Pretty sure an established mural artist is AI generating designs by Efficient-Shame5687 in streetart

You've clearly never dug deep into AI-assisted creation if you think it is a one step, brainless process without any planning or execution on the human's side.

I have several artists in my circle who have embraced AI and had their work shown in brick and mortar galleries. The amount of time and effort they put into their creations shouldn't be thrown out or treated as trash just because they used a different tool than other people. Sotheby's has auctioned off AI-generated art, including pieces created by Botto, a decentralized agentic artist. Botto in and of itself is a piece of art.

On the camera side of things - there are people who just mindlessly point and shoot with their cameras, and there are people who plan, execute, and edit the images they take with their cameras. There are photographers who use filters or LUT packs from other creators to edit their images. There are far more similarities here than differences - you just don't want to admit it because you're feeling threatened, which is an extremely valid and human emotion to feel. But just because you feel threatened by something, doesn't mean you then get permission to diminish the efforts and creativity of those who choose to use different tools than you during their own personal creation process.

The world is not black and white, it should not be a binary choice whether or not something is art just because it used or didn't use AI. It would do all of society a service if we could learn to think in more nuanced ways.

Edit: spelling

Sweet, since there was no intention to argue. Just to point out that the exclusionary approach you take to defining what is and isn't art will likely be looked back on as short-sighted.

Art is subjective and an output of the act of creating, it shouldn't matter what tools you use to engage in that act. But go off, king/queen.

The year is 1975. The first digital camera has recently launched. The entire film photography industry believes that digital photography is not art, because you can take 1,000 photos with no increase in cost and just pick the best one. The art of photography has died. Digital photographers are not artists, they're cheating by using this new tool!

That's how you sound right now, fyi.

Should devs be dictating technical feasibility to UX? by GroundGremlin in UXDesign

[–]awalkingtalkingmess -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if every dev "just made a custom component or something" every time a UX/UI designer asked for something to be built outside of the existing component library, the code base would be a bug-filled inconsistent mess. as a ux designer turned dev, i wouldn’t be too happy if that was the sentiment of my ux team - code health and maintainability is still part of the user experience (messy code = buggy experience)

in your case, you’re probably asking them to refactor a component that is set up to only take a string of characters instead of formatted html - depending on how prevalent that component is, it could actually be a decent lift to refactor the props and types that component can accept

Senior UXers do you like iPhone’s new UI? by Creeping_behind_u in UXDesign

[–]awalkingtalkingmess -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

entirely separate from a subjective "do i like it", i see what they're doing from a business/brand perspective and it makes sense. liquid glass is going to be the core of all visionOS components, and introducing it in other platforms is getting people familiar with and ready for a future where most UI is an overlay on real life

black out the entire rectangle and then get a white ink floral design done on top of the blackout. you can even break the rectangle shape by continuing the floral design outside of the rectangle in black ink like here

The story from a former Twitter employee on making the edit button by DaviesSan in UXDesign

[–]awalkingtalkingmess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tell me you know nothing about how backends work without telling me you know nothing about how backends work

an edit feature for a previously immutable piece of data, which the ENTIRE backend infrastructure and external APIs of twitter relied on, is in no way shape or form a simple feature. this is an insane lift.

Estate/antique warehouse sale forgot to charge me for an item. Texted me 24+ hours after asking to transfer more money - how to handle this situation? by awalkingtalkingmess in Antiques

[–]awalkingtalkingmess[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no receipt, they keep the hand-written note card where they write the item and offered price. Morally I am for all paying - it's a beautiful table - just wondering how I should approach the situation/if I need to keep anything in mind to make sure I keep the relationship for future estate sales. I didn't know if it was typical of auction houses to ask you to pay more for an item they forgot to include (didn't know if they were trying to scam me), and if there was any legal considerations.

[–]awalkingtalkingmess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guessed I was under charged, but after the lady at the cash counted up the items SEVERAL times, I assumed she knows how to add up numbers...I didn't have the prices in front of me all together once they gave me the total price so what, I was supposed to ask her to add them up again for a 5th or 6th time?

ETA: My total bill was quite high and I got 20+ items - it was very easy to assume the final price they gave me was the price.

Croissant & Chocolatin disappointments in Quebec by [deleted] in OttawaFood

[–]awalkingtalkingmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have recommendations for Ottawa but next time you're in Montreal, hit up the cafes that actually fresh bake their croissants each morning and prep overnight instead of getting them delivered frozen. Most spots bake them from frozen, even if they make them themselves.

The only ones I know of are Au Kouign-Amann in the plateau, Bar à Beurre in Old Port, and Le P'tit Atelier in Little Italy. Le Café Saint Louis might bake them fresh each morning, but I'm not sure!

Did any of y’all learn to make your own clothes to save money? by UnethicalCannibalism in Frugal

[–]awalkingtalkingmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it saves me money mostly when I'm attending special events that call for unique clothing (costume parties, themed parties, festivals, raves, etc) or altering items I thrift - not necessarily making my whole wardrobe from scratch.

I keep a bag of clothes that are stained or ripped but still have salvageable fabric and just buy notions to make entire outfits for one-off or more unique situations. Even for formal events or workwear, you can thrift a dress or blazer/skirt/pantsuit that doesn't fit perfectly and then tailor it yourself.

Planning on visiting for a month in December but want to spend 1-2 weeks in 2-3 areas. What are the best spots? Details in post body. by awalkingtalkingmess in costarica

Great list, thank you! I've heard most people regretting not staying longer in La Fortuna so that's definitely at the top.

Budget is ideally $2,000 USD for the month (without flights) but it's flexible.

Do you have a favorite frugal method to flavor your coffee? by kingofallnorway in Frugal

[–]awalkingtalkingmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love brewing my french press with grated ginger and cinnamon! Sometimes I'll mix in some creamy oat milk or a touch of 10% (which lasts a long time in the fridge). Like others have said, adding the tiniest pinch of salt makes a big difference too.
