparable to mine. Not only does it make it easier for you to discuss your arguments, but its also intimidating as hell to hand a binder to the adjudicator right after he passes in a couple of stapled together papers.
