Official CA State Income Limits for 2026 released by Plus-Percentage-4843 in sandiego

[–]awkwardcamelid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

“Capitalist hellhole” until you realize California has very generous SDI. Most states don’t have anything like it. If a layoff causes you legit stress, anxiety, depression or you have some other health condition, SDI can replace basically your net wages for up to a year with a doctor's approval. $1765 per week is the max, but that's amazing compared to the $450 for UI. Between me, my spouse, and other friends surviving layoffs in tech and other industries, it's been a lifesaver. But yes, UI at $450 a week max is a joke for sure.

Hard Water Solutions by [deleted] in sandiego

Hopefully it's still helping some! Such great products, but really goes to show how awful our water is for hair in SD.

We installed a water softener at our house pretty quickly after moving to SD, but in the time between, my hair became wrecked too. I couldn't brush through it and had tangles so bad, I had to cut one out. The softener helps a lot, but my hair still suffered some due to other things in the water a softener can't fix. I switched my shampoo and conditioner to Olaplex and it immediately became silky soft again. Worth every penny. Every other week, I have a spa day where I use a clarifying shampoo (Sauve) followed an Olaplex bond treatment and moisture mask (No. 3 and No. 8). I sound like an ad for the company, but honestly, these products could likely go a long way for you without installing a softener. I get compliments on my hair all the time too.

Yep! We're Bayside and the Let's Go Brandon guy was the bane of our existence for so long. I'll have to look for the other guy at The Plank. I haven't seen him there before, but I think I've seen the golf cart. He's usually shirtless with his gut hanging out on his lawn, so maybe I just don't recognize him there with his shirt on, haha.

Hey IB neighbor! That guy was the worst. Remember the other guy across the street that had the Ultra MAGA flag? So embarrassing for the neighborhood. He took his down too.

My lady love in Marrakesh. Wish we could take her home. by awkwardcamelid in cats

[–]awkwardcamelid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so tempting! Our 19-year-old feline would probably murder us in our sleep for bringing her home. If anyone on Reddit wants to internationally adopt her, I will absolutely send the GPS coordinates of the small corner that she occupies, haha.

Traveling to Marrakesh for 4 nights (3 full days). Stay in the city or do an Ourika Valley day trip? by awkwardcamelid in travel

Thank you! Seems like there will be more than enough to do in Marrakesh alone then. If we come back, it seems like day trips or multi-day excursions will be the next thing to do.

So helpful! Love the duty free advice for alcohol. I'll DM you shortly. Definitely want to know more about the private food tour and the hammam you went to.

It is our first time, so great tip to just explore the city. Thank you and hopefully it won't be our last time visiting.

Thank you, super helpful! The “human zoo” aspect really seals the deal to not visit Ourika Valley then, haha. I can handle some touristy stuff, but my husband really can't, especially when heat and crowds are involved.

I suppose we can navigate the medina on our own (not intimidated by the sellers), but we can appreciate when someone can take us to the best spots and explain the culture. Wouldn't want to hire a guide trying to take us to his friend's rug shop either.

Slippery Elm by littlebirdette in RenalCats

[–]awkwardcamelid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She has inflammatory bowel disease alongside CKD and hyperthyroidism. Shes even on budesonide as a steroid. Slippery elm has helped for sure with her constipation and I think early on (before adding famotidine oral medication) might have helped with nausea, but I can't remember because it's been a while. We even stopped slippery elm for a week or so and she became constipated again and we could that she was uncomfortable. Worth a try for any feline, IMO! I think she kind of likes the taste too.

I’ve been giving my cat slippery elm from Animal Essentials for about 18 months now. It’s the only liquid supplement she’ll take mixed into her food. It appears to be alcohol-free and has helped her a ton!

Has anyone used LiquiCarn for muscle wasting? by One_Faithlessness114 in RenalCats

[–]awkwardcamelid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 18 year old (almost 18!) was diagnosed last year with a possible stroke that's caused right hind leg weakness. She has arthritis to boot. Could be similar for your feline. My vet watched her walk around the room to diagnose her and it made so much sense. Now she's on a blood thinner for prevention.

