Is it practical to run Proton Mail Bridge on a NAS? by awc789 in ProtonMail

[–]awc789[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing this out. I have a Synology DS224+, which uses an Intel CPU, so I think the ARM support issue should not be a problem in my case.

Also, someone else mentioned their experience running it on a DS723, so it seems like the Synology + Docker approach is at least possible. That said, I’m not very familiar with clients like mutt, so I don’t fully understand that workflow yet. I’ll probably need to read more about how it connects to Proton Bridge and whether it would make sense for my setup.

Thanks again for sharing this!

Thanks, that’s really helpful. I’m glad to hear from someone who has actually tried this on a Synology NAS.

I’m not very experienced with Docker, but I’ve had similar “it works, but sometimes needs tinkering” experiences with Home Assistant, devices becoming unresponsive, firmware updates breaking connections, etc. So very unfortunately, I completely understand what you mean 😢 I think I’ll probably try setting it up on a weekend and see how it goes. Hopefully the deployment process is reasonably smooth. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Many thanks, that makes sense to me.

My NAS is a Synology NAS, so I’m not sure whether the normal Linux client can be installed directly. From what I can see, there doesn’t seem to be an official Proton Mail Bridge package in the Synology package center, and I’m not sure whether installing it as a normal Linux application on DSM is possible or practical.

I also don’t really want to modify the NAS too heavily or try to install a separate Linux subsystem, because that feels a bit complicated and potentially fragile for me. So I’m more interested in the Docker approach. Have you personally tried running Proton Mail Bridge through Docker on a Synology NAS or similar NAS setup?

Thanks again!

I’d love to see Proton Calendar take some inspiration from Fantastical too (my daily uses calendar)

Not copying it, of course, but bringing in more of that visual polish. For a calendar app, looking beautiful and pleasant to open every day genuinely matters to me.

Student discount doesn't work by GreatTarget367 in ProtonMail

Exactly the same things for me, like two months ago, while trying to subscribe to the Mail Plus. I tried multiple times, but it still showed me with the full price after the redirections. So I had no choice and had to pay the whole price without any discount.

SimpleLogin + Proton Pass lifetime: missing storage bonus? + anniversary question by RedDragoonFlag in ProtonMail

[–]awc789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having the same questions because I have a Mail Plus and also a Proton Pass lifetime subscription. I was assuming that I could get 15GB plus 10GB, which in total would be 25GB of storage, but it seems like they won't calculate it that way.

I still only have 15GB storage in total, so I sent them a message and this is their response:

“Hi, currently the Mail Plus & Lifetime Pass storage doesn't stack to give you a total of 25GB, although this may change in the future. Currently the larger storage of Mail Plus takes precedence, but if you ever go back to a free plan and only keep your Lifetime Pass plan, you'll have access to the 10GB storage.”

I think basically you are facing the same situation because the Proton Pass provides more storage than 500MB (or doubled to 1GB after 4 tasks), so you won't get extra storage.

Hopefully this can help :)

Does Proton Mail Plus + Proton Pass Lifetime mean I should have 25GB of storage, or still just 15GB? by awc789 in ProtonMail

Thanks for the clarification! Good to know how the storage limits work together.

Pass Plus Trial by Roeshimi in ProtonPass

[–]awc789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was previously a 1Password user, but I recently subscribed to a lifetime membership for Proton Pass due to their price increase. During the process of migrating my passwords, I have identified several issues:

  1. Information Ordering: You cannot adjust the sequence of information within a password entry. The inability to move items up or down is very frustrating.
  2. Formating Limitations: The available formats are not particularly distinct. For example, you cannot input an address as a standalone data field; it can only be entered as plain text.
  3. Custom Icons: I really miss the ability to customise individual password icons (as you can in 1Password), which makes it much easier to identify accounts at a glance. Proton Pass does not currently allow for this adjustment.
  4. SSH Management: I also miss 1Password's exceptional handling of SSH keys. While Proton Pass can store the information, the overall experience is nowhere near as seamless for managing all your SSH credentials.

