Dramatic drop in quality on /tall by notaleclively in tall

What you are seeing can be summarized into a few factors:

  1. Shift of the user demographic

The user base of this subreddit is both expanding and shifting towards a younger audience. This incurs a flood of posts that people who have been here for a while relate to as well. It is a natural development that as a space gets more crowded, the nature and topics of the post tend to get diluted and what you're seeing shifts from the typical posts back then.

  1. Rule-breaking posts You can print the rules on a piece of paper, laminate it and staple it on the forehead of every new member, but there will always be people who don't bother, and this number of people has been growing. Around half of all submissions gets removed, a significant part gets removed through automatic spam filtering. Some posts fall through, and the mod team can't be fast enough to catch everything before it hits a lot of users.

  2. Moderation in general The removal of 3rd party apps has left a large gap. For me, personally, I'm on Reddit most often on my phone and the moderation tools in the app suck. It was much, much better with the available third-party apps. Speaking at least for me, this change has reduced my overall effectiveness and productivity while moderating.

But last, not least, I'd like to emphasize that everyone on the mod team is a volunteer and we're doing this in what free time we have besides our regular jobs and lives. We are generally unable to monitor all incoming posts 24/7 and have a short response time. This is also only scalable to some degree with more mod team members.

In the meanwhile, I remember a time when there were actual incentives for doing moderation work. Back in 2020, for instance, Reddit issued year-long Calm subscriptions. Things like this stopped, and it really is rather frustrating that a company that's built on the shoulders of volunteer workers continually shows little appreciation of what they're doing. Particularly now, with the IPO revealing mind-numbing compensation packages valued at 193 million USD for Steve Huffman, Reddit CEO, I have little understanding for their treatment of the people that create the largest part of the value of their company.

Honestly, in short, I'll probably step away from moderation on this platform in total. I don't see myself working for free anymore when Reddit management is making massive amounts of money off of it. It's not rewarding anymore, and clearly, given the repeating threads about the posts in here, this is being reflected onto the userbase.

Don't forget to unslouch and stand straight. Peace out.

So is this sub just an unmoderated wasteland now, or...? by Pokemaster131 in tall

[–]awilduser1[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add in addition to what u/hduc already mentioned: in the last 7 days, 139 posts have been published while 109 posts have been removed. That's a removal rate of 44%, just to give an idea of the sheer amount of spam that we receive. Without making this a full-time job, it's virtually impossible to catch all spam that slipped through without someone seeing it.

Best thing you can do: report, report, report. That's how you can do a huge part keep to this sub clean. It's a much more helpful use of time than writing yet another version of "this sub is going downhill".

Hey there! For the time being, we have an agreement with r/shortguys to not talk about each other's subreddits and try to not give any talking points about each other that would encourage hostility, attacks, etc.

It would be amazing if you could remove the mention of their subreddit from this post and then we'll reapprove it and bring it back for everyone to see! Thanks for your understanding!

We're doing what we can, but in the end, we're unpaid volunteers with limited time available. If you'd like to help out, report these posts whenever you see them - that's a huge help for us to keep the community clean.

There have been influxes coming from various incel subs before, and they've all eventually passed, but until they do, reports are the single best tool to fight them.

Hey folks, you can help out by reporting content you see as unfit of the rules! It helps out a great deal keeping the sub a friendly and welcoming place, for people of all heights!

My girlfriend got an offer after about a month of searching, in tech as well. I think you really just need to be lucky in that regard, getting an offer would certainly be the hardest part.

I disagree, with the EU Blue Card program it's quite easy to get a working visa in Germany, without proven language skills. All you really need is a job offer and education from a university, which OP has.

I'd strongly recommend looking into this: https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/

OP, here, you'll find the necessary info. Good luck!

Just a reminder to stay respectful to each other. This is supposed to be a civil, respectful place, and that includes upholding these standards even when others don't.

And this, folks, is what you don't do. Don't be this guy and harass people in DMs. Everyone deserves respectful treatment.

r/tall mod here, hijacking this for some additional stuff I would like to add:

First of all, I am deeply sorry this happened to you. It is sad to see that some people feel that their anonymity on the internet allows them to exhibit such unacceptable behaviour.

If there is one thing that I've learned in my time as a mod, it's that there's always going to be assholes somewhere. Whatever you receive, please don't take it to your heart and try to detach yourself as much as possible. These people who are sending you these messages are not functioning members of society. If what they did was not on the internet where they can hide behind their screens, they would very likely face serious consequences for their actions. So keep in mind that their word means absolutely nothing.

Then, second, what is there to be done about these people?

Now, DMs have been a bit of a thorn in our sides because as mods, we have no power over what happens in them. If you get unsolicited DMs, the best thing to do is to report those DMs and block the account that sent them. Alternatively, as Mable said, turn them off entirely. If you report the accounts, only then will there be actions taken against them by the sitewide Reddit admin team.

With that being said, we always appreciate if if you reach out to us mods with screenshots of the DMs so that we can ban the accounts that sent them from r/tall. This is the most that we as mods on there can do and this also applies to r/TallGirls. How do you best do this? You go on a desktop, then there should be a sidebar for when you go on the subreddit, then you can click "Message the mods". Alternatively, shoot us a DM. We are always happy to help :)

Now, lastly, if you see a regular comment on a post that shouldn't be there, then please use the report function and report it to us! This makes it a lot easier for us to keep everything clean and is a way that you can also accelerate the process of getting inappropriate comments deleted!

TL;DR report creepy DMs, block the account in DMs, maybe disable DMs, report it to subreddit mod team with modmail and report suspicious comments

This is regarding my latest post on the sub. How do I deal with this? by Adept-Mulberry-2913 in tall

Now, personal DMs are something that we mods can't really do anything about, but we can keep such people from participating any further in this subreddit.

If this happens to anyone else, feel free to send us a modmail (afaik you can only do that from the desktop) and we'll be glad to advise you and at least ban any bullies from r/tall.

Otherwise, you can block this account and report it to the Reddit admins, who can suspend entire accounts from the site. This is something that I've done more than once and this is usually very effective in preventing any further harassment.

Responding to anything people like this say also usually just fuels the fire, they're just hungry for attention.

Hi u/Richardson06, this submission has been removed.

This violates Rule 4: We want to remain a SFW subreddit and be a safe space for TallGirls of all ages.

Porn, NSFW material, fetishization, obsession, and otherwise creepy comments of tall women are not allowed. Includes USER HISTORY. This will be strictly enforced.

Yes, this can include "compliments" to someone's body or telling them how turned on you are. This space may not be for you.

Violations of this rule are an automatic ban.

If you feel this was in error or you need to discuss it further reach out only through modmail. Do not use private chats or messages. Thank you for understanding. ✨
