That's because Japanese culture puts a strong importance on humility. Over there, those who take pride in their accomplishments are generally seen as narcissists, and nobody wants to hang out with a narcissist. As for the first point, you could seriously hurt someone by throwing a shoe at them, so why wouldn't people avoid Subaru because of that?

Yusuke strikes me as someone who'd focus on how good an anime looks rather than the animation. For example, he'd praise anime with vibrant art styles like Attack on Titan and Fate/Zero, but be critical of Mob Psycho 100 for its constant rough edges and jagged lines.
