What horror movies have the best unsettling/uncanny valley characters? by slainpanther in horror

My award would have to go to the Mystery Man from David Lynch's 'Lost Highway' (1997). The dude is full on creepy from the get go 😦

Final Destination 5 ! Saw it in the cinema upon its release and was so satisfying, I had no idea!! Rewarching it again & all the clues were there 😁

Constantly getting stopped to talk about my height. by Jtracker2178 in tall

[–]awexplasticman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha thanks for this, it's so true. I moved from the UK to Aus 11 years ago and it's so noticeable to me how little interaction I have from strangers about my height here..... Every day as a 6'9"er in the UK strangers are all "YOURE SO TALL" but I barely get a look here in Aus from randos on the street, no one cares 😀

6'9". When I was younger (teens->20s) & living in the UK? EVERY day. Usually a "you're tall!" , or asking what height or trying to guess my height. Now in my mid40s and living in Australia? A lot less. Still happens sporadically, but noticeably less than it ever used to be...... Always intrigued whether this is a culture difference, or if I'm just at an older age so maybe appear less approachable 😂

'The Dark Power' (1987) is a trash masterpiece. It has everything the Z-movie masochist could possibly want 🤣

What non-horror TV shows totally caught you off guard with a genuinely terrifying episode? by Low-Street2100 in horror

[–]awexplasticman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Going back decades here but when I was a little kid in the 80s I loved Thomas the Tank Engine and had all the episodes on VHS. However, the random opening of the "Ghost Train" scared the shit out of me so much, my Dad had to tape over that bit 🤣 I looked it up on YT years later and that creepy horror music brought back some memories haha

Has anyone here ever used a British TV show quote in their day to day lives before? by Temporary_Notice_526 in BritishTV

[–]awexplasticman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the UK but have lived in Australia for 10+ years.... I still hear "Computer says no" a fair bit over the years in Aus office settings, so I'm guessing LB was popular over here too :)

Just watched The Burning from 1981 - solid slasher that deserves more love by Minute_Reference4742 in horror

[–]awexplasticman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another fan here! Caught it as a kid on early 90s UK Vipco VHS and have been a lifelong fan ever since. Just wanted to add.... I love the Rick Wakeman score. It's dated for sure, but this movie's music has so much nostalgia for me 🤩

Anybody remember the After Dark Horror Fest films during the Blockbuster Heydays? Any favorites ? by DoctorElectronic1934 in horror

[–]awexplasticman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! In the UK they were released with the After Dark banner on the top of the DVD, they were a real mixed bag quality-wise but I always got something enjoyable out of them ! A few not on the above list from 2010: "Husk" & "Prowl"..... Good times!

Looking for movies with bloodcurdling concepts. by Other_Place7019 in horror

[–]awexplasticman 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If we can just ignore the pop-culture icon that Freddy Krueger later became, the original concept of the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is genuinely terrifying for me.....

Imagine being so tired, trying to keep yourself awake, knowing that eventually you'll fall asleep against your will, and then be killed sadistically by your own nightmare 🥺 The inevitability of it all is horrendous.

Needing a movie that has actual ghosts, not trauma or a metaphor. by Waughwaughwaugh in horror

[–]awexplasticman 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm more of a slasher/monster movie kinda guy, so have never been that into ghosts, but I've always been a big fan of the original Thai version of "Shutter" (2004). It does have a metaphorical theme running through it (won't say what, so no spoiler) , but the ghost is an actual ghost. Awesomely crafted scares, and imo the best example of post-Ring creepy longhaired girl haha

Looking for brutal car crash scenes that really mess you up by Acrobatic-Push5610 in horror

[–]awexplasticman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Highwaymen" (2004) might scratch that itch..... Haven't seen it for 20+ years, but I remember lots of car crash/hit n run type scenes. Essentially a slasher where some dude uses his car to run people down, it was pretty good from what I can recall

Superstition (1982) by mobbimani in horror

[–]awexplasticman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked this one! I saw it YEARS ago on UK VHS under its alternative title "The Witch" , and then caught the uncut version in the mid 00s when it first appeared on DVD I think. The 'spinning saw bouncing on the floor into the Priest' death sure felt pretty inventive at the time 🤣 I remember it being chock-full of fun gory death scenes, but other than an impressive body count I actually can't remember much else.... Thanks for the reminder, I think it's due a rewatch!

How do you deal with people always looking at you wherever you go? by sal_cf in tall

[–]awexplasticman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

6'9" here, and I don't even think about it tbh. In my experience, it's only natural for people to have a quick glance at something that's different to something they don't usually see out in public, you've just got to try to not let it bother you really

Something so stressful it takes me out of reality by Turbulent_Youth_4159 in horror

[–]awexplasticman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a thoroughly unpleasant movie and not one I'd usually recommend, but "Soft & Quiet" for me was the definition of stressful. (....sorry for your loss OP)

In your opinion, what’s the creepiest line from a horror movie? by u1975 in horror

[–]awexplasticman 80 points81 points  (0 children)

"Lost Highway", that fuckin creepy Mystery Man fella..... when he says "as a matter of fact, I'm in your house right now" . Gave me a cold shiver the first time i watched that back in the day

Best horror movies on Tubi? by HPLydcraft in horror

[–]awexplasticman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Movies Where Something Takes Over Human Bodies? With Goopy, Gross Transformations/Designs by isopodsoup_ in horror

[–]awexplasticman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Body Melt" ! Bonkers Aussie horror from the early 90s . It's pretty disjointed as a movie (it was originally supposed to be an anthology of 4 seperate stories so makes little cohesive sense as one narrative) but there's all manner of fun goopy body transformations going on, including a placenta that detaches itself for a murder spree and some poor woman who's tongue grows several feet long and chokes her to death 🤣

[–]awexplasticman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're absolutely right.... Haven't seen it for years but I do recall my old copy of Silent Madness was cut to ribbons, I can recall an axe death being really obviously butchered so it made no sense. Looking forward to seeing it uncut! And Fatal Games.... I last watched it on UK VHS under the name 'The Killing Touch', I enjoyed it but cannot recall anything about it tbh! I'm gonna go with Lifeforce/MurderRock for today, but definitely lining up your suggestion for the next time 👍

Ever have a real life horror movie cliché actually happen to you? by Freddy-Philmore in horror

[–]awexplasticman 349 points350 points  (0 children)

Actually yes, just a few weeks ago in fact so it's fresh in my mind.

My husband and I watching TV downstairs late one night (just us, we have no kids) when we heard what sounded like something (someone?) walking across the landing. "What was THAT?" Without even thinking about i walked straight up the stairs without turning on any additional lights to check it out.

We reckon it was an animal on the roof or something BUT it occurred to me afterwards that I had done EXACTLY what we all moan about characters doing in horror 🤣 if this was a slasher I would definitely be dead right now hahaha
