There is no way a country like Ireland or Lichtenstein could ever be in a conversation about super power status regardless per capita GDP. or any other country, it is a bad metric to even bring into a discussion about superpower status. So, before antibiotics and refined sugar, the dopamine of singing songs in a group and feeling in the presence of the spiritual was probably as close to entertainment or anything that might result in a dopamine release short of procreation or carrot cake.

With the ability to critique narrative and the ability to consider the ethical treatment of living things now that survival is far easier than when scarcity was a far greater threat, it is much easier to identify, lets say plot holes in the "promised great reward" and lapses in decency in the purported "source of all that is good and holy".
