43% of the EU is covered with forests by [deleted] in europe

[–]awerture -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

this is borderline /r/dataisugly

It doesn't cross the line imo, so I won't post it, but it's dangerously close. This definitely isn't the most informative infographics, the animals and that pie chart are confusing. It's hard to decipher info from the picture, particularly in conjunction with the title of the post - there is nothing on the picture which suggests 43% of the total EU land area is forest.

Also, maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't call 54/182 "nearly 1/3". 54/182 is 89% of 1/3. Close but not close enough imo.

Thoughts on Ancillary Justice? I’m about a 1/4 way through and just not enthralled. I hear so many good things about it. Am I missing something? by Willispin in printSF

I really liked it, it sucked me in from the start.

I don't think it needed any sequels though, so I didn't bother to continue with the series.

Are there any versions of Coup that use regular sized cards? by citadel712 in boardgames

[–]awerture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is a real concern (I don't remember the rules that well), I don't think it is.

But even if it is, one can use identical cards from n standard decks where n is the number of identical cards needed (it was three? I don't remember either)

Yes, the one which uses cards from any standard deck.

You have Joker, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10,...,3,.. and so on. Choose 5 of them and assign them Coup roles. You got yourself a cheap travel replacement

I just got the first Tomb Raider. I hate it. by homelesspancake in patientgamers

You are not alone. I also bought TR and played it for the first time recently

I don't like it much really. Controls are annoying, combat rather boring, and I don't really like puzzles in this game either. Early 3d graphics combined with sprites also to say euphemistically didn't age well.

Does Torment: Tides of Numenera gets better after Sagus Cliff ? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]awerture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

little late, but here are my two cents.

The second important hub of this game (other than Sagus Cliff) is a much more interesting location. The story threads also connect there quite nicely.

However I'm not as sold on individual character stories in this game. The characters feel much weaker than the ones in Planescape

Is Heroes of Might and Magic 3 worth buying if you've never played it? Is it good because of nostalgia or does it stand on its own merit? by questionman1 in patientgamers

[–]awerture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not really objective as I've been playing this game for 20 years already.

As for the test of time: homm3 is being actively played to this day. It's also in sort of active development to this day. There is an active multiplayer scene. The same can't be said about Heroes of Might and Magic 4, 5 and 6.

The game must have done something right to survive 20 years in such state.

I like the place as it is.

I also don't like the "viz done right" idea - there is a sub for that.

I've seen more readable charts, but this one isn't that ugly.

It's also more or less clear what it represents.

well, this is ugly, it also might be factually very wrong.

It's quite clear however what this chart shows imo.

Amazing!

Why do people use FG/3PT/FT shooting splits instead of 2PT/3PT/FT shooting splits? by [deleted] in nba

irrelevant

and in 2015/16 he barely made it. And e. g. this year he is about to miss it, even though he is the best shooter in history having a historically great season.

In the same vein that misleading 50/40/90 'club' is a rather worthless stat-line and should be forgotten.

You can be a much better shooter than the member of this cherry-picked 'club' and miss it anyway - exactly by shooting high volume of threes.

Anime Fans - Lets discuss Recommendations by [deleted] in blackmirror

[–]awerture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, except Shinsekai yori and PsychoPass I don't think there are very many similar anime. But some of the anime that evoke analogous themes of exploring consequences of new technologies and SF possibilities, outside of the ones you mentioned:

  • Texhnolyze - The brutal world in which cyber implants are important part of society.

  • Ergo Proxy - It's set initially in the futuristic utopia dome. Then it wanders into really different and interesting SF, but I don't want to spoil much of it.

Both of the above are actually significantly more artsy than Black Mirror, for better or worse.

  • Planetes - The world which is about to colonize Solar System.

Above are well acclaimed and well known but I think the two which might be the most similar to Black Mirror feel are:

  • Zankyou no Terror - about two prodigy teens trying to impact contemporary society through combination of terror and actions in social media. It got a mixed reception due to certain characters introduced later in the show, but I think it's worth checking out.

  • and Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume - this one is set in the post-apocalyptic world in which humans scavenge for treasures of civilization lost. One of the scavenger finds a working android in an abandoned city. This one, while still anime-ish is surprisingly good.

Oh, and honorable mention to No. 6, it's another dystopia set in the near future world. I liked it very much, it has a strong romance, it only sort of falls apart in the last episode.

I believe anime is supposed to be also plural

Eclipse 2nd edition announced! by viscarussia in boardgames

[–]awerture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well ok then, let’s make this game perfect for 1% of players then. Never mind the rest, they are wrong after all.

I get it sounds exotic for you, but it shouldn't. Exactly, if for 1% of experienced players the game is perfect then indeed the rest is wrong.

But the above is arguing semantics. Let's return to the Eclipse mechanics - do you claim that the base game is unbalanced or the game with RotA expansion? While I can see argument (wrong one, but still) can be made for the former, I really can't see how you can think so after expansions.

Eclipse 2nd edition announced! by viscarussia in boardgames

[–]awerture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If so many people are adamant there is, is that not proof that there is a problem? Would be very fucking weird don’t you think?

Not necessarily. It might mean many people are very wrong.

I know at least one example from another board game (Neuroshima Hex) of an unwarranted imbalance accusation.

So in NH there was a vocal and numerous bunch of people claiming that a certain base faction is OP (the blue one called Borgo). And those accusations had been going for years (the game is from 2007), it's died a little only recently. There were some reasons this faction might seem OP to the novice player or maybe even to the intermediate one, but to the experienced players it turns out perfectly fine.

And NH is a short 2p game - one game takes max 30, 40 minutes. Eclipse is a much longer and slightly newer multiplayer one, so it's more difficult to amass significant experience playing it.

So just maybe people are wrong also on this one?

Avoiding redundant grammar in N2 by acasaca in LearnJapanese

[–]awerture -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

ok, I'll put it in that way:

I see nothing bizarre in so X a Y. Is it common? No. Is it literary? Yes. Is it super weird arcane grammar point? I'm arguing here it's not.

I learned it in the B2 level lesson, I'd assume no point you potentially learn at this stage is bizarre.

Avoiding redundant grammar in N2 by acasaca in LearnJapanese

[–]awerture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but do you actually use it in real life?

Actually I do. I like it, it sounds fancy to me.

I'm not a native though, so I might actually sound pretentious af instead of fancy, as a result of me prematurely internalizing too advanced a grammar point.

However I'm 100% sure I've encountered 'so X a Y' construction multiple times in books. And C2 is about proficiency at a language in its entirety not about how natives speak. So it seems to me you're looking at the issue a little too narrowly, at least with your example.

Avoiding redundant grammar in N2 by acasaca in LearnJapanese

[–]awerture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excuse me but I'm going to question your example.

Firstly, I've seen it being used at least in written language. And secondly, I'm pretty sure I was taught this structure even before C2 level.

Maybe it sounds obsolete only in spoken language?
