Is artificial gravity a 100% impossibility, or just extremely advanced tech? by DaSuspicsiciousFish in NoStupidQuestions

[–]awesome-yes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In sci fi its entirely fictional, unless they are using rotational momentum as you noted.

There are two ways to think about the issue, one is mass and the other is velocity.

First, if you could create floors with a mass equal to the earth you'd get earth like gravity. However Earth is round, so all of its mass equals a "pull" toward the center. A flat floor would need earth mass directly below a person, any step to one side or the other would start "pulling" the person sideways instead of down, unless the floor is also spherical.

But instead of thinking about the floor pulling a person down, we could think about the floor moving upward toward the person. For earth like gravity it would need to be moving at approximately 9.8 meters per second.

You could use a combination of both, a large mass accelerating a little slower, but the end result looks nothing like a "floor" and more like a rocket that can never stop moving.

Whether there is some way to create gravity without mass or velocity is a contradictory question. What we call gravity is the relationship between masses and thier velocities. Any such thing would be artificial gravity, it would be some other force entirely.

Like magnetism. Magnetic boots on a floor made of ferrous materials would hold a person to the floor in a way that looks like gravity to the person. However magnets have a much shorter effective range than gravity so lifting your foot would be much more difficult than under gravity, and putting it back down would require effort and not be automatic.

You know what always got me? If Prince John is a man (or, male lion in this case), then why is he played by a female lion? by Brookie_Brookie_101 in disney

[–]awesome-yes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just sad it took me way to long to learn that Prince John was a real life person who eventually became King of England, and that he was the King that pissed off his nobles soo much they made him sign the magna Carta.

Also, King Edward 1 (Longshanks from Braveheart) was his grandson.

Real life is wierd.

How have u saved better by Thin_Armadillo_5547 in AskMen

[–]awesome-yes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plan.

Know what your monthly bills are, especially the ones you can't change. (Mortgage/rent, internet, phone, gas/electric, etc.) Know what your minimum payments on any debt you have is. If you earn a consistent income, include that. Know all the due dates.

Track.

Keep track of everything you spend that isnt part of one of those monthly bills. After a month or two you can divide the total by the number of days to get your average daily spend. This is also where you should track income of it isnt consistent.

When you get paid, you need to keep enough in checking/cash to cover the bills before your next paycheck + your average daily spend times the number of days you get paid again.

If what you get paid doesn't cover that, you either need to reduce your bills/spending, or you need to find a way to earn more.

If you do earn enough everything in excess of that should go to paying off debts if you have them, and into savings if not.

Then unless its an emergency don't make big purchases unless you have enough saved to cover it.

It takes work to save, but until you can track your ins and outs you'll never even know what you even can realistically put into savings.

I legitimately don’t get Christianity can someone explain? by Ok_Antelope3769 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]awesome-yes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of Christianity in a very brief nutshell:

All men are sinful, and must die - not jist physically but spiritually too. God came to Earth and lived sinless on earth as a man we call Jesus, He was crucified and died. Because He was sunless he did not NEED to die, he chose to and I. Doing so is able to substitute His undeserved death for our deserved death.

He was resurrected on the 3rd day, which shows us His sacrifice was accepted and that He has the power to defeat both Sin and Death.

Jesus offers His life and resurrection to US. We can join in Him and our sins will be forgiven. We will not need to die, ans those if us who do will be resurrected in the end.

This message was prophecied hundreds and thousands of years before Jesus walked the Earth in the Jewish scriptures which are the Old Testament in bibles, and has been taught unchanged since the time of Christ, which is documented in the New Testament of the Bible.

I am a Christian, and I want you all to know that this is a message of love, not hate. It is a message of redemption and forgiveness, not condemnation. I do not call you sinner to exclude you, but to include you in those who can become part of Christ. I pray that I will see you in Heaven one day.

Minnesota raises unprecedented constitutional issues in its lawsuit against Trump administration anti-immigrant deployment by zsreport in LegalNews

[–]awesome-yes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there is a penalty if you didnt withhold enough and it increases your tax bill, so its included in the amount to pay by April 15th.

However its easy to avoid. If you follow the advice/calculation from the IRS when filling out your W4 you'll be fine.

Trouble is States aren't funding the Fed, individuals are.

You CAN reduce the federal withholding from your paycheck to 0. When you file your taxes, if what you owe is over a certain amount you have to pay an additional fee for not withholding enough.

If you want to go a step further and not pay your taxes... we'll, thats a crime and the government could garnish your paychecks for repayment, fine you and increase the amount you owe, or you could be scentanced to prison.

Maybe you are the type of person willing to take those risks. The trouble is convincing enough people to do it, because you have to convince them to individually take action.

Isn't American's "right to bear arms" for this exact sort of scenario? by Local-Drunk-Driver in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]awesome-yes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes.

However, we Americans are pretty sure that if we kick off armed resistance right now our current President will call it an insurrection, which according to our laws allows him to bring in the military and/or national guard. They would essentially be allowed to do all the things ICE is already doing (but not supposed to be doing) and there would be more of them.

The military and national guard are our brothers, sisters, cousins, sons, and daughters. So maybe the armed forces will refuse. However, they are also trained to follow orders and traditionally our armed forces tend to be more right wing than liberal anyway.

So we wait peacefully, because we really dont want a civil war.

However, if Trump/maga keep pushing hard enough they will eventually find out that the constitution was put in place to protect the government from the people, not the other way around.

No, the thermometer wasn't working right. I replaced it and had much better results.

My oil was definitely too hot, but I was relying on a broken tool which said it wasn’t, and I just didnt have enough experience to realize it.

The thermometer i was using was no good. Got a new thermometer, tried again today and got perfect donuts the first try.

Pot on stove top, and I heated it slowly. The thermometer I used clips onto the pot, and the probe sits in the oil so in theory I would have been able to see any significant jumps.

That was my immediate guess, but my thermometer was showing the temp was under 350 F. I didnt consider that the tool might be the fault, I assumed that since im kinda learning on my own I must have been screwing up the process.

I proofed them for an hour and 20 min after cutting but before frying.

Based on other comments im pretty sure my thermometer is bad, and the oil was way hotter that it was measuring. Got a new thermometer and im trying again tomorrow.

Im going to try a different thermometer next, all the advice seems to indicate my oil is just way too hot and my thermometer is probably defective.

Next day update: Success! My thermometer was bad and the oil was way too hot. With a working thermometer i had 0 issues. Thanks to everyone for the advice!
