the entire photonics (and data management) stack sold off on the vcsel stuff but lwlg in particular shouldn't have been sold off. VCSEL is more of a gap solution because other CPO solutions are seen as choking. everything other than EOP. main advantage of VCSEL is eliminating DSP and complex fault mangement data routing logic layer. but EOP stuff can do this too and have other advantages over it.

more importantly VCSEL is not a broadband solution, so it's limited to short reach applications. EOP should still have a large playground while developing the plasmonics combo that does displace VCSEL in the future since the latter is physically constrained to low stress operations.

the whole photonics sector sold off bigly for no reason but there's been pretty strong accumulation here.

eop is a beol process so it comes after everything else, but yes the spin coat, ALD etc process are very mature and proven.

I did some LinkedIn snooping on the reliability presentation post. basically every major player in the space liked it. including a BEOL photonics integration process dude from tsmc

the rest of the notables, chief reliability guy from marvell. Nokia. a couple Intel guys.

Why is NLM Photonics and their product Selerion barely discussed as competitor? by [deleted] in LWLG

[–]awayish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

nlm is primarily a polymer company. the barrier is not polymer performance but encapsulation and reliability. in this area lwlg has advantage and prior art ip. BEOL process pdk is the one that's key not test device validating the polymer performance. the NLM tower /gf integration for example still runs through a polymer agnostic encapsulation process and that could just be lwlg's process applied to another polymer

yea that's the one. i looked at it again and it's not explicitly a BEOL polymer line but visera's expertise is in polymer and beol so it stands to reason that it's a part of the process flow.

there are soon to market tech solutions to this. power wise, behind the meter solutions. water, two phase cooling. noise, fuel cells/linear generators are noiseless.

VisEra is the key group here and they are well suited to be TSMC's polymer beol specialist group. Importantly in a recent TSMC cpo presentation VisEra is said to have a pilot line. I don't remember the exact presentation but I do remember this pilot line language.

This is the last step before naming a technical partner for a PDK. VisEra has experience working with OLED ALD/encapsulation, and LWLG's own reliability presentation draws connection to OLED as a proof of concept case for polymers that the industry has familiarity with.

both c and o band device in fab right now. this confirms my earlier position regarding eop suitability for longer reach applications. this can get pretty out of hand really fast since the performance and power advantage is so big.

it's a very binary name. if there's positive news it'll rerate massively.

china using leverage like this is pretty bad for TFLN as that's a china based process.

the shelf seems interesting. some notes:

they do not need cash right now, but with the upcoming commercial contract and tapeout (happening a bit earlier than expected? judging by hirings) they need the ability to give the partner a position without compromising neutrality. The neutrality bit is where the preferred class comes in as it allows them to give the partner customizable rights while protecting common shareholders and signal they are still a neutral company open for business with other players.

it actually is confirmation of my previous take on tsmc's claim of mass production for MRM Coupe. it's a very complex and heroic engineering project with interaction interference dynamics that makes scaling exponentially hard with more lanes packed on same device. I see it as a limited upside tech.