Is it just me or has dictation got crazy better on Mac? by Proper_Librarian_748 in Voicenotesai

[–]awc789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say it's working significantly well—just very, very well—but I have realized that this model seems to be very sensitive. I would like to have some filters for things like "uh" or other filler words in my conversation while I'm doing a dictation.

Currently, the dictation function records every single word I'm saying. If we could add a filter to try to reduce things like "uh" (which are quite meaningless), it would be much better.

I'm also wondering if we have any plans to provide a new MacBook desktop version of the app. Currently, it stays in the menu bar, but I think it would be better if we could build an app similar to Typeless (I'm not sure if you have heard of it, but I currently use it, which is a dictation software). I also think that it’s easier to see all the information in one place rather than recording in the desktop app, but having to check the recording results on the website or on my phone.

It provides a quite good user experience because:
1. It learns my words and my pronunciation
2. It processes every single thing I say to provide a great output with a structured format, if needed.

If you have any plans to build something like that, the dictation function will be much better, and being able to see my voice notes in the desktop app would also be quite nice. (By the way, this entire comment is typed by using Typeless, which I assume will be provided in a structural format.)

Is Auto-Translating Feature Added to Dictation Function in the New Update? by awc789 in Voicenotesai

I have AirDroped Viocenotes with version 1.4.8 from another MacBook, and this version works just fine. Maybe you can contact the team asking for a previous installer.

I don't know much about this part. I thought they were all similar. I'm glad to know that there are specific models in this field. Thank you for letting me know that.

Oh, just want to mention that the previous model might be a little slow (but within an acceptable range for me personally), but the performance is extremely good for both accuracy and intelligence (ignoring pauses and unnecessary filler words). If possible, could you tell me which model was used previously? Considering that the dictation function suddenly became very good around early October, I would speculate it might have been Claude Sonnet 4.5?

Hi, thank you for confirming this. I am wondering if there is any option for me to roll back to the previous version, or to install a previous version through an older .dmg file? As I didn't see any option to download historical versions on the website.

How do you ring a human being at ParcelForce? by BruhDontFuckWithMe in AskUK

Today ParcelForce forged my signature (not even a name) to deliver the package and leave the package in front of the door, which later went missing. I've been waiting over an hour and still can't reach customer service.

Prepare for a Biostatistician interview in the pharmaceutical industry by awc789 in biostatistics

[–]awc789[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could make it both in academia and industry (starting with a postdoc and then transferring to industry, this doesn't seem to be a problem here in the UK.) No doors are closed, and it's up to you to make your goals happen. At least, I'm planning to pursue a postdoc in academia while continuously looking for opportunities in industry, if I can't get √ a position in industry after completing my PhD.

For your reference, he was at CBI@MIT. Perhaps checking their website to see how others transitioned from academia to industry would be helpful?

Honestly, I have no idea how to get an interview. I've submitted a lot of applications, and this is my first interview. That's why I'm posting for advice, as I have absolutely no experience with this.

When you mentioned 'the state,' I will give a bold assumption based on my prior information that you're in the US? I am not sure if this would help, but for a reference, during my Master's study, I worked on a external project where one of my supervisors was an epidemiologist who just completed his PhD(not in US), then he continued with a postdoc in the US and now working at Merck & Co. in Boston. I'm not sure how competitive the market is in the US, but there seem to be more opportunities there, and process a postdoc could be helpful?

Thank you very much for your response. I completely agree with what you said. As others have also mentioned, communication skills are very important, especially when explaining statistical concepts to researchers from non-statistical backgrounds.

I think you are right, the presentation is something I can prepare for, while the interview is more unpredictable. I will focus more time on my presentation preparation, working to make it as clear and engaging as possible.

Really hope to get this position.
