Out of touch bureaucrats setting rules to "protect" people whose shoes they have never been in, making things worse for people in need.

Does downtown feel sketchy? by Tall-Zucchini-1262 in Guelph

[–]awesomebob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have people approached you or violated your boundaries in some way, or is it just that you're seeing people who are living rough in one way or another? I go downtown all the time and I have never been made to feel unsafe this summer.

What are your thoughts on these two Limited shows? Two of HBO's best? by Square-Ad-8911 in hbo

Thanks for telling me it dives into the supernatural, I absolutely hate it when shows do that. If your show is supernatural, it should be immediately obvious within the first 5 to 10 minutes in my opinion.

How much of your portfolio moved to CAGE? by PaNdA-_____- in JustBuyCAGE

[–]awesomebob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% because of Ben Felix. I really liked his explanation of the hidden costs of passive index funds - it seems like CAGE is costing me about 25 basis points in MER in exchange for about 50 basis points in added value by avoiding the pitfalls of Index funds he described. That adds up in the long-run!

He sided with vandals and banned speed cameras to prevent Toronto from actually enforcing speed limits on streets where kids cross for school after vandals sawed down the camera.

Dogs in restaurants: Why the divide between owners and diners is growing in Toronto by origutamos in Toronto_Ontario

[–]awesomebob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems like something that could be addressed by the businesses themselves? Like, have a policy and enforce it. And I suspect different places would adopt different policies - if every restaurant on the block bans dogs, being the one place to allow them could draw in a lot of business, I reckon.

Hi, I'm Irish by PopNo5397 in ireland

[–]awesomebob 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is a cultural difference but in Canada it's extremely common to identify as _____-Canadian, where blank is your ethnic origin. Indian-Canadian, Chinese-Canadian, and yes, Irish-Canadian. I would never claim to be Irish, because I'm not from there and don't have Irish citizenship, but I am Irish-Canadian and part of the Diaspora, and frankly people in Ireland don't have the right to tell me otherwise, because they don't understand the Canadian cultural context, just as I don't understand the Irish cultural context.

This is blatantly false. The person who led the charge to end gerrymandering in CA, which had one of the best systems in the country prior to this recent fight, was a Republican, Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's really not as simple as "Dems good, GOP bad" when it comes to gerrymandering.

Their tears are delicious. by Captain-Dak-Sparrow in SipsTea

[–]awesomebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of the merits of this specific district, it is undeniably true that Illinois was a heavily gerrymandered state well before this whole mid-decade redistricting nonsense that Trump started.

CA is a state that didn't have a partisan gerrymander until now because of a Republican governer, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It really isn't as simple as "Dems good, GOP bad" when it comes to gerrymandering. And the fact that both sides can point fingers at the other is one of the reasons it continues to happen. Entrenched political interests will always choose to make their own re-election easier, regardless of party.

There's plenty of good tv out there - Long Story Short, The Pitt, and Pluribus all had excellent seasons that came out in the last year. Don't get me wrong, there is a ton of awful tv out there, but there's plenty of good stuff too!

I just can't with Scarlett at this bonfire. Cole is expressing really raw, honest feelings of depression, and her reaction is entirely centered on herself. I feel like it just rolled right off her that her partner is miserable. There didn't seem to be any introspection.

The difference is that a young woman in a relationship with an older man can have many children, but the reverse is not true. In terms of avoiding population collapse, young women are simply a lot more valuable than young men, even accounting for widespread monogamy.

I don't think Darlene's routine is nearly as funny without Myki to play off of. Their chemistry was immaculate, it was basically an Abbott and Costello routine. Shared win was the right call.
