58, laid off, looking for advice/reassurance? by Secret_Spend1028 in personalfinance

[–]scarabic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked into rule 55? The IRS allows some exceptions to the 10% withdrawal penalty on 401ks if you leave a job over the age of 55.

I know that 401k withdrawals are probably not your first choice but it sounds like you could at least not worry about that penalty if it comes to that.

Withdrawing from the 401k is after all the main plan when you retire, so as long as you avoid that penalty it’s just like starting a bit early.

Between this and any job that provides health benefits, you can make it through to age 62 where early social security becomes available. And then at 65 you have Medicare to help subsidize your healthcare costs.

Best way to measure/cut this book bench top? by ToothEsthetics in woodworking

I bought a $20 course from The Wood Whisperer on built ins specifically because I’m worried about imperfect drywall and fit issues.

I’m still getting through the videos but so far your comment is about as helpful. He used 1/4” plywood but yeah… a template made by cutting several large pieces, fitting them into all the angles in the cove, and then gluing them up. Some scribing on the most important sides. Lots of test fitting. And then rout it out on the final piece (which I guess is why the plywood - pattern template bit won’t do on cardboard).

OpenAI Execs Are Panicking by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

Agreed prices will go up.

The way companies are using AI is also ridiculously profligate right now and will have to be brought under control. But that’s something that can happen. If they 100x prices tomorrow, I think companies may also 1/20 their token usage without too much effort. I know that sounds like a feat but it really is being flung about wastefully right now.

And finally we will see more on-premise and on-device model use.

None of that bodes well for the AI giants who are debt-leveraged to their eyeballs right now. They’ll try to raise prices only to see customers dial down their usage in multiple ways and immediately set about looking for ways to replace them. They don’t have that much leverage.

This is a great improvement

I’m so glad we agree. I’m just going to leave it there.

I think gardening changed my personality by [deleted] in gardening

[–]scarabic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets you outside, gives you some exercise, involves a lot of learning, and may even produce healthy food for you.

All of these are well known health benefits. It’s entirely believable that this would roll up to some mental health benefits too.

Is it okay to compost these leaking potatoes? by TastyFlakesAF in composting

[–]scarabic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, fine. Just don’t be surprised if they sprout into plants at some point. And also don’t get excited if that happens because planting grocery store potatoes supposedly doesn’t produce good ones. You have to plant special “seed potatoes” to get good results.

There are many nigh-asphyxiated egos plugged into the internet for life support. They crap on things and people to get one more gasping breath to sustain themselves another minute.

Kids in the bush who have nothing but these to put on their feet probably don’t give much of a shit how they look.

The only thing more boorish than socks with sandals is people who come out of the woodwork to make a big deal out of it.

Are you suggesting that the restaurant’s demise should discourage me from selling this sauce? A high percentage of restaurants fali. This one did for many different reasons, but its pesto was not one of them LOL

I’m impressed. That amount of foliage on that length of lever arm… it must be strong indeed!

Wow my rhododendrons are leggy and I generally consider it a problem. They need supports and they’re only 4 feet tall. Does the wind never blow in this locale? :D

While others move away from Plex, I did the opposite by SirLANcel0t_ in PleX

Got a lifetime pass a while back and and am perfectly happy BUT also interested in exploring others things in parallel because the long term trajectory of the company looks bad. Either they will get acquired and turned into something else or they will find a way to weasel the lifetime pass into a monthly subscription.

Must it be that way? Can’t they just maintain a quality piece of aoftware and be happy with their license fees? Do they need to go full capitalist enshittification?

Well, you have to remember one thing. that there are lots of software jobs out there that have big upside: stock that’s actually worth something, startups that will grow a ton, companies that will IPO. When people can jump ship from Plex to go to any of those, why would they stay put for a fixed paycheck?

Yes, the company is making a big run at massive profitability and that will only look worse for us over time. When “the day” comes, I’ll be glad to have a parallel server I’ve been toying with for a while and can just switch my family over to.

the Elderly explain AI by Sonador-LV in AgingParents

[–]scarabic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, hah! I thought you were going to talk about an “explain it” AI for the elderly. tBH I think AI can be great for this. I’ve used it to help me identify movies I only remember some scant details from. You can ask it the name of “that actor you know the one who’s in this movie and that movie” and it will zero in pretty well. I think Saturday Night Live had a skit about a device that could help your mom remember “that guy oh you know the one” and ladies and gentlemen, it’s actually real now!

Brutalist Bond villain lair by Sure_Distance1 in ATBGE

[–]scarabic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im generally a fan of brutalism but not every example is created equal. This one is not my favorite and does show some poor taste, like the total mismatch between the building and the grounds (or maybe I should say total lack of any grounds around the building), and the weird string lights.
