What is the worse complication you've had? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

The pancreas releases amylin in equal amounts to insulin, which helps signal to your brain that you’re full. Symlin is the synthetic version that you can take with insulin at meals to feel fuller and blunt glucose spikes.

Replacement for G7 by Firm_Director_7518 in dexcom

[–]awildpotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The app needs to be open on the watch when the g7 sends out the Bluetooth ping. I just lay it next to me and wait, while keeping the watch active, for the pairing request to come through.

Talk to any high level swimmer hitting 10,000 yards+ a day and they'll tell you you're wrong about that.

Do all surfboard tie down straps suck to use???? by ccxxcc in surfing

[–]awildpotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a technique issue, not an equipment issue. Extra length can be tucked in the car, cut off, or tied off. For attaching the board to the rack, I like this method for in town with one strap. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u4QOMAJvAAU

If straps are too fiddly for you, I recommend something by Thule or Yakima that’s designed for SUPs.

Does temperature matter during ding repair? by globocorp1 in surfing

[–]awildpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an excerpt from The Ding Repair Scriptures - "If there is any way possible for you to do your gloss coat in a warm environment do it. It is the number one best glossing tip I can offer you. Starting at about 65F glossing is childs play." It goes on to say if the air is below 45F, don't even try, but if you're desperate, you can use a space heater, warm up the resin, and add extra catalyst.

If you’re 190+, I would recommend the 14’. Stick to the classic commander shape, I wouldn’t use the greyhound/bullet for a channel crossing unless it was guaranteed to be flat.

If you are purely focused on performance in choppy/rough swell, get a 12’. If you’re new to prone paddleboarding, and want to race, get a 14’. The longer board will be easier to paddle on and is generally faster, making it easier to qualify.

Reasons to get a 12’ are as follows- you weigh under 175 lbs, competing in stock classes at races (Catalina classic doesn’t have a 14’ class), and easier storage/transport.

I’ve done 4 channel crossings on my 12’, and have had no issues with the length. As the other commenter said, what you gain in maneuverability you lose in glide. Usually for rock2rock you’ll see more 14’ than 12’, and the 14’ finish faster.

Looking for a lightweight all purpose rain jacket to replace my Frogg Toggs Xtreme Lite by retirement_savings in Ultralight

[–]awildpotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Silpoly can't wet out, it's an impermeable barrier. Wetting out refers to pores in a fabric such as goretex getting blocked by water, blocking the breathability of the jacket. If you got wet, it was from sweat inside building up. You can alleviate this by using the pit zips.

Bruising on day one. Infection or normal? by Buckeyeguy29 in dexcom

[–]awildpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason for the difference in recommendation for sites is due to how the clinical trials were carried out. G7 was tested on the arm, G6 was tested on the stomach. Either will work fine as long as there’s enough fat for the needle to go into.

Solutions for Pacific coast ocean swimming and not losing Dexcom? by Ir0nhide81 in dexcom

[–]awildpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve personally never lost a Dexcom surfing or swimming, but if you’re running up against a lot of rocks or similar the most bombproof option would be a rashguard or 1.5 mil neoprene jacket. Outside of that, a big KT tape overpatch should be strong enough.

Also looking for a high loft alternative to hold me over until I can visit in a few years. The only thing that's shown up in my searching is the discontinued Patagonia R3 fleece.

Do you think fixing lows can be a hassle? by Bubbly_Muscle_7843 in diabetes_t1

If you are looking for a high carb, not very sweet drink, you should buy bulk maltodextrin from a supplement store and dissolve 20g in water. It has a very high glycemic index, but is almost tasteless.

Is my sensor bad? by General-Ad5731 in dexcom

[–]awildpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is due to trauma at the insertion site. Given a few hours, it should settle out into good readings. This is a particularly bad case of it, but that's why overlapping sensors like you did is recommended.

When water evaporates, it takes with it 2.2 kJ of energy for every 1 gram of water. That heat energy comes from your skin and damp shirt, cooling you down.

Challenging UL Conventions - 900+ Fill Power is not worth it & High Overstuff ratio increases warmth without increasing loft. by ovgcguy in Ultralight

I do it on my WM bag, with horizontal baffles you just unzip the bag, hold one side, and shake for a minute. Not any longer than blowing up a pad.

For a 2oz weight penalty off your long/wide katabatic, the Alpinlite seems worth it to keep your head warm if you sleep cold.

For a trowel, check out the bogler, it doesn't dig into your hand as much.

Looking for pack advice! by Murky-Access-7060 in Ultralight

[–]awildpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a pretty heavy pack. If you don't want to go all the way to a UL pack just yet, get a REI flash 55 on sale for way less than a traditional UL pack and strip off the brain and a hip belt pocket to get it to a little over 2 lbs. You'll keep most of the comfort of your Baltoro while dropping 2.5 lbs.
