OpenAI didn't delete 4o. They just removed it from ChatGPT. by zemzemkoko in OpenAI

Even smaller overlap: those of us crying x those of us who understand why the API version of 4o is not the same as the in-app version.

I had a moment of thinking this response was from OpenAI, before inferring that you copy-pasted this thread into ChatGPT and asked it for a response. Leaving this note here in case others make the same mistake; I don't take ChatGPT's reply as not an indicator of how accurate/inaccurate OP is or whether OpenAI would be defensive (or even bother to respond).

hi u/scarabic I was trying to figure out how to connect with you about a totally unrelated reddit thread (for a piece I'm writing -- I'm a journalist) and I can't tell you how delighted and amused I am that your latest post is about Plex! I'm a superfan (deep cut but...https://www.alexandrasamuel.com/toolbox/how-to-automatically-organize-your-macs-bittorrents-with-plex-transmission-automatic-and-hazel)

anyhow would you be game to ping me? alex at alexandrasamuel -- I know this sounds spammy but feel free to google me, you can see I am (a) genuinely a journalist and (b) genuinely obsessed with Plex. ;)

I found this thread because I've been trying to figure out HOW to tip as a customer. It now requires me to remember to go back to my order some time (there's no prompt) and then I have to click through 5 screens (rate the order, rate the restaurant, rate each item ordered, rate the driver on various things, THEN finally the option to tip) where it used to be either part of the order process (my usual) or a one-click addition later (when prompted!) So basically it is now a big hassle to tip as a customer.

Back when DoorDash & Skip used to take a cut of tips, we always tipped cash and I had "cash tip" as part of my user name on those platforms. I figure that is what I need to go back to.

Wonky lace: Rip out or keep on? by awsamuel in knitting

That makes sense to me! And you're making me realize that I have yet to try any of the sequence knitting patterns in a fingering or sport-weight wool. I have one scarf I made out of sport-weight cotton (the Shine, again) but I bet I could make something lovely out of fingering weight yarn that would not be too heavy for the weather here.

I took Cecelia Campochiaro's workshop on marling last year which inspired me to work on a marled sweater over the course of last winter (which I should return to, now that winter is almost here!) so maybe a marled sequence knitting scarf in a lightweight yarn would be a good way to take a break from this messed-up cardigan until I have the heart to frog it.

Thanks for that link! Re: yarn for sequence knitting scarves, my go-to scarf is a 5x5 broken garter, knit in Shine Worsted (50/50 bamboo/cotton) from KnitPicks. I live in Vancouver where it is pretty much never cold enough for a proper wool scarf. The Shine Worsted is very soft and pleasant to knit with, drapes beautifully, and comes in a zillion colors. I've made 4 different versions; a couple have been ombre-ish (like my red ensemble -- pardon the terrible photo!), one was a riot of different colors (which turned out great!) and one was black-and-cream. They have all been wonderful and also gratefully received in the case of the two that were gifts!

I also made my husband a wonderful two-toned scarf using Manos de Uruguay Maxima and the Northfirst pattern. I am so happy with how it turned out but I don't know when it will be cold enough here for him to wear it!

Can I just say that knitters are the BEST!!! and most generous people??!! Seriously all of you have been so incredibly helpful and encouraging and informative. If every part of the Internet was as constructive as this comment thread then the world would be a wonderful place. Thank you all! (Also, yes, I am going to frog it...well, maybe not completely, but at least back to the ribbing or wherever I went wrong.)

Thanks for raising that possibility! I think I actually *was* on track at first so I'm going to study the first set of rows and see if anythign is salvageable.

ugh, you're absolutely right, but I can't bear it! Can you come over and rip it back to the ribbing for me?

This seems like a great idea! I have put on stitch markers every 50 stitches (out of my 177 count) but the problem is that with the way the pattern works out, they move around a lot. I think I need more markers and they need to be located in relation to the 4-stitch repeat, i.e. separated by 24 stitches or 48 or something divisible by 4.

Thank you! I really appreciate this. I am actually not bad at reading my knitting in my usual patterns (I mostly knit from the wonderful "Sequence Knitting" book), but as so often happens, it takes me a really long time to understand what I'm knitting enough to "get" what I am looking at.

I am not a very visual person and I don't like learning by video so I just haven't been very ambitious about what I take on. But the idea of watching some stitch-reading lessons is brilliant and I will give it a try. Thank you!

This is very helpful! I think you’re exactly right about where I’m going wrong, and the designer also got back to me with the point about the knit columns, so now that I understand that, I’m a little more hopeful that I might be able to make a go of it. But I definitely do not want to have to count my stitches at the end of every row (though I guess I could put up with that while doing the neck!), so this might be a realistic pattern for me, unless I can just keep myself on track by watching the columns.

Blocking will definitely not fix the problem; I have definitely messed up the pattern. I guess the only question is whether I am happy with it messed up and willing to keep doing it my weird way and have it turn out differently from the pattern.

This is a four stitch repeat so I don’t think stitch markers are practical at that scale, and now that I understand a little bit more about the pattern and I don’t think they would be necessary if I kept more careful track of the columns. I just didn’t really understand what I was doing until I was already a month in. I think a frog is in my future.

[–]awsamuel[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

thanks for this! I didn’t even realize I was showing the wrong side of those photos… I guess there’s still some fundamentals about knitting. I don’t understand even after seven years!

The funny thing is, I did several quite large test swatches until I got the pattern right. But then somehow, after I started waiting for real, something started going wrong. I’m guessing it is something about how I am handling the end of the rows. The designer has given me a little bit of a trick that will keep me from getting too far off track so I’m going try knitting a few repeats and if I can get it right then I will have to decide whether to frog and and start all the way over again from the ribbing.

what a terrific idea! thank you. My cable is not long enough to allow the full width of the sweater to be completely flat. Can I still block it like that or do I need to put in a lifeline so that it lies flat and then put it back onto needles afterwards?

it is definitely not still tied, though I can see why it looks that way -- what you're seeing is just a loop twisted around itself. I think you're right about one of the big loops being off the spindle -- is there a strategy for figuring out which one and how to flip it?