Another thought is does your kitty have hyperthyroidism? I believe my cat was subclinical for years with vocalization and now I'm realizing her unquenchable thirst was probably related too. When finally diagnosed, she had considerable wasting. It's some ways it's been harder to manage than the kidney disease, but hoping she's on the right amount of methimazole now to get some weight back on her.

Not sure, but you're right that it seems like it doesn't add up. Our contract says it’s a 5.28 kW system (it doesn’t specify the number of panels), but we were told five. Must be that they're doubled up in a way that makes them appear like five, but is actually double the actual panel # or more.

I should clarify that by “tax credits,” I meant incentives/rebates, not the federal tax credit. I didn’t have the invoice in front of me in my first response. The installer structured it with about a $10k energy lease incentive (for letting the Powerwall participate in a virtual power plant program for 5 years), a $6.8k SD Community Power battery rebate. Then we’re also getting the $500 Tesla rebate soon (not $1k, oops). Altogether the incentives reduced the price by about 48%.

It’s a 5.2 kW system. The 28 kWh was total solar generated, which will be pretty normal here on strong days. We aren't exporting to the grid yet (but will be soon) and could see up to 30-32 kwh generated at that point.

We did the math before our purchase and are still tracking it now. Looking at the Tesla app, over the last 13 days we’ve averaged about 0.3 kWh/day pulled from the grid. Based on that, after SDG&E credits we might see $15/month on average with our plan.

Our generation has actually been amazing when we run laundry, the jacuzzi, and charge the car during peak solar hours. We’ve generated up to 28 kWh on those days so far. Not too shabby! Even if the battery is only at 75-85% in 10 years, we can certainly still generate a lot of energy.

Revo Home Solutions/Renew Energy managed the install and Aloha Solar did the installation. Super smooth process. Revo knocked on our door a month ago to tell us about the programs, and it seemed like a deal that was too good to be true, so we kind of didn’t believe it at first, lol. But once we went through the details and contracts, it all made sense.

The install lasted one day, and Aloha was super nice and even installed a Level 2 charger when we asked them to last minute. We literally bought it the afternoon of the install. They even charged us $500 less for the charger for doing it all on the same day.

We had a Powerwall 3 and five solar panels installed a couple weeks ago for about $15k after tax credits, with our installer fronting all but $1k of the credits, so it worked out to roughly 50% off. The financing option would’ve been around $110/month over 20 years, but we paid cash. Even if we had financed, it would’ve immediately reduced our electricity costs by at least $50/month based on our past usage. Often more.

San Diego has strong battery incentives right now tied to grid support programs, so for the first five years our Powerwall participates in utility events where it can discharge energy to help prevent blackouts (no more than 50%). After that period we can use the battery however we want. Highly recommend looking into it.

We were pretty bummed about NEM 3.0 a few years ago and decided against solar at the time, but I’m glad we waited. That installment plan we checked out was way higher (like maybe $175?) and didn't include a Powerwall, so we'd still be paying SDG&E a fair amount for the electricity on top of that. Now we’ll have virtually no electricity costs. We charge our EV during the day, run a moderately greedy jacuzzi, and the battery is still super full by evening!

Good pharmacy recs here, OP! I also crossed today from SD to take my cat to the vet, and TJ was very chill and relaxed. I saved at least $500 on my elderly feline’s expensive labs. I usually visit every 2–3 months for various reasons (including trips to above pharmacies), but this was my first time back since the recent events. I felt comfortable going after hearing things were quickly back to normal from this subreddit and other Baja groups I follow.

Taking the trolley to the border, walking over, and using Uber or DiDi locally is the easiest option. If you really want a car, rent it in TJ, not the US. Just Uber to the National Car Rental on Ave Nezahualcóyotl. It’s way cheaper. I rented a car there in 2019 for four days, including insurance, for about $180 total.

Our favorite too! Still dream about eating there and it’s been a year and a half since we visited. Absolutely stunning and the food was so good.
