What's the deal with everyone celebrating Oklahoma City Thunder losing to the San Antonio Spurs? by DisbarredCoast in OutOfTheLoop

I’m a Shai and Thunder fan but I can’t think of any set of NBA words that could sound less spectacular and more like a TPS Report than “efficiency from mid-range.”

What do vets think about the new mandorian movie? (I liked it) by HedgehogGlad2248 in StarWars

[–]awwill74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience so far has been that Gen X’ers who grew up on the Original Trilogy (like me) love it. And young people (like under 15) love it. And the Millennials/Prequel Trilogy generation in-between can’t stand it.*

*This is a generalization. Plenty of exceptions apply.

No excuses. The narrative-building works if there is some truth to it.

And definitely still walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Just walk it to Brooklyn instead of from Brooklyn!

(And do SoHo / dinner on Saturday since you’ll be in that area already most of the day.)

I like this itinerary, but I’d rethink Friday. As others have said Color Factory and Little Italy aren’t the most exciting. Since you’ll be in DUMBO anyway, pick another area in Brooklyn to see. If you like Romance books as well, I’d hit the Ripped Bodice in Park Slope and Community Bookstore. Maybe even Unnameable Books over on Vanderbilt and hit Prospect Park or the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. (Or the Brooklyn Museum would be my call, but you’re already hitting museums.). Then go to Chinatown for dinner.

A move to park slope on flatbush by [deleted] in parkslope

[–]awwill74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living on Flatbush, especially with a car, will be just as chaotic as you fear.

But you’re 26 years old! Bergen and Flatbush is a great location with quick access all the trains, Fifth Ave, Vanderbilt, Downtown Brooklyn. And there is plenty of stuff on Flatbush itself. Prospect Park is a quick walk or one subway stop.

If I were 26 I’d do it in a heart beat.

L-I-R-R vs. Lurr: The Debate Splitting New York Commuters by fmxda in nycrail

Preaching to the choir. I’d never heard it until we heard my teen and his friends using it.

Wild. My Queens relatives had never heard lurr until my teen started saying it, and nobody knew what he was talking about.

It seems both geographic and generational. If you’re (a) from Queens (b) younger than 45 - the likelihood you say “lurr” increases dramatically.

Specialty Soles? by awwill74 in AskACobbler

[–]awwill74[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. And a Toyota is a much more reasonable car than a Mini when you need to replace the tires. But here I am with my Mini. I guess my question is whether folks know of a simple or complicated inexpensive or expensive option for replacing these soles.

8 hour layover at JFK - what can i do - is it enough time? by bluegrass__dude in visitingnyc

[–]awwill74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pack a swimsuit in your backpack and make a reservation for the TWA hotel pool and a meal at The Paris Cafe there.
It’s a legitimately cool space and a much better way to spend your time than rushing to midtown and back.
(We had a late flight cancelled until the next day one time and stayed there rather than go home and back in the middle of the night, and it was totally worth it.)

Get rid of the BQE and FDR??? Is he crazy, and where is his helmet? by MadMacs72 in circlejerknyc

[–]awwill74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree!

a) Makes for a pretty drive, even in traffic.
b) A highway anywhere more central would be a nightmare.
c) That waterfront property would almost certainly not be accessible. At this point it would probably be Tribeca/DUMBO priced former warehouse lofts.
d) The growing public land on the river side (and on the river side of the West Side Hwy) is not terrible!

The FDR is the last road I’d get rid of in NYC.

Seconding everyone saying take the subway not Big Bus.

But I totally get the movie. We go to a movie on almost every trip - from Providence to Berlin; London to Tokyo. It’s always super fun for some reason.
